probably kinda weird of me to make my first post on a Dream Theater board in a Devin Townsend thread, but reading this thread adds a bit more anticipation for Decon/Ghost/Ghost 2 every time! having listened to the Dev since somewhere between when Terria and Accelerated Evolution came out, i can't wait to hear these records; the previews for both sound utterly incredible (as one expects from the guy).
re: Physicist, it's definitely grown on me since i first heard it, but it has so many hiccups where Dev usually doesn't falter (the aforementioned production/mix being the big one, but also the songwriting in general). there are two major things to consider, i think: the fact that the album grew out of writing sessions Dev had with Jason Newsted (if you've never heard the demo of their band, IR8, from around the same period, it's worth looking into... basically just chunky, palm-mutey metal with Newsted being a badass vocalist), and that it was Dev's followup to Infinity, which put the guy in the mental ward for a little while. it stands to reason he would've still been decently shaken up by the time 2000 rolled around; it's not like treatment for bipolar disorder/messiah complexes is all hunky dorey a couple of years after it goes down, you know?
speaking of Infinity, it's exciting but also puzzling how that record seems to be fitting into this 4-album Devin Townsend Project concept. they've been playing "Truth/OM" religiously on the tour, Dev re-recorded the short version of "OM" for Addicted (but didn't end up putting it on the record, obviously), and now the latest Deconstruction preview videos show that he worked the "Infinite Waltz" from "Processional" into the end of "The Mighty Masturbator." i feel like i should ask him about it on twatter, but the guy leaves for Sweden soon...
