Thought I'd put my hand up and say Blackfield are really good. Picked up Welcome to my DNA a couple of weeks ago and finally got a chance to listen to it last night. Great stuff. Next steps...?

Either of their other albums is a safe bet. You have nowhere to go but up.  :tup

There isn't really one. People's opinions on it are kind of all over the map.

I know I think it's a great album. It's just not as good as I or II.

Same.

But like I said, a couple of the songs on II are my favorite Blackfield songs, but as a whole I never felt the album worked as well as the other two.

Revisited the new album a bit, can't get over how fantastic it is.
Oxygen and Far Away especially, though the rest is obviously really great as well.

Must have listened to Oxygen about 20-25 times in the last 3 days.  :hefdaddy

Lyric-wise it's bad, music-wise it's really good.
Personally I don't care much for lyrics, so the song is not a problem for me in that sense, though on the contrary, it would never become my favorite BF-song or anything like that. :P

It's so much worse once you see it live. I couldn't stop laughing. Just ask Jackie or Nate. They'll vouch for me here.

I honestly can't believe that they decided to play it live, seeing as they have so many better songs that weren't played.

What made it even funnier is Aviv said that he wrote Go To Hell for his parents.

I don't see what's funny. In fact it's quite sad to see someone write a song to say fuck you to his parents.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

You had to have been there. He made it funny. However, you're right, it is quite sad. But then again, maybe they deserve the song. Only he knows.

The reason it comes across as funny to me is because of how childish he made it sound. Like "FUCK YOU MOM AND DAD YOU DON'T KNOW ME NOBODY KNOWS ME SHUT UP I HATE YOU"

Also Oxygen is one of the only songs I can't stand listening to on that album most of the time...

I don't get why everyone raves about that song. It's ok, but next to On The Plane it's one of the weaker tracks on the album imo.

Actually in an interview, sounds like his parents were into the drug culture and Aviv was the last thing on their minds.

Time to rank the songs on DNA. It's tough for me, considering how highly I rate this album.

1. Go To Hell (I have never understood other people's objections to these lyrics. I think they are brilliant, and I get chills everytime I hear Aviv sing them. I totally connect with the sentiment of this song.)
2. Rising of the Tide
3. Far Away
4. Dissolving With The Night
5. DNA
6. On The Plane
7. Zigota
8. Oxygen
9. Glass House
10. Waving
11. Blood

I must say the arrangements of the songs on this album are just perfect. So is the production. I feel that they really nailed their sound with this album, even if it doesn't as diverse a sound as Blackfield I.

Brilliant?  Even if you like the sentiment of the song, brilliant?  They sound like they were uttered by a pissed off teenager.  It's too bad that such good music was wasted in a song with such stupid and childish lyrics.

Yeah, calling the lyrics to Go To Hell "brilliant" is a bit of a reach, but they never took away from the song for me

I haven't listened to this album in awhile, but...

1. Waving
2. DNA
3. Far Away
4. Zigota
5. Blood
6. Go To Hell
7. Glass House
8. Oxygen (used to be my least favorite, it's grown on me)
9. Rising of the Tide
10. Dissolving with the Night
11. On The Plane

I think I'll actually listen to it today. :)

I can't rank the songs yet because for whatever reason I felt I haven't listened to the album enough.

But I agree Go To Hell IS a great song and so are the lyrics. Yes, they're straightforward and in the face (and for me "I don't care" sounds far more powerful than all the "fuck you"). But it doesn't sound pissed off at all, it's just so... purifying. It just sounds like someone who got through a lot of trouble in his life and a lot of people who tried their best to make it more difficult either of pure bad will or simply ignorance, and then you reach that point when you can show them you succeeded anyway and can give them a middle finger.

Is it refined? No, maybe not. But...

I don't care.
