Help me choose a new guitar
« on: February 09, 2011, 05:32:52 AM »
I'm looking for a new guitar. I recently bought a PRS 22 fret https://i.imgur.com/JlF0u.jpg which is lovely, but has limitations.
It's more of a 'feeling' guitar, rather than a 'shreddy' guitar if you know what I mean.

So I've been thinking; I know what I want in a new guitar but I don't yet know what that guitar is. Maybe you guys can help me?
I'm looking for:

24 frets
Ample space to be able to play the full fretboard with no restrictions (I've previously had some issues not being able to reach 20+ on some guitars, and it's really pissed me off)
Floyd Rose Tremolo Inc. locking nut
Soloist/Strat shaped body This is negotiable, but I wouldn't want an ES 335 shape for obvious reasons
Great tone/sustain
Price range around the £600 mark (that's ~$964.98) This is negotiable

I'll be playing mainly riffs, metal, prog-metal, solos, lead so you've got some idea.

Ideas I've had so far...

Ibanez - Although there are so many models I wouldn't know where to start.
Someone mentioned the RG1527m specifically.

ESP LTD 600-1000 H Series

Schecter Hellraiser C-1 FR

JP50

There's just too much choice IMO, and I can't really go out and play all of these as my local guitar shops don't stock them as standard. Anyone have any opinions?

I love Ibanez guitars.  Not sure I've played one that I didn't like.  That said, I've never played any of the other names you listed, so I'm pretty biased.  An awful lot of 80's shredders used Ibanez, including Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Paul Gilbert, and (at one time) JP.

That white LTD is amazing. I'd personally go with that one.

I second the Carvin DC line -- I have the DC 127 and it's great. You'll want to get a different bridge pickup than the standard one that comes with it, but that's easy enough.
—No, continued Aunt Kate, she wouldn't be said or led by anyone, slaving there in that choir night and day, night and day. Six o'clock on Christmas morning! And all for what?
—Well, isn't it for the honour of God, Aunt Kate? asked Mary Jane, twisting round on the piano-stool and smiling.
Aunt Kate turned fiercely on her niece and said:
—I know all about the honour of God, Mary Jane

I own a number of Ibanez guitars and they're all great; any that has neck-thru construction will give you outstanding upper fret access, the bolt on's are good too.  Or if you're interested in a 7 string, the Dean RC7X is supposed to be pretty cool.
