You should obviously go to Sonisphere.

Not that I'm biased by the fact they let me in free every year.

Nah, in all seriousness Sonisphere has the best lineup by far as of yet. The DL lineup is a terrific advert for Soni as far as I'm concerned.

High Voltage probably has the best lineup though it's by no means amazing, and Sonisphere and Download are both pretty shit. It makes me a :sadpanda:

High Voltage.  No contest so far...download is looking really pants with their bands this year, Sonisphere is alright and HV is the best.

Sonisphere - Big Four & Mastodon, others I'm not too keen on. I'm worried that this might be my only chance to see the Big Four, so that's a pretty big factor.

Download - A7X, Pendulum and Rob Zombie, although I'm not terribly bothered about missing these.

High Voltage - Total smile, and the first ever show with the new DT drummer (!)

So basically a toss up between seeing a historic show or a boner fest show. Guess I'll wait for more line up announcements.

Sonishphere and Download both have a few good bands but aren't that great overall. High Voltage is definitely looking like the best UK festival this year.

HV doesn't really appeal to me at all tbh.

I mean, I know part of the point of the festival is that it's got lots of classics on the lineup but what's the point in a festival without anything new and exciting on the bill? That's part of the whole point of festivals surely.

They have Black Country Communion, they only formed last year and there's still another 20+ top quality acts to be announced yet.

BCC are formed out of ex-members of bands like DT and Deep Purple, give me a break.

I know the bill is nowhere near complete but I mean from the bill last year as well.

I haven't noticed any up and coming bands on the bills for Sonisphere or Download either.

And the point of festivals is to see lots of good bands, regardless of how long they've been around.

The bills for Sonisphere and Download have barely been announced yet so that's a non-point Rich. If you looked at the bills for either last year then they both had LOTS AND LOTS of upcoming bands.

Again a non-point, I didn't say that festivals should only book young bands did I? I just said that HV seems to almost exclusively book bands of a certain, shall we say, vintage.

Uh, Download has had more bands announced than the others, and Sonisphere has had about as many announced as HV. :P

Probably on the small stage which nobody really goes to anyway. ;) But yeah, I'm looking at this year's announcements rather than last year's. Last year was the first year HV existed, so it's not really fair to judge on a single festival.

Well, it is run by Classic Rock magazine, so I'm not sure what else you'd expect. :lol

1. Yeah but the Download lineup is abysmal and has a couple of up and coming bands on it anyway. Additionally upcoming bands are generally smaller and announced later on, as well we both know.
2. Are you saying you never go and watch bands you've never heard of at festivals? You're doing it wrong. That's a fair comment about the first year admittedly but I don't see any changes any time soon, do you?
3. I'm not expecting anything else in particular, just saying I think it makes a festival far less exciting.

I'm genuinely hoping the HV lineup gets more exciting because I want to go to see DT but I really don't care about anyone else on the bill at the moment tbh, although I'd be vaguely curious about a couple of the bands.

I dunno, I do see some bands that I haven't heard of, but most importantly I check out bands that I don't already know, which I can do regardless of how long they've been around or whether I've already heard of them or not. I only really know 3 or 4 of the bands at HV, and I've only seen one of them live, so there's a lot of stuff that is new to me, which is all that really matters, surely? And as with all the festivals they start by announcing the bigger bands and then add the less well-known ones later on.

But yeah, fair enough if you're not really interested in the bands they have so far, although it's kind of a separate point.

I'd kill to go to High Voltage, Download would be my 2nd choice because of The Big Four and Mastodon.

Jesus Sonisphere has a good lineup, the big 4 wasn't a massive draw for me (I've seen all those bands except Anthrax several times before) but Gojira, Architects, Protest and Mastodon are great additions. My Dad knows one of the guys who arranges High Voltage so I was going to try and get in to that for free, but now I might have to give Sonisphere a go too. Only thing is I don't know anyone else who wants to go (although I haven't asked around) and I like to be surrounded by good people at festivals, as I tend to party a little too hard  :lol
