Yeah, I think for an experienced examiner it's immediately obvious what race a skeleton belongs to. As you say, especially the skull makes it obvious, just like the hip bones make the gender obvious.

Celts were the first permanent settlers apparently but humans were in an out for thousands of years beforehand as the ice advanced and retreated.

i know that there is a distinct bump on the turkish skulls. pretty easy way to identify.

Yeah I remember studying this, and I believe that by the fall of the Roman Empire (i.e. around the supposed lifetime of Beowulf), it was a combination of Celts and a bunch of Germanic peoples.
