Eh, 8VM is full of great songs.

But FII could potentially be a great album, putting back in a lot of the "missing" tracks.

If you remove all of the fluff from 8vm, you have 2 songs.
You'd better say it's Octavarium and These Walls.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. TROAE is. Panic Attack makes You not Me look like a song that is really good.

I love panic attack, in fact, it's one of my favorite songs on 8V....it's so aggressive and driving. I also think the lyrics on panic attack really accurately describe what it is like to be going through a panic attack.

If you remove all of the fluff from FII, you have a great solid album.

If you remove all of the fluff from 8vm, you have 2 songs.

I can't see how any song on FII is "fluff"....is it because some of them aren't over-the-top, and the lack of odd-time signatures? They are all very solid songs, imo, and very enjoyable. 8VM as well, but I prefer FII.

TROAE and These Walls are two of the 3 songs I'd leave. Both are simple, lack odd time signatures (for the most part) and aren't over the top.

Plus I picked FII as better....NONE of those songs are over the top.

The title track is really the only song from OV that I listen to with any regularity anymore (although I still like both "I Walk Beside You" and "The Root of All Evil" enough to call myself fans of them), while I still dig most of FII pretty often (for when I listen to DT), so FII wins this easily for me.

When I first saw the thread title my thought was "duh. Octavarium"

Octavarium was the first DT album I ever listened to. Ever possessed. Ever legitimately owned.

Then I started thinking, FII is awesome. I may not really like Burning My Soul (version on the album), or It's cut out instrumental section (I refuse to acknowledge Hells Kitchen as a stand alone song)... (even though i dont mind Burning My Soul '96)... and I have some issues with You Not Me and Take Away My Pain (again, the album version)... But I LOVE Peruvian Skies (The song that made me say "hey, I am going to look deeper into this band"), I love ToT and Lines, and New millenium. So it was a very close choice for me. On 8vrm, I used to LOVE it front to back. Now These Walls, 8vrm, and sometimes Sacrificed Sons get listened to, but thats it.

Which to chooose?
hmmm.

.

Octavarium

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I really don't get how 8VM is setter as an album it has the worst track placements ever:
TROAE: "oh yeah this song is badass omg whats next?"
*TALW starts*
"WTF is this shit?" Boner=gone.

Then you have PA wich feels streched, Then the worst song on the album, Then anotare long for the sake of being long song and Then another long intro... What were they thinking?

Also FII worst songs are more enjoyable than 8VMs, You Not Me is catchy and Burning My Soul well I like it but i know it sucks.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

Ummm....Both are great albums in overall scale, but when ranked against other DT albums, they go to the bottom of list for me. I'm gonna dedicate points out of 5, then decide!

Octavarium:
The root of all evil (4/5)
The answer lies within (2/5)
These walls (3/5)
I walk beside you (1/5)
Panic attack (3/5)
Never enough (4/5)
Sacrificed sons (4/5)
Octavarium (5/5)

total pts: 8*5=40  - scored pts: 26 - % = 26/40 = %65

Falling into infinity:
New millenium (3/5)
You not me (2/5)
Peruvian skies (4/5)
Hollow years (1/5)
Burning my soul (2/5)
Hell's kitchen (5/5)
Lines in the sand (5/5)
Take away my pain (3/5)
Just let me breathe (4/5)
Anna Lee (2/5)
Trial of tears (4/5)

total pts: 11*5 = 55 - scored pts: 35 - %: 36/55 = %63

So I vote Octavarium.

I have to go with FII. Even though it has a couple of songs like "You not Me" or "Burning my soul" that are really not good, I think the rest of the album is pretty good, specially Lines in the Sand and Hell's Kitchen (by far one of my favorite songs).
Octavarium the song is amazing as well but to be honest that is the only song I really like from that album. The main problem that I have with this album is the way it sounds. I don't have anything against the lyrics, the riffs, the instrumentals and such but the sound itself. And not from a technical point of view either.
When Ginobili gets hot, I get hot in my pants.

Octavarium. I'd rank it 5th or 6th while Falling into Infinity is my 2nd least favorite DT album (after SC). The weakest moments on 8V aren't as bad as some of the worst stuff on FII.

Don't really like any of the 2 that much, i kinda agree with Adami about the whole removing-thing.
So i have to say Falling Into Infinity, overall i prefer the sound the band had then, and the "phase" they were in while making it.
8VM has a few decent/good songs, but overall it's far far worse.

Octavarium.  It is the last album DT has put out that feels like a cohesive well thought out piece of art.  I think its one of their best flowing albums.  I never skip songs on it.  FII has some of the worst DT music mixed in with some really great DT music.  But I still hold that the song Octavarium is the greatest song ever written for me, so that carries a lot of weight.

If anyone in this thread judge him; heyy James WTF? about you in Awake In Japan? Then I will say; WTF about you silly?

Hm.

If I'm being objective, 8v is a more well thought out and better crafted album.

That being said, I personally prefer FII.

FII has the most number of DT songs that absolutely suck and are horrendous, such as:

Your Not Me
Burning My Soul
Peruvian Skies
Anna Lee

Octavarium, by comparison, has:

Panic Attack
Never Enough
I Walk Beside You

Really tough choice for me, but I have to side with Octavarium simply because what's left is phenomenal.
And now I've only habits left
to break

In my opinion, out of the 7 songs you stated, I only hate one (You Not Me), and I love most of the others.

I always refer to FII Demos as the real "FII". But yet, as much as I love FII Demos, 8VM takes it any day of the week, 8VM is probably one of my high-top DT albums.

Pretty close for me. Both albums are pretty low on my DT Fav Album list but Octavarium I feel is a stronger album over all. However almost all my favorite songs from FII are > my favorite songs from Octavarium.
