So, basically, I have started this new thing with falling asleep to music, last night, I played some Bob Dylan and it was awesome. Tonight, I decided to play some Agalloch. Awesome fucking idea. Perfect music to fall asleep to...until the vocals kick in. Now, I have no problem listening to the vocals and infact, they suit the music just fine, but they don't suit my need for sleep. The first 5 minutes or so of Limbs is so perfect for sleeping it isn't even funny. So basically, I am asking for more of this folk/dark ambient/metal that is all instrumental. I know I can take all of Agalloch's instrumentals and that would last a good 40 minutes but I want more than that. So, any good ideas?

I'm going to go to bed now. Falling Snow is playing and I'm tired. Peace out guys.

edit: or more music that sounds like the middle part of Falling Snow with the droney clean singing...I can sleep to that too.

Well since you're trying to sleep, Devin Townsend - The Hummer. Listen with good headphones and enjoy! It's one of my favorite albums ever (srsly)

What you are looking for, is Nest.

Check out The White by Agalloch. It's all folky type stuff, mainly instrumental, no metal, no growls.

Vāli is in a similar vain as well.

Find Stone in Focus by Aphex twin, set to repeat, and sweet dreams. I used to do that for months on end, it was just so soothingly beautiful and ambient.

An excellent place to begin.
I am a master of this question, my list will be obscure and extensive. But for more popular stuff that is accessible.

 - Planet X
 - Derek Sherinian solo stuff
 - Bozzio Levins Stevens
 - Joe Satriani
 - Ozric Tentacles
 - Maxxess/Axxess
 - Magic Elf
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

Happy Lives to you all.

Bucket's Death Cube K album Dreamatorium might fit the op better. Pleasant nightmares!

Another great ambient album is Carbon based Lifeforms' World of Sleepers. Betula Pendula is the track for falling asleep.

I saw Planet X and LTE.
The hell?

Music to sleep to:

Robert Rich, Steve Roach, Ananta, Brian Eno a.o. for ambient minimal stuff.

For more instrumental music with actual instruments, try listening to some modern classical, or classical/pop crossovers:
Les Fragments de la Nuit, Arvo Part, Steve Reich, Gerard Grisey, Johann Johannsson

Oh and a special recommendation for 'Jonsi & Alex', wich is basically Sigur Ros minus... well minus everything, just the atmosphere.

Nihil-Morari is generally considered the resident Zappa person.

Rob Dougan - Furious Angels

Mix of electric and orchestral music, it's pretty mellow (and fucking awesome). He has a couple of tracks in the Matrix movies: Clubbed to Death in the first one and Furious Angels and Chateau in Reloaded. The special edition has a second CD with instrumental versions of all tracks.

:neverusethis:
I actually used Sunn O))) to fall asleep to for the best part of 3 years, until I discovered other, mellower music. Now if I need help sleeping I'll often listen to the Sounds of the Earth series, long samples of rainfall, streams, rainforests etc. And although I'm not a massive fan of the band, Godspeed You! Black Emperor make some fantastic music to 'drift off' to.

I love the fact that you guys care enough to give me a shit load of things to listen to, but based off of the snippets of what you guys are saying about these bands, you guys are way off the mark. I want to ambient AND the metal. That is why agalloch's music is so cool. Ambient sounds make people want to fall asleep and metal makes me want to fall asleep so combining them would practically put me into a coma. The only problem with Agalloch is that amidst my peace, out of the blue, I hear BLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEH!!! Seriously guys, look up the song entitles Limbs, and give me a list.

Isis has sound somewhat similar to Agalloch, though they also use the growl.

I was going to also recommend Lyckantropen Themes by Ulver, and also some of the Smashing Pumpkins softer stuff, but you want some metal in the mix  :P
