OPETH to enter studio in January 2011!
01-Dec-2010

That's right! Opeth will start the recording of their 10th album on the 31st of January 2011. The band has picked the legendary Atlantis studios (ex Metronome studios) in Stockholm and will once again work with Jens Bogren engineering. Mixing duties will be handled by Steven Wilson (Porcupine tree). Possible release worldwide in the fall of 2011, through Roadrunner Records. The new material has been described by the band as being "good".

Old news, but good news.

Let the speculation begin

I'd be hoping for something in a similar vein to Watershed; not just a giant wave of br00tal.
I punch those numbers into my calculator and they make a happy face.

When was the last time all we got was a giant wave of br00tal from them?  Quite a long time ago, I think.

Ghost Reveries was pretty br00tha. However, I expect this one to be really different from anything they've done. The recent interviews by the band really are OK with what I say so give me some food.

It was, but it wasn't a giant wave of it.

More like tsunamis of brutality, countered by frequent spells of beautiful calm ocean.  Which is, of course, the Opeth style

I expect something similar here, though surprises would be awesome.

Anyone else actually laugh out loud reading the band's quote?

I'm seriously looking forward to this release.  It'll be my first Opeth release as a major fan, and I'm stoked beyond belief.
"10,000 hours of practice - not talent - creates virtuosos."

"Sometimes you want to give up the guitar, you'll hate the guitar. But if you stick with it, you're gonna be rewarded."  - Jimi Hendrix

Sonically, I hope that this album sounds like Ghost Reveries or Deliverance. I really dig the sound of those albums.

band members described the material they have months to work on as 'not the shittiest song we have ever written, but we don't really feel like making it better'

Ghost Reveries definitely nailed their sound perfectly. Watershed felt more like Deli/Dam era which while not bad by any means, certainly wasn't as good as GR.

Though then again, it's probably mostly me whining about Lopez not being on drums...

I'm hoping they back to the Ghost Reveries type of production. That record secured Jens Bogren as one of my favorite producer/engineers in metal.  He did a great job on the last Symphony X as well.  Maybe we should petition to have him do the next DT?  (too late already though I know...)  His work just has a certain warmth to it that I love.

You're absolutely right. The production on Ghost Reveries is fantastic.
