I agree with you there. Playing the Angel definitely established that DM can still be creative, exciting, fresh, and inspirational even that late in their careers.

Also, Andrew Fletcher said they'll be back in the studio soon to record a new album. YAY.

Matthew Dear remixing Depeche Mode would be fucking insane.  Looking forward to it all the more now.

"Sounds of the universe" was awfull.

"Delta Machine" is really better (not too difficult...), there are some songs I really love, like "Angel", "Sooth my soul", "Goodbye","Heaven", "Soft Touch/Raw Nerve", "Slow" and "Long time lie".
But I don't like the rest of the album.

"Delta Machine" is a good album, definitely not a great one.

My DM top 5 remains unchanged (and I think it will stay the same):
 - 1) Songs of faith and devotion
 - 2) Violator
 - 3) Ultra
 - 4) 101
 - 5) Playing the angel.
OH MY GOD, I'M WATCHED!!!

new album rules

It's alright. It doesn't touch stuff like Playing the Angel, Violator or Black Celebration, but it's fairly enjoyable.

I never actually checked out Sounds of the Universe, so I can't compare the two, really.

Man, I could not disagree more. I listened to Delta Machine two days ago, and it was soooo underwhelming. Seriously, there is barely anything going on in those songs. Sounds of the Universe is awesome though. In Chains, Wrong, Fragile Tension, Peace, the general atmosphere of the record. I love it.
Hire me. I'm talentless but malleable.

Sounds Of The Universe was okay it has some pretty good songs some very good songs but overall it wasn't fascinating at all. Delta Machine on the other hand is IMO their best album since Violator all the way it's incredibly consistent there are no weaker points well maybe My Little Universe which could have some more variety but it's still interesting song. And there are songs that are really flawless like Welcome To My World, Broken, Should Be Higher, Alone, Goodbye. I can't get enough of this album and I really love Depeche Mode I'm really looking forward to see them live :)

I felt Sounds of the Universe was excellent, their best album since Violator. Delta Machine goes on "kinda" the same vein but each album has a different vibe to it and takes a few listens to really soak in. Not sure where this album will fit in? I like it, but I'm not as impressed with it as I was with SotU. But there are some stellar tracks on this album. I find the last half of the album better than the first half. And as always they save the best for last. This seems to be a regular thing for them.  :tup

Never heard this band, but I picked up Violator for 5 bucks. Did I make the right choice, DTF?

Yes :tup

I haven't heard a lot of DM albums, but I really like Violator, Songs of Faith & Devotion and Music for the Masses.

Whoa, this thread has been idle for 4 years!

I'm seeing a DM tribute band ("Strangelove") on Thursday, judging from the Youtube video they are dead-on.

Didn't wanna create a new thread so I post this hear since they include an amazing version of Enjoy the Silence.

The Ultimate 80s Medley (Van Halen, A-Ha, Tears for Fears, Depeche Mode, etc.)

1. Van Halen - Jump (Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony, David Lee Roth)
2. Survivor - Eye of the Tiger (Frankie Sullivan, Jim Peterik)
3. Peter Gabriel - Sledgehammer (Peter Gabriel)
4. Tears for Fears - Everybody Wants to Rule the World (Roland Orzabal, Ian Stanley, Chris Hughes)
5.  A-Ha - Take on Me (Magne Furuholmen, Morten Harket, Pal Waaktaar)
6. Europe - The Final Countdown (Joey Tempest)
7. Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence (Martin Gore)

I love this band!

Enjoy The Silence came out in early 1990.  Nice try though.

The very soul of what was once real music is now lost in a digital quagmire of emotionless sonic madness.

It was recorded in 89 and released 5th feb 1990 so yea technically it's not released in the 80s but it feels very 80ish.

That's really not important though, I just love the production quality and how good the band sounds in this video, their covers are always excellent.  :)
