So I finished my first listen through this opus. INCREDIBLE. If you loved Sympathetic Resonance, you'll absolutely be drooling listening to Winter Ethereal. It has all those aggressive moments, but the atmosphere and mood is ratcheted up a ton, and I think it lives up to the description regarding the record being a bit more diverse. Not shockingly so, but enough so that it really sounds fresh and exciting.

It is WELL worth the wait. If you haven't pre-ordered, wondering whether you'd like it -- trust me, go pre-order. Really impressed with what Jim and John have done here.

p.s. the solos section in Never in Your Hands -- OMG. Just pure crazy trade-off shred.  :metal :metal :metal  That then perfectly transitions to a great moody passage.

Any other comments you’d like to make on the album? Does Mike Abdow have a guest solo in there somewhere?

I’m SO pumped for this album!

That is very cool news. Sympathetic Resonance is an amazing album. Haven't heard it in a while but now I feel the need to play it.

I never did play it. BUT am looking forward to this album!

Just heard Straight and Narrow, killer song! At first I did not care for his singing but now I really love it, so unique, fits the music so well.

Wanderlust is available on iTunes now! :hefdaddy Interestingly the main riff and overall vibe of the song reminds me a lot of Awaken the Guardian, albeit with a modern production and more recent musical choices/stylistic flourishes that Jim uses nowadays as a guitarist and songwriter.

How would you say it compares to Sympathetic Resonance and the recent Fates Warning albums?

Straight and Narrow reminds me of parts of that more than SR.

I think there's elements of Theories of Flight in the songwriting. There were a couple of times that what Jim was doing, guitar-wise, made me think of recent Fates (Darkness/Theories). In general, I'd say that the record is a touch more melodic than Sympathetic Resonance, and John doesn't quite feel the need to hit the stratosphere all the time. But the songs -- are much stronger as a whole, and I think the solos are too.

You can really tell that Jim and John are on the same page, and really have done what they said -- they sat together and really worked all of this over. The result, at least to my ears, is so far my Album of the Year.

Finally got to hear it all for myself. Maaaan, what an album! I will say it's significantly more to take in than anything else Jim's made in the past decade, so I'm going to have to really dig in deep and get more familiar with Winter Ethereal over the coming summer, but my first full listen was an insane ride.

Currently I'd say that my initial favorites off the album are probably Vermilion Moons, Wrath of the Universe, Tethered, Pitch Black Prism and Kindred Spirits. Never In Your Hands has that killer guitar solo trade-off segment between Jim and Frank Aresti, but I'm going to need more time to let that song simmer in my head.

Also, Tethered might just be John's finest vocal performance ever. Or at the very least, it's one of his best IMO.

This is good so far. I like Arch's voice but sometimes the vocal melodies are just all over the place. Some of the lyrics are bad. Musically this is pretty cool, sometimes the songs go on a bit too long though. I'm enjoying it.

From the sound of recent interviews with John, it doesn't seem like we will see any live shows soon. It sounds like he's got some family responsibilities to take care of for the foreseeable future?

Do you know which drummer is playing in each song? Thanks!

Yeah, I'd love to know the answer to this too! I know Zonder is on Wonderlust, while Jarzombek is on Straight & Narrow and Matt Lynch is reportedly on Kindred Spirits. No clue about any of the other songs.

Meanwhile I have just about no clue about what songs the bassists all are on, so that'd also be really helpful and cool to know more about!

The stand out tracks for me so far are Kindred spirits and Never in your hands. I don't really care for Wrath of the universe, but besides that everything else is solid.

Is it just me or does the opening guitar bit on Wrath of the Universe show love to Blackwater Park-era Opeth? Obviously John's vocals are worlds apart from Mikael's and the main riff kicks in quick, but that opening Gilmour-ish guitar line from Jim reminds me a lot of stuff Opeth used to do. :metal

Funny that you mention it, but Jim is an Opeth fan. He addressed it in a few interviews during the Darkness album cycle.

100% agree with this post. Kindred Spirits and Never In Your Hands are the two highlights for me. Straight and Narrow is up there, too.

Yeah, I knew about that ;D I mean, Into the Black feels like Jim's love letter/tribute to Opeth musically at certain points IMO and it's easily one of the best tracks on Darkness.

I just noticed that WotU changes gears quite a bit after that initial opening part. Definitely one of my favorites off the album so far. It might just be the heaviest song Jim or John have ever worked on!

According to the booklet:

Bass

Sean Malone: Pitch Black Prism, Kindred Spirits
Joe DiBiase: Solitary Man
George Hideous: Tethered

Drums
Thomas Lang: Vermillion Moons, Solitary Man, Pitch Black Prism
Bobby Jarzombek: Wrath Of The Universe, Straight And Narrow
Mark Zonder: Wanderlust, Tethered
Matt Lynch: Kindred Spirits
Baard Kolstad: Never In Your Hands

Yes, Aresti plays solos in Never In Your Hands and Kindred Spirits

I had a feeling that was Aresti on a solo or two in Kindred Spirits! He has a rather distinctive sound and style to his playing these days, so I was guessing it was either Aresti or Jim had opted to try and compose a few solos in Aresti's style.

A little bummed that Mike Abdow didn't do any solos here, but Jim really impressed me with all of the solos he did here. It's been ages since he last played like that on an album! :hefdaddy :metal
