What a disgraceful Argentinian team today. I saw messi coming down on the first line to receive the ball from the defenders because there was no midfield whatsoever. We asked for Pavon and Dybala, they came in, the team still sucked. This just shows that the problem is deeper: The team doesn't know what style suits them, and Sampaoli is improvising.

Let's see how Colombia fares on sunday with Poland.

Totally unrelated to the World Cup, I just picked up tickets to a Mexican league friendly up in Sacramento between Morelia and Tiujana (my team, kinda hard to work with Mexicans for 30 years and not get neck deep in their sport). Should be quite an experience.

Why people talk of team that lost like they handed it to Croatia by scoring three own goals? Even first goal Caballero fucked up wasn't that easy to score. Also, in studio on BBC someone (maybe even Fabregas) said better keeper would stop Modrić's goal, not giving him or any other player any credit. Yes, Argentina was really bad but so they were against Iceland and they still dominated despite tge score.
BTW I was on main square in Zagreb last night during the match, big screen was there, it was really fun

Did Karius became general trainer of all the goalkeepers of the World Cup or something?

Anyway, I hoped for some lulz, and teh lulz arrived.

Karius should sue them all for plagiarism.

DAMN! I was already savoring another lulz, made sweeter by Neymar being outed worldwide as a cheater, and then Brazil scores.

And then Neymar himself adds a second.

Two things I don't like about football: 1, cheating and 2, how a team can play abysmally and not deserve to win, but somehow they do.

I think Brazil didn't play well, but they completely outplayed Costa Rica and had 22 shots on goal, whereas CR had only 3. I'm not sure if Brazil really didn't deserve the win.

It should be quite obvious to anyone that followed the game that Brazil deserved the win more than Costa Rica. Neither team really impressed me though, but that's pretty much become the recurring theme of the 2018 World Cup by now.

Well deserved win for Nigeria, they pretty much owned the second half. Still feel bad for Iceland.

Well that's blown Group D wide open, and makes Nigeria vs Argentina an incredibly tantalising clash now. Winner of that qualifies, but if they draw and Iceland beat Croatia, it'll come down to goal difference between Nigeria and Iceland.

Is goal difference next after points? I had the impression it was results between the teams before goal difference, but that might well be either out of date or in fact entirely different competition!

If I were Croatia I'd totally lose on purpose against Iceland and watch three teams fight to the death for one slot. Or, for the right to be defeated by France in the round of 16.

You really think France would beat Croatia in the last 16? They barely got past Australia.

Go Sweden but yea seems like Germany has the game so far. Luckily our defense seems to be on alert. Cautiously optimistic so far.  :D

Boah, I'm too old for this kind of game. That was brutal, but that freekick was a thing of beauty.

Glad Germany won in the end, but at the same time kinda sad for Sweden. Now if they defeat Mexico and Germany beats South Korea you have three teams with six points.

France and Croatia are gonna win their respective groups and therefore they won't meet. The winner of France's group will meet the second of Croatia's group and the other way around.

And Germany.... well, I see they didn't lose the habit of entering Russia as favorites, and then having a hell of a hard time  :D

11 goals in the two games so far today. England very emphatic, but conceding the Panama goal means they are level with Belgium on points, goal difference, goals scored and goals conceded. They top the group on Fair Play rankings, having one fewer yellow card than Belgium.

That means if England and Belgium draw, and England get one more yellow card than Belgium, lots will need to be drawn to determine who finishes top of the group.

Yeah, they really shouldn't have taken that goal. Way to screw up even if you win (up until that point) 6-0

Tonight Polonia vs Columbia, let's see if one gets surprisingly eliminated!

So, today we begin to get serious, group A and B will have their winners and their eliminated teams.

Here's an updated prediction of how the round of 16 might shape up:

Uruguay (maybe Russia)
Portugal

France
Argentina (or Nigeria or Iceland)

-----------

Brazil
Germany

England (maybe Belgium)
Senegal (or Japan or Colombia)

====================

Spain
Russia (maybe Uruguay)

Croatia
Denmark

-----------

Mexico
Switzerland

Colombia (or Japan or Senegal)
Belgium (maybe England)

Urugay and Russia play before Portugal and Spain, so they can't know which is better, to arrive first or second.

Spain is most likely to win their group, they face an eliminated Morocco while Iran will fight to the last breath against Portugal.

Argentina and Germany are not doomed, but they won't be able to win their groups (unless Germany trashes South Korea and Mexico loses 1-0 against Sweden).

England vs Belgium is a toss, and so the situation of Colombia's group.

Basically thanks to the missteps of Argentina and Germany, Spain has the road to the final relatively unchallenged if they win their group. Maybe England should try and doge a bullet and lose on purpouse against Belgium to end up in the relatively lesser half of the round of 16.

England only top the group on yellow cards. If we draw and get one yellow more than Belgium, the group winner will be decided on a coin toss.

Well, I mainly meant that it's hard to be sure of what will happen, I think that a draw or a victory for either team are all equally likely outcomes. Just like the Japan / Senegal / Colombia combination, I'm very curious to see what will happen.

Group F is still entirely open, everybody can be in or out. If South Korea somehow best Germany by more than 2 points and Sweden beats Mexico, it would be Sweden and South Korea getting through. That said, Mexico/Germany is probably the most likely combo.
