Butt rock
« on: January 28, 2011, 10:35:22 AM »
I had not heard the term "butt rock" prior to today, I don't think.  I read about it on Fark and apparently the original concensus was that it referred to late 80's bands and such.  The more common name for that (aside from glam rock, hair metal, etc.) is "cock rock".

Someone suggested that "butt rock" included bands like Creed, Nickelback, Seether, Daughtry, Finger 11, etc.  The definition that was then offered, that I'm sticking with from now on, was "if it sounds like something Chad Kroeger would crap out, it's butt rock."

Butt rock, as how I understand this really undefined term, does not refer to the music itself, but rather the lyrics. AKA "I like your pants around your feet," etc., and bands that use that lyrical style in their albums (Nickelback comes to mind).

Love or hate Creed, the one thing they are not is butt rock.

I see your point, but Creed, in terms of instrumentation, annoying voice, and pretty much everything else, sounds (to my ears) like something that could've come straight form Chad Kroeger's ass, therefore butt rock.

Haha, me and my buddies use the term "butt metal" all the time to refer to bands like this...  We got the term from the Steel Panther video for "Death to All but Metal" though...

Well as I've said before Creed's first album was good. I didn't like Human Clay at all, and Weathered was... Meh. Staind can write some good some songs once in awhile (No pun intended) but yeah, for the rest almost all the bands in that genre suck. Specially Nickelback and Hinder.
Also,

most 80's Metal, specifically Hair Metal and most Power Metal I would refer to as "butt rock." I'd also say a lot of that has to do with the vocalist 1st and foremost. If their singing (and/or lyrics) sounds incredibly cheesy, the term "butt rock" comes to mind.
