Local libraries that have CDs?
« on: January 11, 2011, 11:54:20 AM »
A post by Kev in the Queensryche thread reminded me of a question I've been meaning to bring up for a while. I've always heard that you can check out CDs from the library in the same way you could check out books or movies. To put it simply, I've never been to a library that has CDs; the whole concept is foreign to me. I remember when someone first told me about checking CDs out at the library, I didn't believe them.

My question is, does your local library have CDs? If so, what is the selection like? And another thing, are they copy protected in any way? I mean, if I could, I'd just check out every CD I wanted, take them home and rip them to iTunes, and then return them. Surely there's a method to prevent people from doing that?

My local library system has a decent CD selection.  I've been able to check out anything from Genesis Foxtrot to Behemoth's new album (not to mention all the usual classic rock and pop music discs).  As for copy-protection, I don't believe there is on any of the CDs unless it was manufactured with it.  You could rip them, but the library just trusts that you won't.
In high school my buddies and I built a Van Der Graaf generator.  You know, to get girls.

Our library has more CDs than our Best Buy.  Rock/Pop, Jazz, Country, Soundtracks, Classical.  None of it is copy-protected.  DVDs, too, but you have to pay $1 for each.  You can only keep CDs and DVDs a week; you get three weeks for books.

It's that whole "intellectual property" thing (which we really don't have to get into here; I'm just saying).  They've got countless books on the shelves that you can borrow for free.  Theoretically, you could go to a copying machine a make a copy of an entire book.  CDs and/or DVDs are available for borrowing, and you could make copies of those as well.  Yeah, it's a lot easier and faster, but the principal is exactly the same.  They have to either trust that people won't do it, be well aware that people do it, or not consider that angle at all because libraries have existed forever and that's just how it works.

The libraries close to me have pretty good selections of classical music, and the one at my University is fantastic.  I'd recommend checking yours out as well :tup

I haven't been to my local public library in years, but one of the last times I was there, I do recall a fair selection of CDs/DVDs for checking out there. This thread reminds me to go there sometime soon and see what treasures they have in there!

+1

My University has a good music school, so there is a lot of classical music CDs and scores to check out.  I wouldn't be surprised if yours is the same.

My local library has CD's, maybe not loads but still a decent amount of them.
I doubt you would find stuff like Dream Theater there though, it's mainly Swedish music, and famous artists that gets played on the radio/mtv.

Not really sure, at least not for The Flower Kings.
It's funny because Pain of Salvation are generally disliked here in Sweden. :P

The library I went to last week actually had I&W!

Anyway, it can vary from branch to branch, but the selection is usually pretty good.

I haven't seen CDs in a library since the late 90s and maybe around 6 years ago.

The focus seems to have shifted, at least around my area and others I've been to not too far, on VHS and DVD formats. I haven't seen CDs in a really long time. I think it may have to do with problems of keeping them in good condition.

Yeah, some of the ones in our library get pretty trashed, but in a way, I figure that's a good thing because it means people are using them.  Most of the CD jewel cases are toast because all you have to do is break one of those stupid corner tabs and the case won't hold together anymore, so they're all in these big "shoplifter-proof" cases like in some stores.  The booklets get pretty shredded, too, but it's a library and they have lots of that awesome tape that lasts forever and never yellows.

In both Ottawa and Halifax the libraries have CD collections of varying sizes. I've almost never seen anything good, although I do remember taking out a few albums and ripping them back in 2007.

yeah, the libraries in Minneapolis and St.Paul have cds. I have often found more jazz than anything else to check out, but once in awhile I will find some rock disc to checkout. Late fees and lost cds? yeah I'm guilty of them. Why I often don't check them out anymore.

The good stuff my library has is probably a good amount of classical, jazz, and (for me) a select few of Christian albums.

Last library I went to had a basic selection, but nothing too extensive. Some mainstream pop, rock, jazz, and a bunch of classical.

As with books, I'm sure they tend to stock CDs based on what they think will have the widest appeal.

My local and the one near my work in Melbourne Australia has a great selection but you have to be quick, most charge to reserve a selection. I remember being impressed they had Steve Vai.....I have never seen Dream Theater though.....
