Metallica, March 14, 2010.

That would be Pearl Jam at Rock werchter 2010.
unbelievable show that to this day is awesome. They played an awesome set and closed by inviting Alain Johannes and Dave Grohl up the stage and they started jamming on Kick Out The Jams by MC5.

Good times....
Nice! Are you from Belgium? (I am)

Well, I remember they opened with Would?. I had Facelift, but I found it strange they'd open with a song not on the album. I never really followed them after that. I thought Facelift was OK, reminded me of a little of Armored Saint. But there was something cool about them, especially outdoors on a hot July afternoon.

That had to be amazing. It is concerts like those that make me pissed off at old people. I mean, shit, Metallica played here during their Justice days and tickets were probably 20 bucks a piece, if that. I mean, shit, if I was born in the 50's, I would have had the 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, and now.

To be frank, I couldn't give two shits about that. :P

But seriously, I just came to this conclusion. If a jeanie came up to me and asked if I could be born into a upper middle class family in the early 50's, I would probably do it, provided I kept my love for music and my parents. I could deal with the lack of technology but to me, maybe I am mistaken but, those times had to have been so cool. I mean, just the general air to it all. It all seemed so musical. I mean, I could go see The Who one day, Hendrix the next, Joplin the next, CSNY the one after that, and Dylan the one after that. I would listen to actual records. Every show would be a fucking party. Maybe that isn't how it was, but if it was like that, I would trade what I have now for that. I would love to live in a world like that. Not sure if it existed, but it sounds amazing if it did.

I hear ya, but I think of all of the 70's shows I missed. Well, be happy with what you got. The coolest thing is that many of these bands are as good as they've ever been. Maiden, Megadeth..seriously, never been better. Metallica, well, I'm not sure what's in store for them, but I'm a huge fan of Death Magnetic.

I know but I just see old videos of different shows and everything is so much different. Concerts aren't parties any more, they are like fucking Broadway plays. I hear stories of what you have seen and what El Barto has seen and to be honest, I just get really jealous. :lol

My generation's music is pretty awful. I know I am pretty much the only person on these boards to think that because many people here are listening to new prog rock and metal that I've never heard of, but seriously, I can't think of more than 2 or 3 bands out of this fucking millennium that are worth wile.

I've seen a lot of good shows that were special in their own way.  I'll mention some and why they were good:

-Kick Axe/Whitesnake/Quiet Riot - Oakland Collosseum:  This was around 1983.  Kick Axe was touring on Vices, WS was touring on Slide It In, and QR was touring on Condition Critical.  It was a good show.  But what made it special was that it was my first real concert ever.  My friend and I had done a bunch of hard yard work for his dad (heavy meaning moving piles of dirt and busted up concrete), and he bought us tickets and sent us on our way.

Tesla and Def Leppard in 1987 - Oakland:  Lep was touring in the round for Hysteria.  It was a LONG set, and the in-the-round concept made for a really cool show.

-Y&T at the Omni in Oakland, around 1987 or 1988:  Medium sized club that was PACKED!  You could barely move.  The openers were a couple of really good local Bay Area bands:  Shea Roxy and Mad Anthony.  Y&T played a solid set and played a bunch of new tracks they were considering for the next album and let the fans vote on which ones they liked, which was cool.

-Suicidal Tendencies and Queensryche - Raleigh, NC - 1991:  Had just returned from the Gulf War and got to see Queensryche in their prime performing Mindcrime in its entirety.  What's not to like?

-Queensryche - San Jose - 1994:  There are a million bootlegs of this show in San Jose from the Promised Land tour.  The show was broadcast, and I have always suspected it was supposed to have been a live release, except the accoustics were bad and Geoff's voice was rough.  The sound guy messed up where you couldn't even hear Geoff in the mix in the beginning, and I think he strained his voice trying to sing loud enough to hear himself.  But they still sounded decent and in terms of the visuals and the concept, this was one of the most amazing shows I have EVER seen.

-Queensryche in Seattle in 2001:  The recording of the Live Evolution DVD.  The show wasn't great, but was pretty good.  What made it nice was that I had just finished taking the bar exam and had that behind me, and it was the start of a really fun and relaxing vacation with my wife in the Pacific Northwest where we spent time in Seattle, stayed in a multi-million dollar home right on the lake in Whistler for free, and then road-tripped across western Canada, staying at B&B's and camping out in the Canadian Rockies.

-Fates/Queensryche/DT in 2003:  This was my dream lineup.  QR was sort of "back" with the release of Tribe.  Two shows in a row in the summer heat seeing a good opener and two bands I had only dreamed of seeing together.

-Journey Sacramento - 200...5?:  Their 30th anniversary tour, and the last tour with Agueri.  This was an extended evening with set.  First set was mostly REALLY old, more obscure stuff, with some earlier hits thrown in toward the end.  Second set was hits and new material from Generations.  A friend who worked the venue got my wife and I really cool seats in the reserve section about 5 rows back.  Great show.

-Y&T 2007:  I got to take the stage and sing with a band I had been listening to for over 20 years.  How could this not be on the list?

-Queensryche - Portland - 2008:  I won a "sing with the band" finalist spot to sing in SF.  Tour manager dropped the ball and forgot to contact us until 15 minutes before the show.  No way I could have made it to SF in time.  Susan Tate personally apologized and arranged for me to compete in Portland.  The show itself was decent, but not great.  And unfortunately, I got sick and lost my voice, so one of the other finalists beat me out for the opportunity to take the stage with the band during the encore.  Still, it was a fun road trip with the wife and kids, and I got to basically do karaoke in front of 3,000 or so people on a great stage.

Lacuna Coil - Sparks, NV - 2009:  Fun road trip and show with Samsara.  I like this band, but am not in love with them.  The openers were horrible.  And yet, somehow, it was a GREAT show and a really good time.

Transatlantic - Downey - 2010:  I've talked this show up a lot.  It was great seeing the first ever performance of The Whirlwind, spending the day with really good people, meeting the band and Collin, sneakin' backstage, and roadtrippin'.  I've told plenty of stories about this show on the forums, including coming to the brink of fisticuffs with Mike Portnoy and Neal Morse, so I won't repeat myself.  All in all, some of the most fun I've ever had in connection with a concert.

Post too long to edit, but I just realized I should probably add Day On The Green, 1987.  The Bodeans (blah), The Pretenders (yes!), and U2 (yes! yes!).  It was sold out, and happend to be in the area for something else entirely, and got tickets from scalpers just trying to unload as the show was starting.  We got in the $12 each.  It was the Joshua Tree tour, and U2 were lengendary that night.  Plus, the Pretenders, so...yeah.  Great show.

TAC's right about a couple of points.  There are always shows that were before your time.  Hell, the year run-up to my first show had some great ones that I missed out on.  Maiden (PoM)/Saxon/Fastway was the last show my mom wouldn't let me go to, by about 2 months.   >:(  And of course I missed out on everything from the 70s.  Yeah, I guess I got to see some cool shit, but I was too late for a lot of good ones, just like you.

Also, a lot of those bands are a helluva lot better now than they ever were.  As I mentioned earlier,  I had always considered the World Slavery tour to be one of my all time favorites, but frankly,  seeing them basically repeat it at The Forum a couple of years ago completely blew it away.  Better crowd.  Better performance.  Better appreciation for the music.  Better sound.  Which leads to another consideration.

All of those shows back then sounded like shit.  I suspect part of the reason for the mayhem was because you couldn't understand the music anyway.  When I saw Porcupine Tree last year, it was the God damnedest thing I've ever heard.  It was loud as hell, but you could hear every single cymbal shot with perfect clarity.  Concert sound has improved over the last five years or so to an extent that just amazes me.

Obviously, I dearly miss the good ole days when concerts were a lot more than just 2 hours of music,  but there are some things that are definitely better nowadays.

And another contender on my greatest show list.  The first Damaged Justice show, which was eluded to earlier.  Queensryche was great.  Spreading the Disease and Scott Rockenfield is what made me go out and by O:M the next day.  As soon as the lights went down for Metallica the crowd rush started, and I was at the barricade (from about 10 rows back) by the end of the second song.  During the first of several beer breaks, Newstead handed me a cup which I happily drank up.  About 45 minutes later there was another beer break.  He handed down another cup which I naturally reached for and he kicked my hand out of the way and told me not to be a pig.  Aside from the beer I came away from it with a pick and a drumstick.  After the show we briefly met Kenny Rodgers; nice guy.  All around kick-ass concert experience.

Outstanding.  That's how I'd do it (except for that whole marriage part).

I'll second that. It was a great show.
A couple of things..it was my 6th time seeing QR, and as much as I liked them, I didn't think they were that great in concert. Plus, I didn't even have Promised Land at the time. I had heard Bridge and figured the rest of the album sucked too. But I ended up going anyway, and I was blown away. It was a different and inspired band.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

bosky - that Lacuna Coil little road trip was fun. Looking forward to doing more this summer.

For me:

Queensryche - Jones Beach 1995 (epic, first time seeing my all time favorite band -- the original lineup)
Queensryche - Seattle 1999 (there was some crazy energy in this little rehearsal space that the band was renting. The decorated the stage and walls with the scenery from the Mindcrime tour -- not EMpire, the Mindcrime album stage stuff you saw in the videos -- and they played passionately and well. Geoff sounded amazing too. The new material was really full of life and energy, and people dug it. Great time).
Sevendust - Hartford 2002 -- you know that "buzz" you feel in the crowd prior to a band going on? This was one of those rare shows. My first time seeing 7D, and the band was coming off Lajon, the singer, losing his brother to a drive-by shooting. He broke down during the song Angel's Son and went back stage, and the crowd sang the rest of the song for him. After about 5 minutes, he came back, thanked us, and they killed it the rest of the night. Unreal.

So many more to think of. When I have my master concert list in front of me, I will talk more.

Probably a few that are tied...

Devin Townsend Project - Just saw them a few months back and Devin is such a great entertainer and all around spectacle.  Plus they played "Bend it like Bender" and let a bunch of fans come up on stage and dance!

Children of Bodom - I've seen them a few times, but the first time was on tour with Amon Amarth for "Are You Dead Yet?".  They were just so intense, and I think their songs really make the most sense in a live setting.  It's just fun, heavy, ass-kicking music.  And the GANG VOCALS are AWESOME when the whole crowd joins in!  Just incredible!

Alice in Chains - Just saw them recently with William Duvall for the new album.  When it comes to AIC, they just have the SONGS, you know?  They didn't have to put on much of a performance because the music is enough.

Kansas/Yes in 2000.

That was a great show, it was the Masterworks tour, right? If so, it was the best Yes show I have seen, out of many dating back to the 90125 tour.

No contest.   The Score show at Radio City Music Hall.

Everything else could only ever be an honorable mention.   But there are a few major highlights.

Metallica headlining the Puppets tour.   Maybe their 12th show with Jason????   Metal Church opening in their home town.  Metal Church crashed the stage at the end of Metallica's encore on pogo sticks.   Which was (as I would hear later) a prank in retaliation for Metallica unplugging MC's stage monitors during the opening set.

Slayer opening the Reign In Blood Tour *on Halloween* in Seattle.

Dream Theater Six Degrees show in San Francisco...the first time I ever traveled out of state *just* for a show.

Front row center at both the IAW and Awake tours...by virtue of the fact that I was the *ONLY* person waiting in line for tickets at the time.

And Bobby McFerrin....who passed a mic around the audience and let about 3 or 4 people sing a duet with him with a song of their choice.  I got to be one of them.  Bobby did the background vocal effects while I sang "Rocky Raccoon" by The Beatles.

Kansas/Yes in 2000.

That was a great show, it was the Masterworks tour, right? If so, it was the best Yes show I have seen, out of many dating back to the 90125 tour.

Yeah, the Masterworks tour. Great epics-heavy setlist. It was so cool seeing my two favorite bands on the same night too.
WHOA, NICE GRAPHICS!

Dream Theater Six Degrees show in San Francisco...the first time I ever traveled out of state *just* for a show.

I was there that night, way up high on my list too.

Story time.  I took a girl to that show who only knew of the 90125 stuff and Roundabout, but was a musician with strong roots in jazz and gospel, so I knew she would love it. Cut to the I get up, I get Down part of CTTE. I all of a sudden feel a hand on my knee. I turn to look, and she is looking at me crying. She mouths the words"thank you" and turns back to the show. Probably the single best moment of any of the hundreds of shows I have seen, to see someone totally new to the music feel it the way I do, an irreplacable memory.

Yeah great tour.

Rush 2002 first show of the Vapor Trails Tour.  So damn emotional as a fan.
