Who will coach Spain now? The assistant coach?

Looks like Fernando Hierro will coach them.

In other news, after the farce that will happen in Qatar, the World Cup 2026 will be held in North America!

USA, Canada and Mexico won a joint bid. On one hand it's nice to see more countries collaborating together, but seeing, say, a match in Toronto and another one in Mexico city will feel a bit divisive. It's nice to have a coherent "theme" for the tournament, helped by the fact that after all they happen in a single country (South Korea / Japan was the exception of course).

Spain will surely be in complete disarray now. If they get out of the group, it'll be a miracle.

Supporting Croatia for sure but I can only hope for eight-final at best, they always fuck it up after group stage.
I'd like to see Argentina win (if Croatia doesn't and they won't :P ), I think Messi deserves it. Also, French squad looks great, they are my other favorites.
BTW is anyone interested in fantasy? If yes, join here and I'll make our private league.

If you want some spoilers, here's how the round of 16 might look like, the biggest uncertainty of course is who will win group B out of Portugal and Spain (they are paired, each team plays against the winner of the one immediately below) :

Uruguay
Portugal

France
Croatia

Brazil
Sweden

England
Senegal

=====================

Spain
Russia

Argentina
Denmark

Germany
Serbia

Colombia
Belgium

Possible quarter finals:

Portugal/Spain vs France

Brazil vs England

===========

Spain/Portugal vs Argentina

Gerrmany vs Colombia/Belgium

Semi finals:

Portugal / Spain / France VERSUS Brazil

Spain / Portugal / Argentina VERSUS Germany

Possible finals:

Spain (or Portugal) vs Germany

Argentina vs Brazil

Argentina vs Spain (o Portugal)

Okay USA, so you'd like to build a wall to keep the mexicans out, but you have no problem hosting a world-cup with them?

That's a pretty skewed perception of the term 'miracle'? I mean, it definitely hurts them, but I don't think Morocco and Iran are teams they have no chance of beating.

Also the idea of letting the whole of North America host it seems stupid. Does that mean all 3 (Canada, US, Mexico) get first seed spots in the tournament?? We have had tournaments with 2 average first seed spots, but 3 (one of which, Canada, is waaay below average) seems absolutely ridiculous.

Wow! Biggest tournament in world football's just started and no talk here during the game?

Russia didn't suck tonight, that's for sure...OK, Saudi Arabia aren't exactly high-calibre opposition, but you've still got to do the job on the night.

Not commenting on the current World Cup, because, well... yawn. But I will say here and now I really do not want the PNW hosting a game in 2024, though I feel this possibility is small. But it would be interesting to see what soccer officials and the local government would do to hide the massive drug-induced vagrant population here from the media.

Not sure most Americans want to host the World Cup, with out without our neighbors to the north and south. I bet most US sports fans aren't even aware the 2024 World Cup will be held here.

Yeah, especially when it's the 2026 World Cup

I'm 98.3 percent sure that CenturyLink Field will be hosting at least one match.

I've just realised it's a similar situation to Brazil. They hosted the World Cup in 2014 followed by the Rio Olympics of 2016. USA will co-host the 2026 World Cup before LA hosts the 2028 Olympics.

Tonight Portugal vs Spain. Go Ronaldo Go  :metal

And the 2024 WC would be more like "USA ft.", since 60 of the 80 matches will be played in the USA, and only a handful in Canada and Mexico.

Maybe if they didn't insist on pushing the number of teams to 48, USA could have hosted all the matches.

Still, it won't suck as much as in Qatar. That is gonna be the worst WC ever.

Egypt - Uruguay is pretty exciting so far, Egypt are playing better than I expected without Salah on the field

But I'm really just looking forward to Spain - Portugal tonight

EDIT: Wondering, does anyone know why the crowd is constantly whistling as soon as Uruguay takes over possession? I know there's a dislike for Suarez, but does the entire squad have a bad rap because of him now?

Geez, 2 days without coming here and a lot has happened.

Lopetegui has been sacked. There, problem solved  ;D

(But seriously - was it necessary? people announce they leave the national team after a World Cup all the time, maybe there was some behind-the-scenes stuff that displeased the federation and they booted him)
I talked about this with my friends. Lopetegui had agreed to extend his contract with Spain about a month ago and now this happens? I can see why they sacked him. How can you trust a guy like that? It's also a message to Madrid that they can't be more important than the national team.

casual undergods
I always like how the whole world roots for underdogs.

I also find it funny how England is pretty consistently rubbish, but never bad enough to be an underdog.

You guys have good players but the national team coaching choices have been pretty bad for a while. I feel like the team has been trying to play premier league football at an international level and that doesn't translate too well.

Spain (or Portugal) vs Germany

Argentina vs Brazil

Argentina vs Spain (o Portugal)

Thanks for the support but I highly doubt it. I don't trust our midfield.

That's interesting and to be honest I have no idea. Maybe it is because of Suarez and what happened at the last world cup.

I think because of Suarez and I read somewhere that there are much more fans from Egypt than from Uruguay in the stadium (no wonder concerning the distances).

I have never laughed for such a long period of time straight about a football game/moment before that 94th minute of Iran - Morocco, that must be one of the most hilarious goals ever, given the stakes of the game, the minute of the game, and the fact that this was a substitute player.

I like the way Spain plays, and would love to see Messi and Argentina do well. But I think this is Germany's cup. They are a machine

Just watched a video. I can't conclusively say whether it was a penalty or not. There is contact and even if Cristiano is looking for Nacho's leg, Nacho was late to that play.

As a Spaniard, I thought the penalty call was fair. I think Spain were in control of pretty much the whole game (and wow, that 1-1!), but that late first half goal may have lost enough momentum to get back into the game.

Very entertaining first half! Spain's goal was great too. On the second goal Spain's goalkeeper had a Kariusism  ;D

Portugal is trying to shut them down at midfield. Spain needs to play their passing game.

As a soccer fan, a great game so far. What makes the World Cup so great.

I rewatched the Ronaldo penalty. Tough call, but in hindsight I can see why they called the penalty.

Agree on the brain fart by De Gea.

Hope the second half is as good.
