Surrounded/Sugar Mice/Mother appreciation
« on: February 10, 2011, 11:35:39 PM »
Hearing this live on the fanclub I+W anniversary rekindled my love for DT.  I honestly have no words.  Surrounded could now be my favorite song.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

A good song, doesn't let down I&W (my fave DT album), and helps give the album its overall solidness.

Surrounded is and always will be my favourite Dream Theater song.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

I don't really get why people like Surrounded so much. I mean, it's a good song but not that good.

Surrounded is and always will be my favourite Dream Theater song.

Top 3 for me, I've always loved it.

Not much a fan of their Sugar Mice/Mother version though, the song is awesome as it is.
Zydar is my new hero.  I just laughed so hard I nearly shat.

Surrounded was the first Dream Theater song I ever loved, and it was the moment they first clicked with me. May 2006, on a bleacher in the rain of New Hampshire.

I really like Surrounded. When I saw it in Linz, they played the S/SM/M medley, though. Not knowing both of the other songs back then, I was a bit confused. I'd love to hear it again, but I don't think that it'll happen.
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

Love Surrounded and liked what they did with the annniversary live version. I feel it works well. I wasn't aware that there was another track in there (Mother) as I don't know the original, phillistine that I am. I will now put that right. Off to spotify I go.

Edit. Ah, Pink floyd, the Wall I'm assuming. Not on Spotify and not an album I'm that familiar with. Great solo in the song though, and strangely fits very well with the solo in Sugar Mice...

Meh.  I prefer Surrounded without the extra song parts, although I loved what they did with the intro.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

The first DT song I really connected with, still is my favourite DT song, and one of my favourite songs period. It has so much of what I love about music in it.

Surrounded really reminds me of The Camera Eye by Rush...not the whole song but there's one section of it where the rhythm of it reminds me of it

:tup I agree. The version of Surrounded on the I&W Fanclub cd is bliss. It's fucking amazing.

James' vocal performance on that CD is miles better than the performances found in Chaos in Motion.

Hell, most performances I've heard from James are miles better than the ones in Chaos in Motion.  :lol

When I&W first came out, I liked Surrounded and Another Day more than anything else on the album (except PMU). I didn't care of TTT or Metropolis or LtL as much. Then time passed, Awake came out, I started to get more in to metal and heavier music, and appreciating the heavier side of DT more, and my love for Surrounded and AD waned. I still don't listen to either of them much, bit today much prefer AD to Surrounded.

I think I've only heard that 2007 version of Surrounded once. I might need to give it another listen. I like when they throw in a riff or a solo bit in to a song, but don't like it when they add in a vocal part. And Sugar Mice is a pretty lame song to begin with.

The first time I heard the Mother solo in the live medley, I nearly shed a tear. I aleady very much enjoyed Surrounded, but that just made my love for the song skyrocket.

Fixed for me.
