Favourite prog instrumental?
« on: March 09, 2011, 05:51:56 PM »
I'm looking for some new instrumental music. And I'm also a bit curious..
What's your all time favourite prog (or rock/metal) instrumental song(s)?

While I'm at it, I might as well mention mine:
When the Water Breaks by Liquid Tension Experiment.

I like Liquid Dreams by LTE
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

Tetrafusion - Dark Matter

The rest of their debut album is instrumental like this. I definitely recommend it. :tup
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

Liquid Tension Experiment - Freedom of Speech (for me definately the most beautiful and epic LTE composition)
Porcupine Tree - Mother and Child Divided
Metallica - Orion, Call of Kthulu, To Live is to Die (Qualifies as progressive in my book!)

Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

my list is too long, and i'm too lazy. so i'll just go with my favorite instrumental album. but that's still tough to figure out. so i'll go with my favorite essentially-keyboard-free instrumental album:

The Esseness Project.  :metal  :hefdaddy

Tough one.
I can't say one, but these would certainly be good picks:

Porcupine Tree: Burning Sky, Mother and Child Divided and Signify.

But then I have loads of instrumentals I love that aren't exactly 'prog', so that kinda rules out a lot. :/

I cam narrow it to Top 5:

DT - "Instrumedley (Live)"
Herbie Hancock - "Chameleon"
In Flames - "Pallar Anders Visa"
Miles Davis - "So What?"
Van Halen - "Eruption"

Edit: Miles and Hancock are obviously too jazzy, so I stuck with just DT's Instrumedley. In Flames and Halen are just solely rock and metal. Not really prog. So yeah.

I second Orion by Metallica. So epic.

I don't think Chameleon is prog, the Miles tune So What isn't prog either imo.

A few of my favorites that haven't been mentioned yet:

Losfer Words (Big 'Orra) - Iron Maiden
YtseJam - Dream Theater
Los Endos - Genesis
Dialogue With the Stars - In Flames

and ELP's got too many but most of these are based on classical pieces anyway.
