I can't rank the songs yet because for whatever reason I felt I haven't listened to the album enough.

But I agree Go To Hell IS a great song and so are the lyrics. Yes, they're straightforward and in the face (and for me "I don't care" sounds far more powerful than all the "fuck you"). But it doesn't sound pissed off at all, it's just so... purifying. It just sounds like someone who got through a lot of trouble in his life and a lot of people who tried their best to make it more difficult either of pure bad will or simply ignorance, and then you reach that point when you can show them you succeeded anyway and can give them a middle finger.

Is it refined? No, maybe not. But...

I don't care.

Great post! I think you summed up the essence of the song right there.

By the way, because of this thread I suddenly felt like listening to Welcome to My DNA again today. Probably can rank tomorrow.

Well, what I know for sure is that my favourite is Zigota. I don't think a song about death can get more beautiful. Especially the chorus.

Blood is the best them.
Cole: "Ow I just got hit in the balls"
Me: "How?"
Cole: "Well you know when you try to scratch your balls, and you scratch too hard?
I'll admit sometimes I want to listen to Dragonforce.

It's been a while and I love most of these songs but I'll try...

1. DNA
2. Blood
3. Zigota
4. Waving
5. Glass House
6. Rising of the Tide
7. Far Away
8. Go to Hell
9. Dissolving with the Night
10. On the Plane
11. Oxygen
Oh Jackie, always jumping to the most homoerotic possibility.

I used to really love Blood, but it became really repetitive for me sadly.
I still like it though, but it would be fairly low on the album.

Ok, I'll give it a try anyway (fell asleep earlier than I wanted to yesterday).

1. Zigota
2. Dissolving With The Night
3. Go To Hell
4. Waving
5. Blood
6. DNA
7. Glass House
8. Rising of The Tide
9. Far Away
10. Oxygen
11. On The Plane

1-2 are amazing. 3-7 are really great. 8-10 are nice. On The Plane is the only Blackfield song which is _really_ average for me and does absolutely nothing.

Even if it's their weakest album, it's still worth a purchase / listen.

DNA is definitely worth the purchase. Some average tracks, but also some great stuff. And personally I think it is more consistent than BF2, although BF2's high points are much better than anything on DNA.

The strings throughout the album add a lot to the atmosphere though  :tup

I'd rank them:

BF1>DNA>BF2

But to sum it up, I love them all a lot.
Hard to choose weak points, because if I listen to Blackfield in the right mood, they are even better then PT for me.
Being a bit sad really adds a lot to listening to BF's music, no matter which of the 3 albums I listen to.

From Steven Wilson's Facebook Page (https://www.facebook.com/permalink.php?story_fbid=322669041086698&id=114657261887878)
Quote
"Folks, just to clarify news elsewhere of a new Blackfield album coming this year - please note that this time my involvement will be as a contributor rather than a member. I will still be mixing the album, and maybe sing on a couple of Aviv's songs (there will be other guest singers I understand), but with my complete blessing Blackfield is now under his sole curatorship, a process which really began with Welcome to My DNA."

I think it sounds interesting.
Blackfield are too good to just put out an album every third year or so, I still want SW to be a part of Blackfield, but I don't think this solution is bad either.

The only concern for me is that DNA was weaker than the first 2 (imo) and that may be down to SW's reduced involvement. I only Steven hasn't had huge input of any of them, but I fear the quality will diminish further.. time will tell.

I wonder if this is the beginning of a slow process towards SW being exclusively a solo artist...?

:( My mom won't take well to this as Blackfield has become one of her favorite bands. I'm not really interested in this project anymore, I guess. While Aviv is a good composer, SW was the main reason I listened to them. All of his songs were my favorite BF tracks. Will still check out the album... hopefully SW will tour with them when the time comes around.

Me too.  :-\ I absolutely love his solo work but he seems to be kind of pushing everything else to the side. I hope PT doesn't disband or become inactive.

The majority of Blackfield's songs have always been written by Aviv, so the songwriting won't change.

However, Steven's voice and his production abilities may be the difference. But, if he is still mixing and singing a few tracks I think it will still be great.

I have only ever listened to Blackfield for Aviv's songwriting, not for the voice of Steven Wilson or for his arrangements.

Blackfields best songs have been Aviv's for me, but I will still miss SW's touch on it.
I wonder if PT is next in line for stepping down now.

The next album is going to be a re-interpretation album where Aviv just re-writes and possibly even remixes Go to Hell for 11 straight tracks.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

I have a feeling PT is next to go. Which is a shame, because SW is not nearly as good on his own.

I have a feeling PT is next to go.

I don't see it.  Considering PT is Wilson's brainchild (plus him being the main songwriter and it being his creative vision), he isn't gonna leave the band, and I doubt the others would go on without him.  They might go on hiatus, but even that would surprise me.  I think he is just wrapped up in his multiple other projects right now, but once he gets past that, I suspect he will be all ready to get PT going on another album.
