Falling into Infinity vs. Octavarium
« on: January 04, 2011, 05:08:43 PM »
Which do you guys prefer?

I started this thread because I like comparison threads, and I think the comparison makes sense. They're both probably the least... I don't know, wacky Dream Theater albums?

If you disagree with my logic, then:

I like both, but Octavarium wins by a large margin.

Falling Into Infinity
 :omg: - Trial of Tears
Great - New Millennium, Hollow Years, Lines in the Sand
Good - Hell's Kitchen, Anna Lee
Meh - Peruvian Skies, Take Away My Pain
Bad - You Not Me, Burning My Soul, Just Let Me Breathe

Octavarium
 :omg: - Octavarium
Great - These Walls
Good - The Answer Lies Within, Sacrificed Sons
Meh - The Root of All Evil, I Walk Beside You, Panic Attack
Bad - Never Enough

Really close but I'm gonna have to go with FII.

Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Wow, 50%/50%.

Imo FII has more songs that are great. Octavarium is mostly just concentrated in the title song and Root of All Evil, the rest is pretty much filler to me.

The drum sound was also so much more awesome and refined on FII, with that snappy ACOS-style snare and the octobarns and stuff. The overall mix had this open, airy quality that I miss in the newer ones, especially after Octavarium, and the lyrics, even in the lesser songs, are pretty memorable. Octavarium lyrics just... say stuff directly.

Falling Into Infinity wins by a sliver. Being my 2nd favorite with Octave being in 3rd.

FII by MILES.
I imagined the story to go more like this.

I was sitting a traffic light blaring Space Dye Vest and next to me in another car was Kevin Moore. And I'll never be open again.

If they had kept the demo songs in FII (Raise the Knife, the orignial You Or Me) then I would pick FII, but 8V wins in this case.

FII by a huge margin.

It was close, but I went with 8VM... although FII has some GREAT songs/moments ("New Millennium", "Hollow Years", "Hell's Kitchen", "Lines In The Sand", "Anna Lee", "Trial Of Tears"), 8VM has the titular epic, and equally great songs ("Sacrificed Sons", "I Walk Beside You", "The Root Of All Evil").

everytime i play 8VRM album, i listen to track 1.. and then skip to the last track and fast forward to "someone like him" until the epic finish.

when i play FII, i will skip You Not Me and Anna Lee.

so, FII wins.

I can't belive someone would skip it, it's a beautiful song. If you don't like Anna Lee you don't have a heart.

it's not like that i hate it.

it's just what the lyric tells about. so sad and mean.
and you can't abandon the lyric since there is nothing special with the music arrangement.
hearing it will destroy my mood.

so i will just listen to it for just a very relax time or holidays.

I heard that Anna Lee is actually a pun on the story (which is about child molestation).

Not even close - FII is much more enjoyable to me.  I still listen to it.  I haven't listened to Octavarium since right after it came out.

I don't think I've ever really compared the two before. I find it surprising how close I consider them in terms of how much I like them.
They're both great, and I definitely know what TOX means by them being the most 'straightforward' DT albums (aside from 8VM's title track).
The song Octavarium puts that album ahead for me.

The Demo version has a final verse that ends the song on a much more hopeful, uplifting note.  You might want to check that out if you haven't already.

Octavarium has Root, These Walls, Sacrificed Sons, and the title track

Falling Into Infinity has New Milennium, Peruvian Skies, Hell's Kitchen/Lines in the Sand, and Trial of Tears

All amazing songs, but Octavarium as a full album is better than FII.  The comparison does kind of make sense though.  Both are considered to be disappointments by a majority of the fanbase, but both hold their best songs.

Octavarium.  I listened to this cd a month straight, at least 3 times a day.  That mus be a sign of how much I liked it.

I'm not really crazy about either one, but I think that FII is still a hell of a lot better overall than 8VM.

If you remove all of the fluff from FII, you have a great solid album.

If you remove all of the fluff from 8vm, you have 2 songs.
