Skydivingninja's Song Roulette v. Another one?
« on: February 28, 2011, 06:03:02 AM »
SUP GUYS!  My roulette has officially begun!  Here are the participants:

Sigz
Lateralus88
Acidrainlte
Gorille
Antigoon
dtismajesty
TheVoxyn
ZBomber

Rounds will be themed, genres aren't off-limits.  The rounds, however, will be a bit odd, as you're about to discover.  Here's my last FM.
https://www.last.fm/user/Skydivingninja

All right, ROUND 1: Send me something sinister and evil.  However, I would prefer if the song wasn't necessarily metal.  The kind of atmosphere from songs like Disruptr, Wake Up, and Hellfire from being "evil but not metal" is hard to top.

Looking forward to this.  I'm interested in seeing the picks for the first round. Evil but not metal is a great idea sky.

Lol. Wut exactly is evil music anyway?

The only thing remotely evil that I have ever come across is norwegian black metal. And that is evil for real... lol

That better not be the Wake Up I'm thinking of.

This is going to take some careful picking. I can't think of anything that doesn't ultimately end up being MEHTUL.

I hope you're not thinking of the Coheed "Wake Up" then.

@Voxyn: You can send metal if you want.  Don't feel pressured to match the ridiculous criteria that I said I prefer for the round.  :)

EDIT: so far I've had two songs that were just the sort of thing I envisioned, one that was cool but all right, and one that just creeped me the fuck out.  This is going to be a great roulette

Lol, I should proofread myself more.  I mean, the song was a cool idea, but just ended up being only all right in practice.

And wow you guys have sent in your songs fast.  Just waiting on Voxyn and Gorille now!

Ah, I think I got something. It's totally different from what I was about to send (post-rock instead of some industrial electronical thingie) but I hope I get bonus points for using an unexpected genre.

Anyways, I've heard all of the submissions, just need to let them sit a bit.  I'll to them all again later today, but for now I need to study.  Should have writeups and results by tomorrow!

I think you'll like my pick.  :lol Although to be honest I don't think I will get a very good score in this round. It was kind of an out-there choice but it was the first thing that came to my mind that wasn't metal.

You mean these results?

5 Points-Antigoon
Mumford & Sons-Dust Bowl Dance
Man, this song was just the kind of thing I was thinking of.  I've heard a bunch about these guys and a few songs here and there, but this convinced me that I need to pick up their album.  The singer's voice is a lot more versatile than I thought it was going to be, at least in terms of mood (I don't expect him to be doing death growls anytime soon).  The moment where the song "turns" is incredible.  They need to start making more cool stuff like this so people like me don't just almost immediately throw in the "sounds fine, but nothing really special" camp after hearing a few folk songs.  Well done.

4 Points-Sigz
Aphex Twin-Come to Daddy
Holy.  Fuck.  After I listened to this song and watched the video I stayed under my bed for the rest of the day.  Jesus Christ was that creepy.  If it wasn't for the hooks of Antigoon's song it probably would have won.  This song is more evil than every black metal band wishes they could be.  Amazing that something so simple, and one repeated phrase (that's kind of cliche evil, honestly) could inspire actual terror.  I've heard a lot about Aphex Twin as well and will add it to my list of things to check out.

4 Points-Zbomber
Dave Matthews Band-Halloween
If I could give you a special award for this round, it would be the "Smasher of Preconceived Notions About Dave Matthews."  I've heard a LOT of DMB in my day, and what I've always noticed is that the songs are good, the musicianship is top notch, and live recordings > studio, but after fifteen minutes everything kind of blends together.  Not this one.  Not "Halloween."  What really struck me as cool about this song was that it really felt like Dave Matthews mutated into something horrible.  Same instrumentation, same voice (barely), same kind of song structure, but...minor.  It was really cool.  However, Dave's vocals kind of got on my nerves a bit, like he was trying a bit TOO hard.  Is the rest of the album just as varied in sound and mood?

3 Points-TheVoxyn
God Is An Astronaut-Echoes
I actually have a GIAA album: The End of the Beginning, but I haven't listened to it much after a bit of a falling-out with post-rock.  This song made me remember why I checked them out in the first place.  This song crushes anything thats on TEOTB though.  The industrial side of their music is perfectly balanced with the post-rock side, and together is incredibly unique.  My jaw was actually open at one point.

3 Points-Gorille85
Ulver-Dressed in Black
Once again, another band I've heard so much about recently, mostly because of you and Zantera.  I honestly wasn't sure what to expect.  I heard that they were electronic, but used to be black metal.  To be honest, I don't hear much of why you and other Ulver fans consider the singer to be so great, maybe I need to listen to more of their stuff.  However, the mood and atmosphere of this song was top notch.  It was very cool, but I feel like here in South Carolina the winter weather that would be conducive to this music has just ended.  :-\

3 Points-Acidrainlte
Tomahawk-Flashback
Very simple hard/heavy music, simple kind of great creepyish vocals, but the groove was great.  Sounded like the soundtrack to an insane asylum.  Especially the last part of the chorus, which sounded like the singer of The Mars Volta finally overdosed on acid.  Only issue is that it kinda stays in the same place, and with another minute of cool stuff it could've been a fantastic song instead of just good.

2 Points-Lateralus88
Suicide Commando-Hellraiser
Evil dance music?  "HELL YES" was my initial thought.  However, it was all kind of forgettable for me, while Sigz's Aphex Twin song, another evil electronic number, had enough creepy parts (without the aid of the video, btw) that stayed in my head for the next few hours and earlier today.  Definitely fit the theme though.

1 Point-dtismajesty
Miasma and the Carousel of Headless Horses-Peacock the Heretic
First of all, these guys need to shorten their band name.  Its worse than Trail of the Dead.  As for the song itself, it was a nice instrumental, but that's it, unfortunately.  Nothing really stood out like in Voxyn's GIAA song.  Sorry, kid.

Current Standings:
Antigoon 5
Sigz 4
Zbomber 4
TheVoxyn 3
Gorille85 3
Acidrainlte 3
Lateralus88 88/44=2
dtismajesty 1

Next round: Probably THE deciding factor in getting into Dream Theater was James' voice.  After that, I started checking out more and more modern bands and got out of my classic rock snob phase.  This led me to discover most of my favorite bands today.  So your mission, whether you choose to accept it (and you must accept it, but if you choose not to, that's cool, we can reschedule for some other time.  I'm easy like Sunday mornin'.) is to send me a song with an amazing vocal performance.  Doesn't have to mean operatic voice though, sometimes the way a vocalist sings a simple ballad is just as impressive as James LaBrie's F#.

Maybe it wasn't the best starting point for Ulver but I thought it evil-sounding so that's why I picked it. You should really check them out! :tup

Hmm.. what to pick next
