Best concert you have ever been to?
« on: January 20, 2011, 10:23:21 PM »
For me, it was this:

Quote
The listed headliners alone were enough to justify outrageous ticket prices for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s first 25th anniversary concert at NYC’s Madison Square Garden last night: Crosby, Stills & Nash, Simon & Garfunkel, Paul Simon solo, Stevie Wonder, and Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band can all fill arenas by themselves. Yet they weren’t even half the talent in the room. As each of those top-billed acts brought out one legendary friend or forebear after another to jam on stage, a truly epic event took form. (Check out a full set list after the jump.) By the end of the night — which was actually 1:30 this morning — the performers had succeeded at a goal that the Hall of Fame itself only sometimes reaches: They had presented a convincing rock canon, a rich history that’s still living and breathing in the present tense.

Every time I thought I couldn’t holler any louder, someone came along to prove me wrong. Paul Simon dedicating a sweet, sad “Here Comes the Sun” to George Harrison — with David Crosby and Graham Nash on harmony. Bruce Springsteen covering “Fortunate Son” — with John Fogerty growling along. Little Anthony and the Imperials singing a cappella doo-wop, their voices miraculously as heavenly as ever. Sam Moore (in a t-shirt reading “SAM/IS WHO I AM”) ripping through “Soul Man” and “Hold On, I’m Comin’” — with a top-form E Street Band plus a vintage Stax horn section behind him. Stevie Wonder paying tribute to Michael Jackson by covering “The Way You Make Me Feel.” Darlene Love building what Springsteen termed “a one-woman wall of sound” with some help from the E Street Band. Oh yeah, and some guy called Billy Joel coming out well after midnight for (Springsteen’s image again) a historic New Jersey-Long Island summit.

By calling out those particular highlights, I’ve short-changed any number of moments that would have been call-a-friend peaks at another show. That’s on top of all the headliners doing superlative tours through their own hit parades. It would have been exhausting if it wasn’t so exhilarating.

Tonight, U2, Aretha Franklin, Metallica, and who knows who else will take the Garden stage for a second Hall of Fame anniversary concert; both shows will air on HBO Nov. 29. If you’re a fan of things that are awesome, I recommend you tune in. Til then: Were you there last night? Which were your favorite performances? Weigh in below.

Hmm hard to say. PT last year was awesome but my favorite is probably the Diva Metalfest with The Agonist and Unexpect headlining. Unexpect live =  :hefdaddy :hefdaddy :hefdaddy

Rush this past summer. They aren't my favourite band (they're actually #3 behind DT and PT respectively), but their live performance was mind-blowing. What an awesome experience.

Pure awesome.

My first DT show was the first time they ever had to cancel a show half way through (Perth, 2008). That show was a colossal screw up from the beginning (was on Australia Day, got moved three times and then they destroyed the venue's backend sound equipment). DT were awesome though.

In terms of best concert, Karnivool were pretty amazing in July last year...set was essentially Sound Awake in a different order with a couple of classics sprinkled on top. They were sublime.

Victor Wooten @ The Catalina Club in Hollywood sometime last year... (small but unexpected so it wins)

Also... Seeing Ill Repute a few years ago was amazing!
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

Rush--Vapor Trails 2002.

The first show back after 6 years off.  After what happened to Neil, I never thought I'd see them live again.  Very emotional night for Rush and us fans.

I'll say Rush Time Machine Tour. It was amazing.
Very close to that I'd say a Kansas show for their 30th anniversary Tour. I found out about the show the day before they played. Never thought I'd get to see them.

Competition between three:
1) Riverside in a certain very weird club (and this requires a longer story), May 2008
2) Porcupine Tree in Wrocław, September 2009
3) Katatonia in Kraków, March 2010

Every one of these was absolutely amazing for different reasons.

Having worked for 10 years in media retail back when I was in school, I used to average 10-15 concerts a year.  I've seen some great shows (Genesis, Kansas, Queensryche Mindcrime tour, Pink Floyd, etc.), some fun shows (Bruce Springsteen, the first KISS tour when the put the makeup back on, etc.), and some awful shows (I won't mention any here; some artists just have off nights, I suppose).

I had met the guys in YES, Kansas, Ynwie Malmsteen, had an in-store appearance from Steve Howe.  Good stuff.  But...

Peter Gabriel for the SO tour was amazing.  I was sitting dead center, 2nd row.  Halfway through the show, he begins to sing "Lay Your Hands On Me", and the die-hard fans know what's coming.  I get ready with one foot on the floor and the other in my chair.  As soon as the "security" (no pun intended!) detail left, I literally hurtled the lady sitting in front of me to get right at the stage.  Being a smallish guy and about 18 or so, I was getting crushed.  But PG sang and paced the stage, and as he kept passing me he smiled at me.  Everyone was shouting "pick me! pick me!".  As PG began to sing the final chorus, the lights went up and he set his mike down.  I, too, was yelling "pick me!".  He looked down, smiled at me, and nodded.  Everyone backed up a bit (I was getting fairly crushed against the stage) to give me room.  PG walked up to me, smiled, and turned around-- his heels were in my face.  I grabbed his heels, and he fell back into the crowd for his stage dive.  They pushed and pulled him around for a bit.  When they rolled him back on stage, his face was a mere 2 inches or so from mine.  What could I say?  I said "thank you".  He smiled, and nodded again.
That was one of the greatest concert events for me.

As a follow up, my buddy and I went to see PG for the US tour.  We had front row on the round stage out front.  Towards the end of the show, PG began to play "In Your Eyes".  Having several beers in us, we decided that we would do the dance PG and company did on the SO tour video (with Yousou N'Dour).  We began the dance in full view of PG.  He actually missed a couple of words as he began to laugh!!  He nudged Tony Levin to look at us dancing!  Next thing you know, everyone on stage was doing the dance as well!  It was pretty funny.

Yeah, I've had some good concert experiences, but PG seems to always come out on top.

Ted Nugent
AC/DC
Scorpions.

Great show.

Yeah, I gotta concur.

For a long time, I considered the World Slavery tour to be among the best.  However, seeing it again 23 years later at the Coliseum in LA was quite a bit better.  I guess that certainly merits runner-up consideration.  Honestly, though, I can name a ton of different runner-up shows, and the LTE gig was easily better than all of them.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

AiC would be in my top 10. Fucking amazing show and I got a pick from Jerry Cantrell. To me, he is one of the greatest metal (yes, metal) songwriters of all time, and Black Gives Way to Blue also solidifies his spot as one of the greatest riff masters as well! :metal

I've seen Bruce 3 times. One of which was the best concert I ever went to, as you see from the OP, but one of the other times would also be put in my top 10 or so. He just puts his balls on the line every night and I rarely see a crowd go that nuts.

I think the craziest crowd I have ever been to was Metallica at MSG on November 14th, 2009. I am aware that they are old farts but many showed up for Lamb of God so there was a pit the entire show, every member of the audience around me was into it (except for my dad, of course) and I actually saw some dude get thrown into the air during Fight Fire With Fire. The crowd when I saw Slayer and Megadeth was surprisingly lackluster. I mean, I expected chaos and I got a bunch of stoner sitting around me going, "dude, this is fucking cool." The crowd is a huge factor for me. For example, I saw Elton John last year. Everyone there was old so it was dead. And, it just didn't feel right.

Tie between Rush last year and Bruce in 09.  Both are amazing performers.  Bruce played my favorite song ever, Rush played my second favorite album ever.  AMAZING.  Honorable mention goes to TDH/PT/Coheed for having the greatest band package bill ever.

Opeth November 08. Ghost Reveries tour. Small ass venue. 2 and a half hour set. Insane crowd. Fun times.
Um...2008 was the tour for Watershed.

Which is actually the show I was going to post, when I saw Opeth in October of 08. Though, the two times I've seen Iron Maiden are basically tied with this Opeth show.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Honestly can't decide between Metallica, John Mayer and Bruce. Metallica had the most insane energy I've ever felt at a show, John Mayer was far and away the best musically PLUS he played my second favourite song ever which is fairly rare for him, and Bruce is Bruce.

Probably Monsters Of Rock at Donington in 1984.
AC/DC
Van Halen
Ozzy Osbourne
Gary Moore
Y&T
Accept
Motley Crue

the other standout was Jeff Scott Soto at a tiny club in Wigan, Uk, on Halloween a few yaers ago. Intimate doesn't begin to describe it. they all came out in KISS makeup but sweated it off within a couple of songs. A fun and superb gig.
