Post your 2011 hauls here!
« on: February 09, 2011, 05:15:23 AM »
I know there's a rate my haul thread, but I'm interested in seeing which albums people are buying from this year specifically. I think I can get a lot more good recommendations about newer music that way than if I just opened a survivor or something.

Remember, 2011 releases ONLY.

Anyway, I'll start.

Stuff I've (or my girlfriend) bought on CD

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead- Tao of the Dead
Arch/Matheos- Sympathetic Resonance
Blackfield- Welcome to My DNA
Bon Iver- Bon Iver, Bon Iver
Devin Townsend- Deconstruction
Devin Townsend- Ghost
Dream Theater- A Dramatic Turn of Events
dredg- Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy
Eisley- The Valley
Mastodon- Live at Aragon
Mastodon- The Hunter
Opeth- Heritage
Protest the Hero- Scurrilous
Scale the Summit- The Collective
Steven Wilson- Grace for Drowning
Trivium- In Waves
Within Temptation- The Unforgiving
Wobbler- Rites of Dawn

Stuff I've bought from MP3 Stores

Alcest- Le Secret (Rerecording)
Eden's Curse- Trinity
Long Distance Calling- ST
Radiohead- The King of Limbs
Thomas Giles- Pulse

Stuff I've listened to but haven't gotten around to getting yet
Between The Buried and Me- Hypersleep Dialogs
The Dear Hunter- The Complete Color Spectrum
Symphony X- Iconoclast
Everygrey- The Glorious Collision
Death Cab for Cuties- Codes and Keys
Fair to Midland- (Forgot it's name)
Pendragon- Passion
Falkenbach- Tuirida
Abstract in the Sky- Midnight in Alaska
Alestorm- Back Through Time
Lupe Fiasco- Lasers

I'm gonna keep this thread up-to-date with my rankings of the year so far. The top 5 are, so far, pretty solid, while the rest pretty much move around constantly.

1. Bon Iver- Bon Iver, Bon Iver
2. Dream Theater- A Dramatic Turn of Events
3. Mastodon- The Hunter
4. Steven Wilson- Grace for Drowning
5. Scale the Summit- The Collective
6. Devin Townsend- Ghost
7. Devin Townsend- Deconstruction
8. Radiohead- The King of Limbs
9. Wobbler- Rites of Dawn
10. Arch Matheos- Sympathetic Resonance

Biggest Disappointment- Blackfield

I really want that album, and I'm fairly sure I'll like it. :P
As for my 2011-albums:

*Codes in the Clouds - As the Spirit Wanes
Post-rock, very melodic and catchy with fairly short songs.
Some solid tunes, overall a good album.

*Esben and the Witch - Violet Cries
Weird mix of drone, indie and goth with female vocals, I can honestly say that I've never heard anything like it before.
Some good songs on it, overall I don't really think I'll remember it at the end of the year.

*Adele - 21
Haven't heard her before so can't compare to the older material, but the music is like a mix of soul, jazz and pop I'd say, some good tunes, and it's a decent album.

*Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
Now this is probably my favorite out of the new albums I've heard, Post-Rock at it's finest, and this is already one of my favorite albums by the band.
Some nice variety on it also. :)

So far I picked up an album by a band called Hibria. Not bad.

The shining star kicking this year off is the new Deicide though. Awesome stuff.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?
LOOK AT THIS AWESOME SHIT AHHHHHH

Solid album, better than Polaris, but my problem with it remains the same as the last, I just don't have any strong desires to go back and listen to it much. It may not be the album, I just think I've blown out my desire to hear Stratovarius in the past few years. They are a band I've enjoyed a lot and at this point I just don't really feel the need to listen to them anymore... it's odd as this rarely happens to me.

The only one on my list that I've gotten to listen to is the new Evergrey album. Awesome stuff. It's definitely a strong contender for the best album of 2011.

Update from me...

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead- Tao of the Dead: In short, I like. But it's not quite perfect. Click the quote for the full review.

I'll start by saying that this really is the most ambitious thing that the band have done to date. One part concept record, one part comic book, it is truly a creative work that exists across multiple mediums, and I'll judge try and judge accordingly.

Scale the Summit- The Collective: It's just as good as the first two records-- because it is just about the first two records. It's nice sounding as always, but not particularly interesting to my ears. Over the past three records Scale the Summit have spammed us with nice-sounding, echo-y, delay-drowned riffs in 6/8 and semi-clean guitar solos. It's really time for something else now. I don't know. I hate to hate on such a group of cool 'working band' kinda guys, but they really need to mix things up next time.

Adding with The King Of Limbs (Radiohead, everyone should know by now) and Tennis' Cape Dory.

I really should check out Trail of Our Dead. I've been hearing about them here and there for a few years now and never taken the time to give them a listen.

Anyways, the new Eisley and Grayceon albums came out yesterday. Both are fantastic, and Grayceon's is easily their best release yet.

I really should check out Trail of Our Dead.

Well, their fanbase is pretty damn picky these days. In fact, prior to the last album's release, Conrad Keeley (the singer) blogged that they had told the labels that they were going into the studio to try and record an album of that will sell rather than another disc which desperately attempts to win back an "elite group of disillusioned audiophiles." And they're pretentious as hell. But they're pretty good. Early stuff is really stripped down alt/indie/punk, later stuff is like dredg without as much talent and polish but more attitude. Newer stuff retains the proggie elements they picked up in the mid-era, but still has a stripped down feel because they recently fired the keyboardist and second guitarist.

I'd say the new album is actually a good place to go. Otherwise, Worlds Apart is very good.

I really need to check out Eisley at some point.

Anyway my 2011 music so far...

Bought on CD:

Amplifier - The Octopus
Excellent album, really great return to the quality of their first album after a decent but not very interesting second album. When I heard it was a double album I was a bit apprehensive, but their sound has become more varied and the two hours just flies by. 8/10

Bought on digital download:

Shpongle - The God Particle (EP)
Very good stuff, but not nearly as interesting as their last few full-length albums, this is much more straightforward electronica. 7/10

Radiohead - The King of Limbs
Again, very good stuff, but slightly lacking something - I think it's just a bit one-directional in tone maybe. But that doesn't take away the quality of what is in there. 7/10

Listened on Spotify but not purchased:

Bright Eyes - The People's Key
Great album, really nice mix of their different styles. Solid indie album. 8/10

So yeah, nothing amazing so far this year, but a few really good albums.

Ariich is a freak, or somehow has more hours in the day than everyone else.
I be am boner inducing.

Dropkick Murphys - Going Out In Style -- Collaboration with Springsteen had me intrigued, $7.99 sale price was incentive to take a chance. Interesting. Not my usual cup of tea, so I have to give it a few more spins to see if it sticks and encourages me to do some more exploring of their back catalog...
