I don't mind growls, I'm just not a fan of the sound of their growls. They sound a little weird to me.

True. Have you heard the Disturbed cover of U2's "I Still Haven't found what I'm looking for"?

I'm probably going to be slain for this, but I love that live cover The Darkness did of Radiohead's 'Street Spirit'.
Unfortunately, I can't find the awesome version from that bootleg DVD I have, but this one is alright: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b_cpK0qm6TE

The Pet Shop Boys version of "Always On My Mind" is one of my favourite tracks ever. For my 18th birthday, my mom gave me a copy of the band's Discography compilation. I've been a fan of that song ever since.

Big fan of this cover of Yellow Submarine by Romanian artist Bogáti-Bokor Ákos. Very different from and much preferred to the original.

About 15 years ago, I remember seeking out covers of songs I like and came across Mindless Self Indulgence's cover of "Tom Sawyer."

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SvDfVex32vo

There is ZERO reason why I would like this song, but it's actually kinda cool.  Also, MSI's bassist is hot.

The Cure's version of Purple Haze:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cLGlDQRYJ9M
Just love the hypnotic vibe of it. What's funny is that it not only sounds nothing like the original, but it doesn't really sound like typical Cure, either.

LTE's version of Rhapsody in Blue
Jimi Hendrix's version of All Along the Watchtower
Iron Maiden's version of That Girl
Jolly's version of You Belong With Me
Blue Man Group's version of One of These Days (altho I guess it's not that different from the original)
half of Zeppelin's first few of albums!   :lol
As a basic rule, if you hate it, you must solely blame Portnoy. If it's good, then you must downplay MP's contribution to the band as not being important anyway, or claim he's just lying. It's the DTF way.

I’ve always loved this cover of Eleanor Rigby by Realm.

Realm were an 80’s thrash band who were described as sounding like Rush on speed.

Can't believe I didn't think of these two earlier (or that no one else has posted them):

Judas Priest's covers of The Green Manalishi (with the Two-Pronged Crown) and Diamonds and Rust are excellent and very different from the originals.  I've only heard the originals a couple times.  The Fleetwood Mac original of Green Manalishi kinda sucks.  The Joan Baez version is about what you'd expect from a Joan Baez song, and I'm not a fan of her vibrato-heavy soprano voice.  The song also has about twice the lyrical content of the JP cover, which is not surprising since it's about her relationship with Bob Dylan.  The JP versions of both songs -- and particularly those on Unleashed in the East -- have so much more life than the originals.  And I read this morning that Joan Baez had good things to say about the JP cover.

Cheating The Polygraph by Gavin Harrison, him doing big band versions of Porcupine Tree material. Very much different from the original versions (not strictly covers though since he is part of the band, anyway) and dare I say, very refreshing. Here's a taste: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s9PCreC7Lfk The entire album is great.

This reminded me of Peter Gabriel’s excellent cover of Listening Wind.

While I’m thinking of Scratch My Back, The Book of Love is way different than the original and way better too.
