Blood is a bit too repetitive for my taste.
Don't get me wrong, I still really like it though.

I'm fine with repetition as long  as the thing that's being repeated is good.  "Here Comes the Blood" is much better than "Go to hell."

Well I'm not only talking about the lyrics, the main-riff is great, but kinda gets repetitive.
I kinda get the feeling that people who normally don't write heavy music kinda often stumbles upon the problem that it gets a bit too repetitive when they try to pull it off, in this case I'm taking it's Aviv that wrote it.

You think "Blood" is repetitive and yet you listen to Opeth? lol

(Not that Opeth is bad by any means, they're one of my favorite bands. But they're a lot more repetitive than any Blackfield song)

Well, to be fair I haven't really listened to Opeth in 2 years or so. :P
And well, by what I wrote I mean that Blood is repetitive by Blackfield-standards, and I'm not as captivated by it compared to some other songs, though obviously it's a great rock out-song, and the singing is great.

Far Away is still my favorite, I love it how simple and beautiful it is, and how some string-arrangements can really lift a song.
Not sure if it has gotten love in the thread before, but I really love the use of strings on this album, it's really done in the right amount and in the right places.  :heart

So, Waving might well be the only song I ever listen to from this album again. Far Away is pretty good too, but the rest of it is very sub-par imo. Not that I didn't really enjoy it live, but still.

Well, music kinda comes and goes in waves for me.
I still love Opeth a lot, but I know their albums in and out, and it's not really music that I can put on at any time, it has to be Autumn/Winter and the feeling has to be there.
Another fact would be that Opeth are kinda dead right now, sure they're recording a new album that I'm looking forward to, but until that one comes out or any tour dates are announced, I don't really think about them.

Nah, I see what Zantera means completely. It's summery weather now and it would ruin either the music or the summery feeling if I played Opeth. I have this with Sigur Ros too, among other bands.

Agreed.  If I'm going to listen to heavy music, its going to be Devin or Iron Maiden during the spring/summer.

Opeth is Opeth.

They are, and Opeth is a band that many people prefer to listen to in the fall/winter. Not sure what's so hard to understand about that.

Exactly.  Some bands make music that fits certain seasons just perfectly.  For example, Van Halen is great summer music.  Opeth is great fall, winter or rainy day music.  Listening to Opeth on a sunny day just seems weird.

Right, but avoiding listening to them in Spring/Summer is what I don't get.

It's not only about seasons and such, but when it comes to Opeth I feel like I know their entire discography in and out.
Obviously there's nothing wrong in going back and checking out albums you love, but I prefer giving artists some rest and check out new stuff, I feel like the music world is so big, that narrowing yourself down to X-amounts of artists is just a shame.

pretty simple. it's melancholic music with cold/distant soundscapes which goes with the weather of fall/winter. spring/summer is more of a happy time which doesn't fit with the music. i feel the same way, some melancholic rock like opeth or katatonia in fall as the cold breeze and red leafs pass you by makes the experience 'especially special'.

I doubt anyone goes out of their way to avoid listening to Opeth in the spring or summer, but I am a lot less likely to listen to them then than I am in the fall or winter (unless it is a rainy day or late at night).

Anyway, I finally got the new Blackfield CD and it is sounding great so far!

Dude what?
Welcome To My DNA is simply amazing, and apart from the lyrics in Go To Hell I really don't see anything negative about it, musically it's fantastic.

Well, I don't really get the hate for it.
Mostly because apart from a very few factors, like Aviv writing most of the stuff, this still sounds as much Blackfield as the first two albums did.
Song-wise the songs are just as strong as on the other two albums, sure people might say that this album has no classic in the sense of songs like "Hello" or "Once" on the first two, but the songs on WTMDNA are so good that it isn't needed.
I don't even care that much that SW didn't write much for the new album, because looking back at the other two albums, Aviv has always been the 'main'-writer for this project.
Surely SW has polished stuff and added his input, but that's another thing.
'Waving' is a fantastic song, but it's also something that feels really typical SW, Aviv on the other hand has delivered songs that I wouldn't have expected him to write, because a lot of the songs doesn't feel 'typical' Aviv-songs.

So yeah, in other words I really dig this album. :P

Well, they might not feel like typical Aviv songs, but to me they just sound like the most typical, uninspired songs I've heard from a band that I like in as long as I can remember. As I mentioned in my review, 'On The Plane' is just absolutely dismal, and kind of symptomatic of an artist that doesn't seem to have run out of ideas, but has just stopped even putting any effort in.

Still, I enjoyed the concert a lot anyway.  :lol

Upon my first listen, Waving is easily the best song, and I like Blood a lot. Not much else stood out, but I'll have to listen to it some more (while I can focus on it) before I pass judgment.

The new album is good, save the lyrics of Go to Hell.  Its just less amazing than the first two.  I've listened to it almost every day since I got it.

In this paragraph I had a paragraph-long critique of your review, but I just got really frustrated with it and your overblown statements about Blackfield's creativity (or as you think, lack therof).  I disagree almost completely (again, GTH and On the Plane are points I agree with you on), but the overly harsh language and the use of what you called "buzzwords" that aren't helpful to the reader made it a pretty bad review, to be honest.

Basically, it is exactly what you thought it'd be: overly harsh.  Next time you type that sentence fearful of how you'll come across, you should edit the review to make it a bit more sensible. :P

Fair enough. I did try to think of a way around coming off as sounding too harsh and calling it out for being generic, but that really is how I feel about the album unfortunately.

Also, I see your side of the argument on my statements about Blackfield's creativity being overblown, but I genuinely feel that the key flaw with the album isn't that it fails, it just doesn't even have the kind of spark that even the bad tracks on the first two albums had. I guess I just feel like it's a complete phone-in, which is why I reference their previous creativity so much.

I actually think Go To Hell is one of the few tracks that at least has interesting stuff going on melodically. But yeah, the lyrics make me laugh. 'Twas fun live, though.

The lyrics are laughably bad, but "Go to Hell" is pretty catchy.  The repetitive nature of the lyrics is quite hypnotic.  It was stuck in my head all evening.

I really don't get the hate for 'On the Plane', it might not be a favorite, but I certainly wouldn't rank it last.
Attempt at ranking songs:

1. Far Away
2. Oxygen
3. Waving
4. DNA
5. Zigota
6. Rising of the Tide
7. Glass House
8. Blood
9. On the Plane
10. Dissolving With the Night
11. Go To Hell

Something like that.
