It would be a little ridiculous to have like 6 death metal vocalists on one track.

Disagree.

I'm happy to report that this is the first Addicted Friday I participated in, although I'm still ignorant of the day's origins.

Listening to Addicted! is just a great way to start your weekend.

Thus, Addicted! Friday.

I didn't think Paul Masvidal did death vocals anymore, just high vocoder stuff?  It'll still be cool to hear!

Alright. A few more questions from the Devin Townsend n00b:

1. Are his ambient albums worth checking out, especially for someone like me who doesn't particularly care for the genre?

2. Why is Physicist so hated? I assumed since it had the same recording lineup of SYL, it would be considered a good album.

3. All I have is Addicted, and I've reached the point where I've decided I want moar. Sooo.....Terria or Ziltoid?

4. What if Deconstruction doesn't turn out to be the greatest thing to ever happen to humanity, and you guys were cumming your pants for nothing? In other words, it just seems like you guys are raising the bar so high that there's no way the album could meet your standards.

1.  Don't know, but I think they're more noise than anything, aren't they?  Haven't heard them myself.
2. Physicist is so hated because its just not a great album.  "Kingdom" is amazing, but its probably the only subpar/mediocre/bad album he has.
3. Both.  I prefer Terria though.  Don't forget to check out Accelerated Evolution and Ocean Machine in these early stages.
4. I don't know if I'm looking forward more to Ghost or Deconstruction, but they'll both be amazing and that hypothetical situation will never happen.

1. I think they're awesome, but if ambient isn't your cup of tea, I can't blame you for not liking them.

2. The production is pretty bad, and the songwriting isn't really up to the standards Devin set with his first two albums. I still think it's a great album, but still the worst he's done so far.

3. Ocean Machine

4. We were all getting fan-boners just from the Addicted teaser, and that album exceeded our expectations, so No.

1.  No.  Not unless your hardcore Devy or into that kind of noise thing, and I don't think you're either of those.

2.  It's not really "hated" per say.  It's just a bit weaker compared to some of his better efforts.

3.  Terria.

4.  I've no expectations for it, I'm just excited because all the information we have about it (and Ghost) so far seems to constitute a great album.

1. Haven't checked it out.
2. I actually have not listened to Physicist other than Kingdom. I have been reluctant to try.
3. Ziltoid, then Terria. I like Terria more but you need some omniscient, man!
4. Maturbation, cheeseburgers, mid paced heavy riffage, Joe Duplantier, Mikael Akerfeldt...fuck no.

2.  I've only heard Kingdom.
3.  Ziltoid!
4.  Every little snippet I've heard from it sounds amazing so I'm pretty sure it will be amazing.  :)

1. The Hummer is pleasant and atmospheric but a bit dull. Devlab is horrible and irritating.
2. Physicist just isn't very good; the production is weak and the songs simply aren't very interesting.
3. I much prefer Terria, but Ziltiod is a lot of fun.
4. Won't happen.

Slightly annoyed Dev hasn't switched to a bigger venue for his upcoming London show. It sold out before I and many others could get tickets and he's upgraded to larger venues on other dates on the tour but seems unwilling to do so for the London one which makes me a bit  :-[

Not so much a schedule, has what I am digging listening to at the moment. I discovered Gojira in a mixture of fiery rampages and hell fire. (not really, that was just the music I was looking for and digging at the time.) Now, I am listening to much chiller things. 60's psych and 70's and 80's classic and heartland rock. So, just listening to The Link when what I really want is Steve Miller, Tom Petty, and Alice Cooper, would not be all that effective.

1. Hummer is good meditation music. Haven't heard devlab entirely.
2. Not hated, just not as good as his other albums. Still some great tracks.
3. Both!
4. I'm trying not to overhype it, but how can't you when all the news coming out is so positive.

probably kinda weird of me to make my first post on a Dream Theater board in a Devin Townsend thread, but reading this thread adds a bit more anticipation for Decon/Ghost/Ghost 2 every time! having listened to the Dev since somewhere between when Terria and Accelerated Evolution came out, i can't wait to hear these records; the previews for both sound utterly incredible (as one expects from the guy).

re: Physicist, it's definitely grown on me since i first heard it, but it has so many hiccups where Dev usually doesn't falter (the aforementioned production/mix being the big one, but also the songwriting in general). there are two major things to consider, i think: the fact that the album grew out of writing sessions Dev had with Jason Newsted (if you've never heard the demo of their band, IR8, from around the same period, it's worth looking into... basically just chunky, palm-mutey metal with Newsted being a badass vocalist), and that it was Dev's followup to Infinity, which put the guy in the mental ward for a little while. it stands to reason he would've still been decently shaken up by the time 2000 rolled around; it's not like treatment for bipolar disorder/messiah complexes is all hunky dorey a couple of years after it goes down, you know?

speaking of Infinity, it's exciting but also puzzling how that record seems to be fitting into this 4-album Devin Townsend Project concept. they've been playing "Truth/OM" religiously on the tour, Dev re-recorded the short version of "OM" for Addicted (but didn't end up putting it on the record, obviously), and now the latest Deconstruction preview videos show that he worked the "Infinite Waltz" from "Processional" into the end of "The Mighty Masturbator." i feel like i should ask him about it on twatter, but the guy leaves for Sweden soon...
