I said yes.  I was so disappointed with their last album that I felt they had really hit the bottom.  I think adversity can often breed inspiration. I'm hoping for something mind-blowing!

You though SCSL was worse than SC?

Absolutely.  At least SC had ITPOE1.  I can't say I 'love' that song, but it's ok and I listen to it once in a while.  There's not one song on BCSL that I can listen to without getting bored, and don't get me started on the lyrics.

Goddamn this man speaks so much truth

I'm hoping for a Falling Into Infinity meets Scenes From A Memory type album. If that happens, then YES, it will be their best in years IMO!

I definitely doubt, that it will be their best in years.

With JP taking over control completely now, the lyrics will probably be even worse than on BC&SL, which I think is one of the reasons, why neither BC&SL nor SC were really good albums despite the obvious lack of inspiration. The break MP wanted was imo the perfect way to re-ignite Dream Theater, to make them hungry again.
Instead of that the only guy with some kind of a kick-ass attitude is gone and 3 technical masters are left, who can jerk off in hyperspeed while soloing to every possible and impossible beat...but to me there is a lack of songwriting-ability and a desastrous dictator of cheesy lyrics in the remaining band....I hope I'm wrong, but I'm pretty sure, that DT11 will be the worst DT record...

The poll should read Will The New Dream Theater Album Be Their Best In Years? not > Will The New Dream Theater Album Be There Best In Years?

Not that I care.  :metal

Last 3 albums have been pretty lackluster. Nowhere to go but up.

I don't know if it will be their best, but it will definitely be there.

I am overly confident this will be their best in years AND possibly be their best ever.

Look at other album in the past that were released after a major band member was replaced that could have failed miserably but shot the band into super stardom.

Back in Black AC/DC after replacing Bon Scott with Brian Johnson.

5150 Van Halen after replacing lee Roth with Sammy Hager.

Even though these guys were voacalists and not drummers, I think the roll of replacing a drummer in DT is on par with replacing a vocalist in other bands.

These two examples breathed fresh ideas, new music, a new outlook and renewed excitiment that also flowed into writing arguably the best album from each of these bands.

DT 2011 will be effin HUGE.

There is a big chance that it might their best in a long time. Look at what they did with I&W, ACOS and SFAM! But then again, the new drummer might not be so good and the album could be awful. But I hope for the best and I guess the former scenario is more possible than the latter.

technically they didn't gain a new member for AMLOR... :neverusethis:
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

They didn't? :o

I thought Tony Levin is a better bass player compared to Roger Waters. Too bad he didn't stay for the tour - it would have been awesome!
(not that Guy Pratt is bad, but... :p)

Hey guys this is my first post here :rollin. I think alot of it will depend on who the new guy is. I only hope they do something different from the last 2 albums. I liked BC&SL but it wasn't a whole lot different from SC which I liked better.

I really hope so. I still put BL&SL as their best since SFAM and yes I am putting it over 6DoIT which I find less interesting than most people do. I'm hoping they channel a bit more into the shorter song concept like in Awake and FII.

Some more shorter songs would be nice if they sounded more like these two albums. However, if they are going to continue with their current sound, I would prefer more epics (if you look at the past few albums, all the best songs have been the epics (ITNOG, 8VM, ITPOE, TCOT, ANTR). I like all their albums, so I'm not fussed with what they come up with.

I'd really rather have 10 great short songs, rather than 4 great epics.

I'd just get board with a 4-5 track CD really fast. Especially if they're like a lot of the modern epics with pointless instrumental sections.

I wouldn't mind a balanced album like 8VM that has a couple of epics and a bunch of other songs. I'd say that least one epic is needed, just to hear the new drummer go crazy!

6 songs in BCASL felt really fast.

It would be cool, if they did a 2 disc album. One as an epic / concept and another with shorter/independent songs.

I completely agree with you. A lot of the instrumental parts in BC&SL dragged on too long and if they just cut those parts the song would be a whole lot better. Theres very few other songs that I feel that way but bam suddenly this album its wayyy too much.

I don't know about best in years but would be easy top BC&SL. I doubt it could top SC though its my #3 DT album behind I&W and 6 Degrees.

The Count of Tuscany... is like a TOP 10-20 song from them... It's better and better each fucking time... It just screams Italy, seriously... Does anybody else notice it? Seriously, magnificient atmosphere and note selection in intro and outro solos and the atmospheric part in the middle. It's just heart-breakingly beautiful and inspiring, they did a wonderful job on that one. I think they can top both BCSL and SC, and even 8VM and ToT.
