Scenes From a Memory - Lets show some love?

Arguably, Dream Theater's best.

(Arguably meaning Images).

Edit - If Images is better, you better post a d*** good reason why.
There is so little respek left in the world, that if you look it up in the dictionary, you'll find that it has been taken out.

Uncle Ricky wants YOU to show some respek

Awake is #1 for me.  SFAM and I&W battle it out for #2.

I just listened to this album again today.  First Dream Theater album I've listened to in months.  It's not their best(Six Degrees is the best them) but it's still dang good.   :tup

Good album.  But not better than the three before it or the one after.

It's bottom 3 in terms of albums for me, probably. :)

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Wow, I'm surprised SFAM isn't in everyone's top 3.  The album is incredible from start to finish!

Good for you, but tastes vary. Why should this be surprising? It's one of the most natural things.

Totally agree with you man, they do vary.  It was just an opinion and a reaction based on my tastes, nothing more.  I was just under the impression that SFAM was hailed as a progressive metal masterpiece by most fans, and it surprised me that some ranked it so low.  I actually didn't like it much when I first listened to it, took a little while, much like the second disc of 6DOIT did for me.

Well, the biggest share of the DT fanbase hail it as a top 3 album, that's true. The only DT fans I know that don't like SFAM that much are myself and some people here.

As a progressive metal album it has all the makings of masterpiece but other than that it's underwhelming both musically and storywise. It definitely captures a time where the band did everything right to keep their footing though it seems to get this extra bump for blatantly showcasing itself as a concept album.

I agree with that. People seem to love concept albums more than "regular" albums just for the fact that it's a concept album. I don't think I'll ever understand that.

I think it's the same mentality as double albums in the whole "well the band tries harder" aspect.

This was my favourite Dream Theater album for a very long time, and was the first album of theirs that got me into them (though I started out with odd songs from other albums before buying this one). For me it is as close to a perfect album as Dream Theater have made.

Having said that, even though it is probably still my favourite Dream Theater album, I have noticed over the years that I tend to listen to it less and less as time goes on. I actually can't remember the last time I listened to any of the songs off this album now that I think about it. :|

Train Of Thought, Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence, and Images And Words are better than it, at least.

It's amazing though.

It's a top five of all time for me, along with Images. can't seperate them and don't need to.
Interesting story with every track advancing the story (unlike seventh Son and even Mindcrime). Musically excellent.
It's loved here.

It wasn't.

It's a great album for sure, but is only 3rd at best for me, behind Images & Words and Awake.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

My 4th favorite DT album. I like the concept and the fact that there are no pauses between the songs (or scenes), it flows as if it was one long song.

When I was first getting into DT SFAM was #2 overall (behind Six Degrees) but it didn't really age well with me. I started getting more into Awake as well as newer releases (ToT and SC) so right now I'd probably put it somewhere around 5 or 6.
