EDIT: I need to read entire articles before I comment on them.

But really, it says it was a malfunctioning satellite.

Did they seriously just use "an artist's interpretation of a weather satellite" as part of their story? Jesus christ.

They had to use an artist's interpretation of a weather satellite because real ones don't exist. It's all explained here:

I'm hoping this doesn't turn the US and China against each other.  Like it or not, we really need to become their best buddies in the next few decades.

This is of course ancient history.  We've had crude A-sat capability since the Eisenhower administration and an effective program since '85.  While the '07 launch was certainly a demonstration on China's behalf, it also took out a rogue spy satellite that would have come down eventually anyway.  Like I've said in the past, China's evolving militarily in directions that we aren't.  Bully for them.

Between hackers, EMPs and a-sat, we really don't want any part of those people.  While I suspect that it could go both ways, I think they could probably turn our state of the art military into the equivalent of our 1920's counterpart,  and that's a domain we'd fair quite poorly in.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

While I understand why this could create concerns, there really isn't anything we could do. I don't understand why we need to flex our muscles at China, I really don't think it is in there best interests to attack us.

This, and it should be fairly obvious that it's unwise to challenge a rising power in the manner the US has chosen to.

Considering that China holds almost a trillion bucks worth of US treasuries, and that the US is its largest market & responsible for its export-led economic growth strategy; nah, I don't think they would attack.

Retaliate; maybe. Attack; no.

Threads prematurely killed by Riceball because he can't not bring economics into pretty much any argument: 2, #3 on the way.

china flexed, we flexed.

This is pretty much what it boils down to, at least I hope so.  From what I can tell, it sounds like an act of passive aggression at most, and the scenario of the satellite being a hazard due to damage being the most important reason for it's destruction, with a hint of a minor demonstration towards China seems most likely.  Riceball already did a fine job of illuminating the reasons not to go to war with China, so I feel no need to reiterate that.  We have no good reason to mess with China, China has no good reason to mess with us, and I really think, no, hope that what the Texas Pirate said is the mere case.

I love how they acknowledge that few take them seriously.
