Having worked for 10 years in media retail back when I was in school, I used to average 10-15 concerts a year. I've seen some great shows (Genesis, Kansas, Queensryche Mindcrime tour, Pink Floyd, etc.), some fun shows (Bruce Springsteen, the first KISS tour when the put the makeup back on, etc.), and some awful shows (I won't mention any here; some artists just have off nights, I suppose).
I had met the guys in YES, Kansas, Ynwie Malmsteen, had an in-store appearance from Steve Howe. Good stuff. But...
Peter Gabriel for the SO tour was amazing. I was sitting dead center, 2nd row. Halfway through the show, he begins to sing "Lay Your Hands On Me", and the die-hard fans know what's coming. I get ready with one foot on the floor and the other in my chair. As soon as the "security" (no pun intended!) detail left, I literally hurtled the lady sitting in front of me to get right at the stage. Being a smallish guy and about 18 or so, I was getting crushed. But PG sang and paced the stage, and as he kept passing me he smiled at me. Everyone was shouting "pick me! pick me!". As PG began to sing the final chorus, the lights went up and he set his mike down. I, too, was yelling "pick me!". He looked down, smiled at me, and nodded. Everyone backed up a bit (I was getting fairly crushed against the stage) to give me room. PG walked up to me, smiled, and turned around-- his heels were in my face. I grabbed his heels, and he fell back into the crowd for his stage dive. They pushed and pulled him around for a bit. When they rolled him back on stage, his face was a mere 2 inches or so from mine. What could I say? I said "thank you". He smiled, and nodded again.
That was one of the greatest concert events for me.
As a follow up, my buddy and I went to see PG for the US tour. We had front row on the round stage out front. Towards the end of the show, PG began to play "In Your Eyes". Having several beers in us, we decided that we would do the dance PG and company did on the SO tour video (with Yousou N'Dour). We began the dance in full view of PG. He actually missed a couple of words as he began to laugh!! He nudged Tony Levin to look at us dancing! Next thing you know, everyone on stage was doing the dance as well! It was pretty funny.
Yeah, I've had some good concert experiences, but PG seems to always come out on top.
