MYRATH thread
« on: February 14, 2011, 10:13:14 PM »
I just discovered this band from Tunisia and got their second album Desert Call which I've been listening to almost non stop for the last couple days. I found another thread about them from a couple years ago that went nowhere, but that was before Desert Call came out. It took a few thorough listens to really appreciate how good these guys are. I have to admit, I've been actually looking for quality prog with a middle east influence and finally found it. Of course the DT influence is very much alive as it is with other melodic prog metal bands such as Circus Maximus, Vanden Plas, Redemption, etc., but the addition of middle eastern percussion, vocal melodies, and instuments is what makes this band stand apart. I haven't yet delved much into the lyrics...still just digesting the vibe of it. Anyone else into this album? What do you think of it? Good or bad. At any rate, they are trying to become known internationally and I think they deserve their own thread.

Thanks for the bump BanksD. Just listened to Merciless Times. Sounds great. Has all the elements I like about this band. Looks like it will be released in the U.S. in 5 days.  :metal

First album was awesome, second one, I really don't listen to it much, the new one, I like, but I preferred their original vocalist.

Got to give you a huge thank you for recommending this band. Checked them out on YT and have ordered the CD. Loved it. I've always been a sucker for the Middle-Eastern influence in music (Gates Of Babylon is a top 10 song) and cross that with DT style prog-metal and I'm all in.

Maybe DT heard this band and incorporated the sound into Outcry.

I absolutely LOVE this band. It's probably my obsession with folk/oriental prog metal (GREAT stuff, listen to Orphaned Land). Listening to Tales of the Sands right now, it's amazing.
I only listen to electro-post dubprog.  You've probably never heard of it.

Check out Amaseffer, listen to Slaves for Life. They're more in the Folk/progressive metal vein as apposed to Orphaned Land which has death metal influences, but still awesome.

Thanks for the heads up on Amaseffer. Really enjoyed it. I've always been a sucker for that middle eastern sound. Ritchie Blackmore's fault.
Can't get into Orphaned Land though. Not just the death vocals either.

I like it musically- just don't like either of the voices- clean or growl. Vocal melodies don't appeal to me either. Shame as I really like the music.

Bump, because, quite frankly, this band deserves this. I have just started listening to them after reading Elite's Top 50, and they have blown my mind. Both Tales of the Sand and Desert Call are  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

Can't argue with that. DTF introduced me to them and I fell in love with it straight away. I've always had a thing for that Eastern sound. Blame Blackmore!  :hefdaddy

Fuck yes. I love the eastern vibe of the Stargazer solo, for instance.

Funny, I rank them:
Desert Call > Hope >>>> Tales of the Sands.

Didn't expect the people here to love Tales of the Sands so much. I feel like the started to focus too much on Arabian-sounding gimmicks instead of good (progressive) songwriting.

It's the Arabian-sounding stuff I like. Good prog metal bands are two-a-penny and very boring these days.

ditto that.  It's really cool to hear how they incorporate it into the music.

I just listened to Tales from the Sands.

On one level it seems like standard prog metal, but the arabian melodies give it some real flair and uniqueness.
