Well, shoot.  Guess I've been wrong all these years.

Always disappointing.  In fairness, gating snares does happen.

My question - How could you listen to the I&W snare and think that was a real snare sound?

Not knowing shit about fuck when it comes to drums?

I loved the drum sounds on I&W, Awake and ACOS.  I think they all match the tone and overall feel of the albums.
Then Kevin Shirley happened, man what a mistake.  Ringy snare drums and flappy sounding kicks, ewww.

Has anyone else noticed the shoddy sound on BC&SL? If not, listen to Wither and concentrate on the snare. What the hell is that? Bad gating? leakage? phase issue?
I can't work it out myself but it bugs the fuck out of me and certainly detracts from a nice litttle song. :(

What's so bad about it? It sounds quite juicy

There's nothing wrong with the general tone, it's just some hits in the song sound a bit boxy and inconsistant.  The only thing i can think of is that a gate on one of the toms was opening with some of the harder hits. The fill just before 'I drown in hesitation...' in particular.

I just re listened to check i'm not going crazy. I think I might be as i couldn't hear what i'm talking about. Crap.
I must have just got used to it as it's definatly an issue, i didn't imagine it. I hope.

Hmm, I'm not sure about that. I recall loving the drum sound when I first heard BC&SL.

I don't hear any of the things you mentioned missedthepoint. Doesn't sound boxy or inconsistent.

That's the thing, neither did I when i relistened to check.
Oh well, that'll teach me to post without checking in future.

6DOIT, particularly I like how it sounds in Blind Faith.

The snare SOUND on I&W is pretty good I'd say, however, it's banging on velocity 127 all the way.
Makes it sound like the snare is everywhere, especially with drum fills.

I like the roomy compressed reverb of Awake, the organicness of FII, and the variety on 6DoIT.

I like the snare sound on the ToT-BCSL albums. Least favorite is ACoS--sounds too thin to me. Not a fan of the ACoS production in general, actually--that and 6DoIT really stand out to me as overall lo-fi sounding recordings compared to everything else in the LaBrie era.
Yeah, I have no idea what the cakeless person in that analogy is meant to be eating. If he's got some sort of cake substitute, it should really have been worked into the narrative at some point. As it stands, the options are:

  • Hoard a cake just to stare blankly into its doughy edifice.
  • Make futile chewing motions with your mouth while starving to death.

Awake. I hate I&W's drum triggers. As far as entire kit goes, the SFAM kit has one of my favorite drum sounds ever.
