The awesome lyrics/lines thread
« on: January 27, 2011, 09:16:04 AM »
Thought we needed to counter the thread of bad lyrics with some really good ones!

I'm trying to think of my favorites.  In the mean time, go!

A father's benediction as his hopeful son departs
to brave the sea of rage and conquer at all costs
lingers in his memory
and visions still surviving in a logic-proof shell
that should have been held sacred, safe and hidden well
are compromised in usury

With every rising sun that yields no sight of land
the hesitation cultivates within the tired man
and rumors spread of mutiny
and though the time will come when dream and day unite
tonight the only consolation causing him to fight
is fearless faith in destiny
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

I remember there being a thread like this some time ago before, but I'll go ahead.

Take a look at yourself
Not at anyone else
And tell me what you see
I know the air is cold
I know the streets are cruel
But I'll enjoy the ride today

I always loved those lines from trial of tears

There's just too many to choose from, but out of all the bands/artists i know, i'm pretty sure Oceansize takes the prize for having the overall best lyrics.
Songs like The Frame, Music For a Nurse and Ornament/The Last Wrongs are just brilliant, and the lyrics in them is a big part of it.  :heart

I'll try to remember some others but this line is my favorite.

I gotta admit, the lyrics to Liz Phair's "HWC" are pretty excellent, when you consider it's her singing it.  I won't post them there here, but I'll post a Youtube link.  The lyrics are on the page, as well as the song.  It is not safe for work.  Headphones might be advisable.

Trick of the light or just
A loss of perspective
Flaw in the grand plan just
The way it is
Looks good from a distance but
Closer I come it
Becomes more daunting but
These moments will pass

Ultimately bored by endless ecstasy
- "Still Life" - Van der Graaf Generator

But now the nuptial bed is made,
the dowry has been paid:
the toothless, haggard features of eternity
now welcome me between the sheets
to couple with her withered body - my wife.
Hers forever,
hers forever,
hers forever
in still life.
- "Still Life" - Van der Graaf Generator

Once a man, like the sea I raged
Once a woman, like the earth I gave
But there is in fact more earth than sea
- "The Cinema Show" - Genesis

All of A Plague of Lighthouse Keepers by Van der Graaf Generator, but since it's 23 minutes I won't put them all here. :P So I'll leave it here: https://www.songmeanings.net/songs/view/3530822107858606133/

"Really don't mind if you sit this one out.
My words but a whisper -- your deafness a SHOUT.
I may make you feel but I can't make you think"

What a great song overall.

I need to get away
Innocence is overrated
The great loyalty give-away
Your ego was well compensated
All hail, Miss Understood
A sorry tale you almost had me
But for the greater good
Dear puppeteer, this show is over

Help me, I'm fading
A fairytale in negative
Failure invading
All throughout my time
These days are over
The love of my life is almost gone
And I can't be here without...

Your poison's good today
Those bitter almonds, jack 'em in me
We'll kiss the taste away
How effortlessly you force-fed me

Help me, I'm fading
A fairytale in negative
Failure invading
All throughout my time
These days are over
The love of my life is almost gone
And I can't be here without...

Jack and Jill are dumber still
By taking words for granted
Secret morning after pills
Lifestyles for the disenchanted

Help me, I'm fading
Taken by the enmity
Death by degrading
Witness to it all

Help me, I'm fading
A fairytale in negative
Failure invading
All throughout my time
These days are over
The love of my life is almost gone
And I can't be here (I can't be here)
I can't be here (I can't be)
And I can't be here without you

Wonderful little song. Poetic but unpretentious, quirky but not saccharine, sad but not depressing, and clever without being smug. Plus, so catchy. Jem Godfrey's an ace ol' lyricist.

Here's a few of mine

Jeff Buckley - Dream Brother

I feel afraid and I call your name
I love your voice and your dance insane
I hear your words and I know your pain
Your head in your hands and her kiss on the lips of another
Your eyes to the ground
and the world spinning round forever
Asleep in the sand with the ocean washing over

Demians - Black Over Gold

It doesn't matter much to you or to me
Whether we die on the land or on the sea
The sun will shine, a thousand rains will fall
But your generous grave will hide us all
Rip me open to see in front of me
Immerse me and all I know
What is untold is worth all the gold in the world

Tom Waits - Dirt in the Ground

What does it matter, a dream of love
Or a dream of lies
We're all gonna be in the same place
When we die
Your spirit don't leave knowing
Your face or your name
And the wind through your bones
Is all that remains
And we're all gonna be
Just dirt in the ground

Tallest Man on Earth - I Won't be Found

I know there is a hollow
I need to fill it with a draft
Of all the words that I wont way
And with a quiet whisper
I send a curse upon the day
That never used the sun to see
The light

Pain of Salvation - Enter Rain

And the rain will wash us to the bone
Leaving thousands in its trail
Cleansing all the flesh wounds
Of our time, of every crime
Of every pound of dust and grime

In two seconds I will hit the ground
A moment stretched out over years
And my eyes will flicker and then something has changed
An empty cage, a crimson bud, a street of blood
A city rose sprung out to greet the rain

These are all Oceansize-lyrics:

"Time won't change a thing when I'm gone
Don't grip the wheel too tightly, my son
Everything you need is done
I would've thought you'd won by now
Oh no, no, no.
" - The Frame

"Shapes fall into place
For once in your life you make
A clean breakaway.

Love, so much to give
And too few to share it with
Wastes you away.
" - Music For a Nurse

Sonata Arctica - Fly With the Black Swan

Don't worry, I've done this before
It'll hurt like hell and leave you sore
No use escaping, hold on to your ticket of gold
and close your eyes...

And yesterday I saw you standing by the river,
And weren't those tears that filled your eyes?
And all the fish that lay in dirty water dying,
Had they got you hypnotized?

And yesterday I saw you kissing tiny flowers,
But all that lives is born to die.
And so I say to you that nothing really matters,
And all you do is stand and cry.

Radiohead - Fitter Happier (I LOVE the twist this takes in the end... be sure to read it all the way through.  Radiohead is a very dark band lyrically.)

Fitter, happier, more productive, comfortable, not drinking too much
Regular exercise at the gym, 3 days a week
Getting on better with your associate employee contemporaries at ease
Eating well, no more microwave dinners and saturated fats
A patient, better driver, a safer car, baby smiling in back seat
Sleeping well, no bad dreams, no paranoia
Careful to all animals, never washing spiders down the plughole
Keep in contact with old friends, enjoy a drink now and then
Will frequently check credit at moral bank, hole in wall
Favors for favors, fond but not in love
Charity standing orders on Sundays ring road supermarket
No killing moths or putting boiling water on the ants
Car wash, also on Sundays, no longer afraid of the dark or mid-day shadows
Nothing so ridiculously teenage and desperate, nothing so childish
At a better pace, slower and more calculated, no chance of escape
Now self-employed, concerned, but powerless
An empowered and informed member of society, pragmatism not idealism
Will not cry in public, less chance of illness, tires that grip in the wet
Shot of baby strapped in back seat, a good memory, still cries at a good film
Still kisses with saliva, no longer empty and frantic like a cat tied to a stick
That's driven into frozen winter shit, the ability to laugh at weakness
Calm fitter, healthier and more productive, a pig in a cage on antibiotics

OK, many people will think I posted this in the wrong thread and expect this band to be in the worst lyrics post, but Warrant's Jani Lane writes very good lyrics. OK not on Cherry Pie, but songs like Uncle Tom's Cabin, I Saw Red, Andy Warhol was right, April 2031, are very good.
