Yeah there's a lot of room for bad puns with his name. I'm not sure how you pronounce it though, my dad thought you pronounced it "Blint" or something like that, but you just know the commentators will say "Blind" either way.  :P

Well, it's gonna be that Oscar situation all over again when he played for Chelsea, I guess. I dunno if you guys had it on Sky Sports, but we Russians had a lot of commentators trying to be funny and making puns about him getting or not getting the Academy Award for his actions.

Of course, the worst case for Russians was about Samir Nasri, because if you pronounce Nasri with emphasis on the last syllable, it turns into a verb "to shit" in imperative mood, and there were a lot of those subtle and obviously not amusing at all jokes until all the commentators were apparently forced to put an emphasis on the first syllable instead.

Yeah it is basically pronounced "Blint", and UK commentators are surprisingly good at pronouncing names the way they are supposed to. So from a commentary perspective, I think it'll be fine.

Puns in the press are an absolute guarantee though.

Watched Germany-Argentina friendly yesterday. Wtf, at some point it was 4:0 for Argentina. Granted, it was a friendly so they weren't giving it all, and the team had three retirements since the WC, but dang. Ended up being 4:2 in the end.

What happened was a healthy Di Maria, a healthy Agüero and a new coach who likes playing offense. Also no pressure.

Portugal seems to be in deep trouble, they lost against Albania, wtf.
And Gibraltar, I mean, good for them that they want to play too, but their games will continue to be a shit show.

This thread needs some reviving and what a better topic to do so than Thierry Henry announcing his retirement. He's one of the best players I've had the pleasure to watch and I'm pretty sure that no matter what team you're a fan of you have enjoyed his game.

Here's a video with some awesome goals

He played for the Red Bulls, right? I saw him play just a few weeks ago, against the Revolution.

For a bit, yeah. He was most famous as an Arsenal player, then went to Barcelona for a short while before heading over to the States to play for the Red Bulls.

I've only really been getting into football since this year's World Cup, so I haven't seen much of Thierry Henry (or in that regard, of any other player) so far. That video was great though, and I know he's a fantastic player. Sad to see him announce his retirement, but you've got to stop sometime!

As a Spurs fan, Henry was the bane of my existence, but he was one of the best. Shame to see him retire.

Long time since last post!

Watched the Bayern Munich vs BvB Dortmund game today, German cup semifinals.
Incredible game, my heart was racing during the penalties (I'm rooting for Dortmund). And then Bayern doesn't hit a single time!!

I really want to get into Premier League, but I don't know what team I want to cheer for. Helpz!

It kinda depends on what you like about the game. First of all, does it have to be one of the top teams contending for titles or can it be like a smaller team? If you like defensive and tactical games, Chelsea are pretty strong, if you like teams that play a fun attacking football, Liverpool or Arsenal might be more up your alley. If you want a smaller team that plays attacking football you also have teams like Southampton or Swansea that are essentially Liverpool/Arsenal light. Everton is another exciting team if you're looking for a good team that is kind of the underdog, a team that can finish top7, same goes for Tottenham. Or maybe Manchester United if you're interested in a team that just a few years ago was the best and biggest team in the world, had a really tough last season and are now looking to get back on top.

Wow what a late response :lol

I've been keeping track of it this year. I don't get to watch the games much because I'm in the USA, and I think they show games on one station.

Teams that I would consider getting into:

Arsenal
Southampton
Everton
Manchester United
Aston Villa (Why, I don't know :lol)

Teams I don't really care for:

Well. Chelsea :lol

I used to be the same, but then I discovered SopCast and AceStream, and the beautiful site https://www.livefootballol.com/ :D
I watched the Bayern-Dortmund game in pristine quality on my laptop.

So it looks like it's going to be Wolfsburg vs. Dortmund in the German Cup Final? Sorry Rumborak, but I'm rooting for Wolfsburg ;) I love the way Dortmund fought their way back into the Bundesliga mid-table though. I remember when I was in Berlin in January and February; they weren't looking well back then, IIRC.

Anyone else following the Women's World Cup?

I'm watching Norway - Thailand and it's really good stuff, Norway especially play really well (though Thailand in their first ever WWC aren't presenting much of a challenge).

Yeah I'll be following England of course.

I've never really watched much Women's Football before, so I'm interested to know whether teams like Germany and Brazil play in a similar manner to their male counterparts.

Yeah even moreso than the men's World Cup I can see there being a vast gap between the experienced teams and the newer ones.

Props to FC Barcelona for their treble, winning the Champions League, La Liga, and the Copa del Rey all in the span of a month. It's absolutely incredible.

Also-- did anyone else see the USA v Netherlands friendly on Friday? The USA were incredible with their comeback win!

That's because the Netherlands were playing increddibly naive. 3-1 lead and you give it away like that? Shamefull. We did get a severe lesson in effective counter play, though. Kudos for the USA team on that score. But the defending was dreadful.

I would if the time difference was better. Tonight Sweden is playing their first game at 10 PM, and their two other games will be played at 2 AM.

Yeah the latest slot is a bit late for us in the UK, but the earlier ones work out fine. Glad to see that the BBC is broadcasting every match, at least online. Hopefully that also means being able to catch up on all the highlights/goals (of which it looks like there could be many!).

Was talking about it with a colleague today, and we agreed that, although men's football is understandably faster and more powerful, women's ends up being pretty much as enjoyable to watch. The only real difference between the men's and women's world cups is that one is played by whiny little bitches and the other is played by professional sportswomen.

In general I am very pleasantly surprised at the level of soccer I've seen so far. I think the days where the Women's World Cup was mostly just as exercise in equality are coming to an end.

Yeah it´s growing very fast. Too bad the Dutch women´s competition is managed so amateurishly. I remember when I worked at Feyenoord Football club a couple of years, there was a real 50´s mentality about the whole woman football thing. The whole idea of setting up a professional woman´s team was met with real hostility back then. While the talent was all around every year on the talent days. Such a shame.

Saw some highlights of the game this morning, looks like it was a really good match. Same with Netherlands - NZ. I haven't caught any highlights of Sweden - Nigeria yet, but that looks like a very closely fought game, ending at 3-3!

Rapinoe stood out yesterday, for sure. In fact, in the first half I was thinking "this way the US isn't going anywhere in the World Cup". In the second half they picked up, looked a lot better.
