Seen this twice. Didn't love it, but it wasn't bad. I can see why it might be that kind of movie people really get into, the characters were... interesting.

This movie came up in our flat once, a flat of six guys, and no-one was keen on it. One of my flatmates made the claim that "it's a movie Americans love and everyone else hates". Which isn't true, of course, but to my knowledge, I'm yet to ever hear anyone mention this in one of those film-pimping conversations you have occasionally, and it seems insanely widely appreciated in America.
Not sure I'd agree with that, everyone loves it here as well. Maybe it's just you and your flatmates. :P

I think that being an American helps. I am not saying you need to be American to dig it but I don't think some dude who does not experience "dudes" and "mans" on a nearly constant basis would find it all that funny. I talk like the Dude and it pisses people off! :lol

Come on Dude, let's go bowling.

What does that have to do with liking a film though? I don't regularly experience breaking out of prison, but I still absolutely love The Shawshank Redemption.

It is just the vernacular used helps us understand the situation. It is no biggie but if one would ever get annoyed at what the Dude was saying, it might be because the new vernacular was...well, new!

I am not saying you need to be an American.

And as a side note, I watched this movie again last night with friends.

Three funniest lines/scenes:

The coffee shop
The whole "This is what happens when you fuck a stranger in the ass" scene
And after Maude and the Dude bone, he asks her if she is doing yoga and when she said "It is supposed to help with conception" and the dude nearly died, I was practically crying.

Just watched this film for the first time there, got given it earlier in the week been waiting for a chance to watch it.

Took a while to get into it but it was pretty funny - although John Goodman completely makes the film for me. The overall film idea / premise / whatever I wasn't too fond of, it did have some good jokes though (or not so much jokes... just lines... you know what I mean. Reminds me of Clerks or something).

Seems more like the kind of thing that just becomes funny as an obscure thing to quote rather than just from watching it itself... I suppose that's what makes a cult film though :P

Wait a week or two, watch it again, wait another week or two, watch it a 3rd time.

You'll see.

Oh yeah...as soon as I started the two guys behind him broke out laughing.  I was able to keep up the charade about 10 more seconds before I started laughing myself.  I'll need to work on that.

Walter Sobchak: I'm saying, I see what you're getting at, Dude, he kept the money. My point is, here we are, it's shabbas, the sabbath, which I'm allowed to break only if it's a matter of life or death...
The Dude: Will you come off it, Walter? You're not even fucking Jewish, man.
Walter Sobchak: What the fuck are you talkin' about?
The Dude: Man, you're fucking Polish Catholic...
Walter Sobchak: What the fuck are you talking about? I converted when I married Cynthia! Come on, Dude!
The Dude: Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah...
Walter Sobchak: And you know this!
The Dude: Yeah, and five fucking years ago you were divorced.
Walter Sobchak: So what are you saying? When you get divorced you turn in your library card? You get a new license? You stop being Jewish?
The Dude: It's all a part of your sick Cynthia thing, man. Taking care of her fucking dog. Going to her fucking synagogue. You're living in the fucking past.
Walter Sobchak: Three thousand years of beautiful tradition, from Moses to Sandy Koufax...
[shouting]
Walter Sobchak: You're goddamn right I'm living in the fucking past!

In the 14 months since this thread was last resurrected, I watched The Big Lebowski.

As with all Coen Brothers movies, I found a lot of it to be amusing, some of it outright funny, and a lot of it very clever and I can understand why others would find it funny.  I can see why it would be one of those movies people would watch over and over, but I'm not in that category.  To me, it was "just" funny.

But as a plus, I now understand a lot of quotes that get tossed around here, and more of the avatars.
