Per was great and will be missed.
With that said, I don't really care too much, members have come and gone in Opeth, and Åkerfeldt and Mendez are the only two that I would really miss. (No Opeth without Åkerfeldt is kinda obvious tho)

I do find it a bit odd that so many members have been coming and going, but there's nothing in particular about Per's style that I'll really miss very much. I do still miss Martin Lopez, though.

I'm a bit sad about Per leaving, more so because now I'm worried they're gonna replace him with some widdly-widdly JR-esque player.

Per's stuff worked so well with the rest of them.

Really? Has that ever been their sound?

I'd trust them to have better taste than that, especially with their current trend of abandoning conventions and making their music even more of something unique to them.

I'd trust them to have better taste than that, especially with their current trend of abandoning conventions and making their music even more of something unique to them.

I'm not that worried but honestly I didn't see a reason for Per to leave. He seemed to work fine with them so I don't really understand why they'd get rid of him unless they wanted to change the direction they went with keys. And an obvious alternative would be to go in the direction I fear (among many others, obviously)

But their change in direction on Watershed was largely made up of Per's great keywork, and the fact that his stuff is written on this album too means that it's not about material.

At the end of the day though, it is still about Akerfeldt, so this probably isn't a huge deal. If there truly isn't a relationship problem - which I am always skeptical about - then he probably left because of "creative differences" aka he wasn't giving much input.

Oh, wow. I did not see that change coming. He seemed like a perfect fit for the band. Strangely though, I am not upset, or sad, or happy or anything. After seeing Tarja booted out of Nightwish and Portnoy from DT, change is coming much more accepting for me....unless someone dies, then it will probably hit me like a thunderbolt.

Mendez gives a bit, if I remember correctly from the BWP documentary, and Mikael went to him with the metal stuff and the stuff that's actually going to be on the new album to see what he thought, so Mikael certainly values their input.

IDK, maybe it is due to the new material? I remember reading somewhere that its a completely different direction to anything they've done before, maybe it didnt sit well with him? Or the rest of the band didn't think it was sitting well with him?

Or, *drum roll* maybe he just got tired of being in a high profile band? Since he joined up (Deliverance/Damnation era), Opeth have become quite a bit more popular.

Or, maybe he just lost interest in the band. At the end of the day it doesn't matter so much, he was awesome, and I'm sure they can find an awesome replacement.

So, is he added to the new drummer poll yet?

I guess he may have left because of the continuous touring, as he was asked to leave after the recordings. BTW, I bet Opeth will announce the new guy before DT will!

Yeah I kinda agree with this. He was a solid keys player but never crucial to the band's sound and was practically mixed out at times during shows. On the RAH DVD he's barely audible most of the time.

I was thinking more in terms of stage presence and image. I would greatly miss seeing him aside Mikael; his silent demeanor has become almost synonymous with the band. Plus, it's obvious that he's got much more say in how things go down songwriting-wise than he used to. Combine all that with the fact that he's the second longest-standing member in the lineup, and yes - it would absolutely fucking blow if he left the band.
