Interesting point here as well: If Akerfeldt came out prior to Heritage and said, "This is a one-off thing" or if Heritage was the second part of a two album swing (like Deliverance and Damnation) then I wonder how fan reception would be different.

This is definitely an interesting point. I feel like half of their fanbase seems to be very dismissive of the new album, so if this is in fact just a one off thing they may actually give it a better chance.

I've been listening to it a lot and..

Opeth outdid themselves again. Boring. It's been going that way since Orchid. Screw the death vox, I'm not thinking about those when I'm listening to this album. It's amazing and at least as epic as Watershed. I'm definately hoping they'll be praised for the music itself instead of the 'different direction'. Everything sounds awesome, the band grooves as a tit, the songs are sometimes even catchy and there's lots of mood. I'm definately not wondering what they'll do next, because I already know it will be awesome as usual.

Take this album in, chill out. No trace of bad music here. The 70's production sounds incredible and takes you closer to the band than ever before. It definately hit me hard at Folklore, instant top 5 Opeth song for me. It's what the entire album works up to. The rest certainly isn't 'meandering', I disagree. The album flows like a train, and the subtle moments are all incredibly beautiful.

The Ghost Reveries 5.1 mix is so bad that i'm listening to the stereo instead.

I think the mixer swapped the right channel with centre, because EVERYTHING is centred around it for no good reason, it's like when you slide your stereo balance left or right.

Plus, they were never going to make another death metal album as good as Still Life or Blackwater Park. Never. So, why not try something totally different? Instead of "settling" for an 8/10 everytime, risk the 4/10 in hopes of making a 10/10.

See this is where I think my opinion differs: I would rather have 3-4 good, 8/10 albums then 3 horrible ones and 1 masterpiece :) But thats just me. And maybe my opinion will change as I get older because I will only be listening to these "masterpieces" as I've discovered too much music to keep listening to just "good" albums :p And your last point is very interesting I agree.

Yeah they did. It's called Ghost Reveries.

Been listening to a few tracks, Famine had promise but wow where does that awesome piano part go? To shit that's where. Really like some others though.

I need to listen to the album a few more times, but I applaud Opeth for showcasing their 70s influences like Yes, Camel, and Deep Purple without making a 70s cover album like most prog rock bands do nowadays.  The new album is good and that's all I can say right now.

Yup, same for me. Granted, it is very hard to actually find access to it and it will need several more rotations for me to do that, but I'm very excited about this and think it's a nice addition to their discography. Liking it so far, although I'm not blasted away by it. I'm sure this album has a lot of hidden qualities, though.

I guess he means they are boring because they outdid themselves yet again. Not that the actual album is boring.

musta meant "boring?"

after 3 spins im in that one camp. you know, the one where we like the sound and the idea behind the directional change but aren't blown away by the songs and find them meandering, etc.

i'll probly spin it twice more today and fall head over heals; we'll see.

Looks like I'm seeing Opeth with Katatonia in Dallas. I had scrapped those plans because the friend I'm going with had a conflict of interests, but that's been resolved now. So we're going. And it's only 6 days after I see Eisley. I am excite.

I have no idea what they will play, but Heritage in full wouldn't be a far fetched guess.
Don't think Opeth has played too many of their albums in full before, (at least not on the tours for each album), but Heritage really feels like a "gotta hear it in full"-kind of album, and even though it might not be a concept album, it still feels like one.

Apart from that though, I just got a hunch that they maybe would play songs without growl, like something from Damnation, songs like Isolation Years, Burden, Face of Melinda, Harvest or whatever, but playing nothing with growl at all might get the hardcore fanbase even more upset.  :lol

Well, I think BWP is one of their best for sure, it normally goes between that one and Deliverance. :P
As for album, I would rank BWP about 4 or 5.

They will never play it though, I mean... they did rehearse it for the special shows they did last year, but if they didn't play it at an event like that, I doubt they ever will.

Regardless, I am going to be shouting "BLACK ROSE IMMORTAL" in between any breaks in the set as I stand directly below Mikael's balls. I want him to yell at me.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Imagine at every concert on Opeth's tour, somebody is shouting for that song.
Eventually Mikael will snap and be all like "U WANT METUUL?!"

Mikael doesn't seem like the kind of guy who would yell at an audience member. I see it happening more like this:

"PLAY BLACK ROSE IMMORTAL!"

"Hey."

"Shut. The Fuck. Up."

I keep trying to get something similar organized for Devin Townsend shows that all DTFers attend. I want to get it to the point where Devy hears people requesting Punky Bruster (comedy punk album he did in the 90s) songs such as "Heinous Anus" during song breaks.

I believe I read somewhere that Mike once told some random chick in the crowd to "Shut the fuck up, you stupid bitch".
Can't remember which gig or what she had been screaming for 1 hour, but if this actually happened, that's pretty lol.  :lol
