Ben he's not saying that your opinion was bad, but when half the review is discussing whether the band "has a point" rather than what the album is like, it's naturally going to not sit well with a fan of it. I also find it a strange approach to a review, but one that I see a lot online, particularly in negative reviews.

Rich, that's fine for us on here because we all know a lot about Blackfield but most of our readers do not. The first paragraph is all about how some might find it strange that this collabaration exists, what's the problem with that. The only judgement I make as a result of the introductory paragraph is a positive one,
Quote
Blackfield proved that it did have a point
. I could've spent that paragraph saying that this album was a total waste of time but I didn't because I wanted to make the point that even though many would say this is not a massively important project, I feel that there's no reason it should be considered as such.

And you can say
Quote
he's not saying that your opinion was bad
but if that's the case why does the post which basically reads:
Really bad review as:
- You unfairly suggest that the band has no point (which I do not)
- The lyrics are amazing
- You need to listen again, you are clearly wrong / you clearly have not listened to the record enough

Well for a start you seem to think this album is vastly different to the first two in some way, which most of us really can't see at all, it's incredibly similar. So from that point of view, perhaps listening more is appropriate. But Quad may have meant that listening more will make you suddenly like it more, which would obviously be ridiculous.

And regarding the descriptive introduction, of course I can completely see the point of it, Blackfield are hardly a well-known band. For sure you pass a positive judgement in relation to their first two albums, it just seems strange to me to start by question the band's purpose in the first place. Surely just an introduction to who they are would be less controversial? Or am I missing the point on that one?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not attacking your review; like I said I just find the approach a little odd, and it makes the review fairly inaccessible IMO.

Fair enough, you've given reasons for your opinion Rich and that's fine. That's very different to just attacking something because you disagree with it.

I didn't say that it was musically or lyrically different from the first two records, so I'm not sure where you've got the thing about me saying it's vastly different from. I just say that the quality was not there this time because, frankly, I don't believe it was.

If I didn't question the band's purpose at the beginning then it'd just result in me being much harsher on the band about this album later on so actually it was a way of gently easing in to what I wanted to say believe it or not!  :lol

I can kinda see that, but I'm not sure it's quite worked. :lol Ah well each to their own.

I don't understand your view of Blood either, I love it! Keeps getting stuck in my head.

I'm not gonna bash the review, but who cares if the project has a point or not?  Wilson and Geffen obviously get along and like making music together; that is good enough for me.  Not everything has to have a point.  Sometimes, musicians want to get together and write music for the fun of it.  To overanalyze it IS missing the point of music.

Well, turns out I can't get free movies in other cities until after working there for 3 months so I guess I'll be wandering about London for a while.

Ha, Waving totally is the best track. Oh well, guess I'm just really not a fan of Aviv's writing style.

DNA is definitely my favorite on the new album, with Waving and Far Away close behind. It's so beautiful and depressing.

DNA's awfully good. It's certainly the song of theirs I've listened to the most since....yesterday....behind Epidemic anyway.

Weird, I had a different number for you!

Anyway me, Harry and Ian are meeting at Oxford Circus at 5 and then heading to Shepherd's Bush from there; probably get a couple of beers from an offie and also some food of some kind, to eat and drink in the queue. Feel free to join us at any stage of the process!

Do you have my number from back at the Opeth gig (it hasn't changed) or shall I text you so you have it?
