Sigur Ros - Suggestions please
« on: January 07, 2011, 08:59:06 AM »
On my drive through Iceland my rental car only had a CD player (no AUX plug, which I had hoped for), so I bought myself a Sigur Ros album ("Hvarf/Heim"), and it totally fit the mood of driving through that eternal dusk/dawn of the Icelandic winter.
So, what other album of theirs would you suggest?

Also, has anybody watched their documentary? Is it any good?

(), Takk... and Ágætis Byrjun are all incredible.  You can't go wrong with any of them, but I'll say that given that it is winter right now, ( ) is probably the most fitting for the current type of weather (if you are looking for more driving music).

Ágætis Byrjun is my favorite, Takk... is probably the best place to start, ( ) is the general favorite on the forum and the one most people will tell you to go after. Make your pick. Or even better, get them all.

If we're going by seasons, get ( ) now, Takk... when spring comes around, and Ágætis Byrjun in summer.

Seriously now: You can't go wrong with either of them, they're all phenomenal.
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

Must have listened to it about 25-30 times now, and it gets better for each listen.
Haven't really moved on to the rest yet (i really love this, so wanna go slowly), but i gave ( ) a listen the other night, and i can see it becoming my favorite.  :tup

I'll definitely be following this thread because Sigur Rós is a band that I'm long overdue to check out.

What the others said. Lay off on their newest Með suð í eyrum við spilum endalaust though. It's all really great music but not the real Sigur Rós for me. I'd just go chronologically, even though ( ) is their best. Just skip their first album.

In case you are talking of "Heima": absolutely stunning combination of music, people and landscape. One of the best DVDs I own.

( ).
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

( ) is such a fantastic album, it's blowing my mind atm.
Not many plays yet, but it's growing and might easily become my favorite SR-album.
The second half especially is amazing, untitled 7 and 8 especially, even though the first half is great too.  :tup

In my opinion the best ways of getting into them are these:

a) seeing 'Heima', the documentary.
b) seeing them live.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

That DVD changed my whole perception on music DVD's. It's so much more than just a band playing songs, it's so much more than video supporting audio. It makes for a totally new product. And an incredibly great one.

Other than that, I seem to be the only one really seeing Med Sud... as a great place to start. Open, uplifting, not too difficult to get into. A great album.
Other than that, you should really hear ( ), that really is one of the greatest albums ever. But you should actually buy it, the whole concept behind it makes it 10 times more powerful. Every time I tell students of mine about the lack of an album title, the lack of song titles and the lack of lyrics, just to make the music more powerful, they are instantly interested to hear it. Every time.

The thing about Ára bátur is... It's this thing Sigur Rós had always wanted to do... Record a song using a full orchestra in Abbey Road, and well, they did, but it just seems a little forced to me. It's a very nice song, but for some reason it lacks some emotion that is omnipresent in AB and ( ).
