The Post-Metal Thread
« on: February 24, 2011, 06:47:43 PM »
This is a thread about post-metal, like Russian Circles and Isis.  Don't have much of this genre, but I really like what I hear.  So talk about it!

I'll start.  Russian Circles is awesome.  Kind of the definition of post-metal: heavy, and their songs build up to climaxes.  What's so great is that unlike, say, Explosions in the Sky, their songs and albums actually sound different.  Station is my favorite.

Russian Circles is indeed awesome.  Pelican is pretty cool, too.

Intronaut is an awesome band.  I guess they are called post-metal, I don't really care.  I've never gotten into Isis...

Giant Squid is fantastic!

Try their song Sevengill. It has Anneke van Giersbergen as a guest vocalist, so you know it's good.
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

Is Giant Squid considered Post-Metal?  Not that it really matters, because their music is awesome, I just didn't think of it as post metal when I was making the thread.

I'm not really sure. I hear them called Post-metal a lot, so I figured I'd post it.

Cool thread.

I'm totally into Les Discrets lately. And Alcest. Do those two records count?

Er, I guess so sort of.  Who cares anyway, because they are both absolutely awesome no matter what.

ANd I've inspired myself to listen to the whole album. :metal

Edit: Come to think of it, Sevengill isn't a very good example of the "post" side of the band. Their other album Metridium Fields is a much better example. Doesn't matter, it's an amazing song.

Stupid name for the genre, but I guess that could apply to any genre title.

Anyway, if Agalloch and Isis fall under post-metal, then count me in.

What is post-metal?

Kinda like a combination of post-rock and heavy metal.  Longer songs, pretty simple instrumentation, distortion, lots of climaxes in the songs (that thankfully sound nothing like most post-rock bands), sparse vocals, usually growled/shouted.  Check out Russian Circles.  All instrumental, all awesomeness.

Add "Campaign" and "Carpe" to that list. They're great.

Why aren't people talking about Neurosis who are quite clearly the best post-metal band ever?

Also possibly the best live band I've ever seen

Pelican's okay and Intronaut's a good combination of post and prog metal. Their latest album is so good.

Neurosis is awesome.  I thought they were more sludge than post-metal, but fuck yeah Neurosis!

I'd say more post-metal frankly because post-metal wouldn't exist without them
