Does a voice count as an instrument? I'm assuming so.

Write, record, everything. What you turn in should have been entirely produced in that timeframe.

This begs for the question: Is mixing time included?

I can do all the recording and writing in 2 hrs, but I'm not entirely too comfortable with my mixing software. By mixing, I mean I will only put the two recordings together - no added effects or anything. Or does this go into the 2 hrs? (I could totally live with that though)

Yeah, it's included in the time, but don't worry about it too much. I mean, if you go a bit over because you having trouble combining two already recorded tracks, don't worry about it.

Is it legal to have multiple layers of one instrument?

Uh.. depends what you mean by layer.

Basically you should only have two parts in the entire song. It can be two guitars, or a guitar and piano, or piano and voice, etc. You can't layer the instruments though, so if you have a guitar and piano part, you can't double the guitar. Two instruments, two tracks, that's it.

Alright.

I think I'll stay out of this one.  My broken arm is going to make it hard to pull off something that I actually play, and anything electronic with this little involved will just sound silly.

I'll still follow and vote, though.   :tup

Fuck... started playing piano, but too painful. Scalded my hand making pasta about three quarters of an hour ago.

Bollocks. Ah well, will have to wait till later.

EDIT: Although DTisMaj's ninja'd injury does make mine look fairly benign.

Best edit ever. Will try and get this done on Wednesday. I'm debating whether recording two real guitar parts or a midi thing so I'm not restricted...

I actually changed my mind and figured I might just do something quick.  Very quick, it took me about 30 minutes, give or take.  Nothing here but piano and timpani.  I'm actually much more of a maximalist, and I would usually add a lot of strings and brass arrangements to this, so I guess this was kind of a lesson to me in minimalism.

I still might flesh out this idea, I kind of like the melody of it.

There is probably enough reverb/echo in this piece to make Devin Townsend blush  :D

I've done it.  I've made a song longer than 3 minutes!  With only two channels!  If anyone has any doubt that it is only two channels I can screencap.  If you don't think it counts, I'll do another one.

It's called "The Haunted Pinball Machine."  Inspired by creepy Boo stages in Mario games and the feeling you get in a dark dusty room.  Enjoy?

Another great song SDN!  You've really got the whole chiptune thing down.

If I can say one negative thing about the song, it's just that the main synth is a bit to loud and heavy on the frequency.  It kind of takes up all the space in the song when there are many other cool things going in.  Great song, though.

Huh, that's odd, when I was listening to it in the program, I actually had it turned down.  Sometimes it doesn't sound exactly as it should.  brb fixin' things.

EDIT: okay, fixed the envelope on the the second channel synth.  Lets the other stuff shine through more, which in the program almost sounds a bit TOO soft, but I can't believe I didn't notice the loudness problem when i was first working on it.  Thanks for the feedback, dtismajesty.  I'll listen to yours and upload my fixed song tomorrow after sleepytime.

Thoughts on the rounds so far:

Sigz:  :metal, followed by that sort of super-prog section was so great.  Kind of reminded me of "The Last Baron" by Mastodon.  You have a lot of really cool chord progressions in this song and a good command over the GP5 drums.

DTisMajesty: Oh man, very dark and foreboding.  This was super, super cool.  After the first drum part, I had the feeling I was in some sort of diamond cave with the tinkling feeling of the piano, till those drums came back and put the fear of death in me.  Would love to see you flesh it out more, as it seems like its over too quickly, but I'd keep it to drums and piano when you revisit it.  Atmosphere is top notch.

Jsem: Wow, the first song proved you could do metal, this one proved your versatility!  The song was giving me a jazzy/bluesy Billy Joel sort of vibe until the 2:14 mark, which is always a good thing!  Wish the piano was a bit louder during the sax solo, because that was a really cool progression.  The sax melody after the 2:14 transition was great as well.

Round 2 so far is crushing round one in terms of everyone's new song compared to their last one so far.

Sigz:  :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal :metal

Drums are fantastic. The midi guitar sounds suck for metal though... so the fact that his made my headbang pretty epically means it's REALLY good.

DTismajesty: You did that in 30 minutes?  :hefdaddy.. and you're injured. Great stuff. +10000 for atmosphere

SDN: I'll have to admit I don't like chiptune that much. With only 2 layers you did presumably a great job though, because the entire song came across to me. The melodies were good.  :tup

Jsem... DTF's official sax man.

Yours is awesome.  Absolutely awesome.  I particularly love this down tempo, free style of jazz.  Reminds me of late nights in LA when I was young.  Your sax playing is great, it's very dynamic and also really impressive when it comes to those quick runs.

Aye, absolutely. Everyone's their own worst critic.

That said, probably in too bad a mood to really be able to summon up the willpower. Might contribute this round, might not. The scalding's basically healed already - just a bit red now.
