Top 10's of 2010 that ARE NOT DTF's
« on: January 05, 2011, 01:20:38 PM »
In this thread post links to top albums/bands of 2010 that have been published by musicians, music writers, and bloggers who focus on music.  A title for each link would be nice as well.  Just as an example I'm posting two I found, and by no means is this an endorsement for these people - they were just two I found relatively quickly.

the taste of the people who vote in the Sound Opinions poll every year is pretty close to p4k. However, I found 8 of my top 55 on that list, which is probably a record high for me. So I kind of wondered if either my taste is getting worse, or the voter's (including myself) is getting better.

The hosts of Sound Opinions have a pretty massive hard-on for anything 'indie,' so it's not surprise that a majority of their forum goers do as well.

Note: I have no problems with indie music, but branch the fuck out people.

Blind Guardian, High On Fire, Agalloch, Cradle of Filth (:neverusethis:), Exodus, James Labrie.

None of them suck, but I guess it depends on what you're looking for.

EDIT: Added...

Honestly, I've noticed that people who have this opinion (not you specifically, just in general) about people who like indie music generally need to branch out themselves. Around here it isn't uncommon to see someone scoff about hipsters or "hipster music" yet have a favorite albums/bands list saturated with prog metal.

Gonna listen to that Agalloch later.

Good show, this.

I'm probably one of the prime offenders of being a massive indie fan on this forum, but to say I need to branch out is a pretty ignorant.

That's pretty true, but I can't stand most prog metal myself.

A few of the other forums I troll post at are pretty much dominated by indie fans, with a smattering of kvlt metal fans. Now, my tastes aren't really that varied, but at least I change it up a bit, keep things interesting. But man, reading the 'What Are You Listening To?' threads is just a constant, nonstop barrage of indie music from the same folks.

I just find it... odd, because I can get tired of genres pretty quickly if I over-listen to something.

Yeah, I still have a lot of stuff to listen to from this year too.

The only thing I can't stand about indie is what's supposed to be such an egalitarian "do-it-yourself" genre somehow turns into one of the most snobbish and exclusive music "cliques" I've seen.

Yeah, I still have a lot of stuff to listen to from this year too.

Quote
A few of the other forums I troll post at are pretty much dominated by indie fans

The only thing I can't stand about indie is what's supposed to be such an egalitarian "do-it-yourself" genre somehow turns into one of the most snobbish and exclusive music "cliques" I've seen.
Every once in a while, when I'm really bored, I'll make poor life choices and read the metal forums at Amazon.

What a bunch of elitist assholes there.

Metal fans are absolutely the worst. I'll give you that. Especially the black/death guys. Ugh.

I think that is common also among progressive fans, modern pop fans, rap fans, classic rock fans, all kinds of metal fans, you-name-it.

My point... are many Indie fans close-minded, snobbish, and exclusive?  Yes.  But no more than any other genre.

In a general sense:

yeah pretty much every genre has a lot of conservative if not narrow-minded music listeners whose taste are pretty predictable. But at the same time, there are people who listen to a large amount of music/mix with fans of, in every genre, who also are open to listening and enjoying music from every other genre as well.

It's pretty much the same with every genre of music. There's good stuff in every genre, and there's garbage in every genre.

I'm not sure if any certain genre's fan bases are more open-minded than others. The big issue with College Rock is, it seems to be the most visible kind of music, at least in Rock, really since Hair Metal kind of died.

Pretty much
Rolling Stone, MTV, and now Pitchfork appear to the mainstream as the most important sources for Rock music. Which arguably has not been a healthy thing for Rock music, ever since it's been the case.

Yeah, I like to consider myself a generalist, rather than a specialist. I just kinda listen to either the best or, at least, most popular of various genres. Some genre fanatics always give me crap for not knowing that some band from _____ is a way better _____ genre band than the relatively mainstream one I know and like, but who cares?

Where are they?  I see the DTF members, but I didn't see others, so I thought it would be nice to compile them.

Deftones and The Dillinger Escape Plan owned this year, as far as metal goes.

Diamond Eyes is a masterpiece.

I'll definitely be checking it out. I've never been big on Deftones in the past, but I liked White Pony a lot. :tup

not a top 10, but a top 50 that I like:

https://sputnikmusic.com/bestof2010

diverse, eclectic, tons of good albums.

No one on this board will take it seriously because Kanye is on it though, even though his album this year was awesome

Not even close. First place is a tie between "jazz/classic prog only, everything else is stupid crap for the masses" and "I'm so fucking openminded because I listen to Lady Gaga and she's so talented and unique man (despite being a modern clone of Madonna), while your shit progmetal is so repetitive because they don't redefine 10 genres with each album". Metal fans are pretty diverse, from really cool people to total assholes. The problem is the latter tend to be more visible.

Looks like they copy-pasted Pitchfork's godawful list.

Looks like they copy-pasted Pitchfork's godawful list.
The hosts of Sound Opinions have a pretty massive hard-on for anything 'indie,' so it's not surprise that a majority of their forum goers do as well.

Note: I have no problems with indie music, but branch the fuck out people.

Oh, look at this. People who have no idea what the hell they're talking about. Lovely :lol

Note: I have no problems with indie music, but branch the fuck out people.

Honestly, I've noticed that people who have this opinion (not you specifically, just in general) about people who like indie music generally need to branch out themselves. Around here it isn't uncommon to see someone scoff about hipsters or "hipster music" yet have a favorite albums/bands list saturated with prog metal.

And suddenly, common sense appears!

Ask those who consider her the most talented and amazing thing on earth and at the same time claim progmetal sucks because it's not diverse enough or some similar bullshit and create an ideology of ancient Greek proportions.
