great album. solid riffs, and sometimes reminds me of LTE

First 3 tracks are the best, but the whole thing is a fun listen

Of all the DT-related solo and side-project albums, this is definitely an over-looked and underrated gem, and I can personally say that I don't listen to it as much as I probably should! Definitely some great songs on there, and I look forward to hearing him put his second solo album out, hopefully sometime this year!

Great Album!
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I'm actually listening to it right now. It is amazing. It was even more amazing while on G3 tour with MP on drums.

I've listened to it a few times and liked it a lot.  I should listen to it more.  I like how the pieces aren't just five or six minute "guitar solos" but are more like songs, with verses and melodies and refrains.  I don't listen to a lot of instrumental guitar-based music, so maybe it's all like this; I don't know.  I guess I've listened to some Jeff Beck and Joe Satriani, and this is similar.  I like JP better than Joe, but I don't know if he beats Jeff.  Both of them have great patches.

Yes, I love the implication that because I love a CD more than you think I should I obviously haven't heard enough music.

Snobby overtones aside, while I enjoy instrumental music I don't tend to buy a lot of it and probably have 25-30 discs worth.

I take it with DT in the studio, the new JP instrumental album won't be released before the release of the DT11?

God damn linear time.

John Petrucci plays on his next solo album SO FAST that when everyone buys it on release day and plays it simultaneously through their respective sound systems, the notes suddenly reverse the normal flow of time and time starts going backwards, thus negating the release, recording and writing of said album and then no one ever gets to hear it again. Shhh. Petruccis guitar playing is part of the Speed Force. We are not meant to figure this out.

I'm fine, but if he decides to sacrifice himself in a cross-universe crisis, he's gotta come back before the next album starts.

He could always pull a Wally West of sorts. Play so fast he out runs death and pull himself from the Speed Force back to life.

Most of the riffs and solos are cool, but too repetitive for me...take Glasgow Kiss.  It's basically two melodies that repeat for eight minutes.

Or maybe I just don't listen to that much instrumental music.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. He beat me to it.
Im shocked to read that from you.
I found this album to be largely disappointing. It's a collection of riffs and other cut ups he didn't use on a bunch of different DT albums. He then used those tones\riffs to piece together a bunch of uninspiring songs to put out the solo cd all his fans were clamouring for. In each song I can hear a different "something" and I think to myself..."yup...he had this little ditty during I&W..guess there was no place for it then.............................there's still no place for it now"

It got about 5 spins from me.......and I can quickly and easily form a list of instrumental cd's I'd rank higher.
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.

All Satriani Albums.(except the one where he sings I guess if we're getting specific)
most by Vai
a few malmstein cd's
All Planet X cd's, and Derek's solo stuff....including the one that Petrucci played...and played better on than his own solo cd.
the Bozzio Levins Stevens discs
most Ozric Tentacles discs.
many if not all of bunny brunnel's stuff especially the CAB discs.
anyhoo...

i could really go on and on.....I highly respect the musical tastes and opinions of everyone at this board...but the love for this cd is really a whole lot of fanboy gushing. I love John too...but come on....put your impartial earphones on for spin or two. It's just "ok".
Take care everyone - Bet you all didn't even notice I was gone.
