Ministry of Lost Souls Appreciation Thread
« on: February 06, 2011, 12:39:39 PM »
A song that gets crap on a regular basis. Sure it drags a bit, but it has a fantastic instrumental section and a great vocal performance. Also dat unison.

Discuss you appreciation or whatever.

Its definitely in my top 10. Its the song that made me LOVE DT when I found out about them. Its so melodic and has an immense build up before dropping off after an amazing unison into more melodic bliss

It's good, but there seems to be a really wacky part at around...well 11:40 maybe...right after he says "all the way to heaaaaveeenn!" it cuts to the Chorus, and it seems like it was a mistake.

I'll appreciate it.  Certainly not a top-tier DT song, nor even my favorite off SC, but still a good song.  I know the instrumental section gets a lot of criticism, but, for me at least, it's what the song builds to.  If it just ended before that section, I think I would find the song a bit boring.

Easily one of my Top 5 songs over the last 3 albums. Despite what some may say about the instrumental section, I think it fits well considering the concept and the lyrics of the song, and the transition is pretty smooth and natural, IMO, and the ending is just great!

Appreciated! :tup

It's not a great song by any means, but it's probably my favorite from Systematic Chaos. I don't understand why it gets so much flak.

Never drags for me. If I was to play only 2 songs from SC they would be Forsaken and this.
I love every note of it.

I do as well.  This is one of those things that no one ever seems to mention, but I think are fantastic.

I'll say it again.

It slowly builds up great but when it reaches the boring instrumental section it dies, then theres a great solo out of nowhere that has nothing to do with the song and finally somewhat revives to a decent ending after the gentle spoken words.

It's one of those "could have been great" songs.

I used to love it, really love it. But it didn't age well at all now it's kind of medicore. I just don't feel those deep emotions I was feeling from listening to it when SC was new anymore. I probably overplayed it I guess. But the transition to instrumental section and the ending solo (yes especially the keys beneath actually as there was already mentioned) are still flawless

Amazing song from beginning to glorious end. Favourite song on SC and probably top 5 or 10 overall for me. I've loved the melody, the instrumental break, the solo and the sweet-ass outro. The atmosphere created in the verse is perfect for this song. And the lyrics are pretty good as well.

Definitely love this song. It's got both DAT MELODY and DAT OUTRO in it.

It's been mentioned already in this thread, but that outro solo has got some of Jordan's best work on it. Simple yet beautiful.

Awesome song. JP's solos (the one right after the unison and of course the ending solo) are amongst his best.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

Great song but it seems so cut/paste with many inappropriately abrupt transitions ESPECIALLY from quiet to LOUD and it starts right from the 0s mark.  I adore the melodies and the "simple" solos too much to let the cut/paste bother me too much.

Certainly my second favourite from SC (behind Enemies), and in my top 20 at least. Haven't ever actually sat down and objectively worked out my top X, but for some reason top 10 seemed a bit to generous while top 50 seemed a bit stingy. Man I'm rambling alot today...

Anyway, the wave-like progression of the song gets me. Doesn't drag for a moment, very enjoyable listen.
I punch those numbers into my calculator and they make a happy face.

I haven't listened to this song in over 3 years now but I remember it being a very powerful song. Looking at it now though, I can't believe it's such a long song. Makes me think it'll be hard to stomach.

I remember learning this lesson back when Yngwie Malmsteen changed record company and released Fire & Ice.
Basically its a rehash of older ideas to appeal to a new audience.
So older fans will probably not be too fussed with this song (as well as the album) and newer fans will love it.
Its okay, very good in places but forgettable.

Abrupt transitions were DT's style at the start- just see WD&DU. Everything is like that on that one. I like it.

Yeah, but I know what he's talking about. In their other songs, the abrupt-ness sounds great, but there is something about this one that just seems unprofessional. I don't know. Doesn't take much away for me, though, honestly.

Got to love the instrumental, it works well and has the beautiful unison at the end. If they had cut it out and made a solo under the buildup to the instrumental, it'd be like hollow years.
I don't know how they can be so proud of winning with them odds. - Little Big Man

I really have no problems with this song. The main melody is beautiful, the piano lines are gorgeus and LaBrie is terrific. It's missing something, though (IMO).

Exactly.

When I listened to it for the first time I said Woah, I have a new top favorite DT song! Everything on it is very good, and it has some moments that give you chills (the "I wanted to deserve a place" James + piano bit and the heavy rythm guitar at the beginning of the instrumental section) but it's somewhat lacking. I think the missing part is a strong emotional impact on the listener on the second part, which is fine in the first part. If it could take you to a emotional climax like Voices, Learning To Live or Trial of Tears, it would be one of their best songs. But it gets emotionally stale at some point.

JP's hauntingly twisted story appeals to me.  it not easy to tell a David Lynch-esque story in song format.  not easy at all.
