Colin is amazing, whenever i hear songs like Waiting, Strip the Soul, Hatesong or .3, my love for him grows even more.
I can't see another bass-player play those songs with the same feel, and look so darn happy while doing it.   :D

it seems like no one wants to say it, but if one of the guys in the band had to go, I think Colin would be the least difficult to replace. *ducks* :p

Wrong. Colin is who makes Porcupine Tree so groovy. :hat

Agreed.  But I still stand by what I said.

Hmm... i wonder what i should get next that's either PT or SW-related (Since i'm collecting stuff).
Apart from PT-stuff, i have:

Steven Wilson - Insurgentes, NSRGNTS RMXS and the DVD (will get it in 3-4 days at least)
Blackfield - BF1, BF2 and the Live
No-Man - Schoolyard Ghosts, Together We're Stranger, Flowermouth, Wherever There is Light and Mixtaped.

I'm thinking about these:
Gavin Harrison & 05 Ric - Circles
Richard Barbieri - Stranger Inside or Things Buried
No-Man - Wild Opera (the new edition)

I'll probably get all i can eventually, just don't know where to start. :P
Also, before someone point it out... i would love to get Bass Communion and I.E.M-stuff, but since i'm ordering from a site that doesn't have anything by them, i can't in this case.
I don't have a card so i can pay over the web either, and my parents fall under the category "everything new is SATAN", so i gotta wait a few years before ordering over the web. :P

This might sound like a dumb question - but how do you say "05 Ric"... like "Oh Five Rick"? Or just "Five Rick"? Never understood the whole "non-letters in names" thing, but if you like it, it definitely makes you stand out.

I'm a fan of No-man myself, so definitely get Wild Opera. Also get Returning Jesus as well. I wish they would reissue the first album and EP together, though.

I've yet to get Barbieri's solo albums, so I might get those in the coming months, but does anyone suggest which of the two to get first?

Cool to see someone else digging No-Man:tup
I'll wait a bit for more answers, though i'm not really sure how many here have a good knowledge about these sideprojects.
Normally it's PT + BF and maybe Insurgentes, the other are less talked about.
I know Sonata listens to some of it at least, and then i'm pretty sure i've seen others mentioning the other side-stuff as well.  ;)

I've only heard No-Man out of the 'other' side projects, and of them only 'Returning Jesus.' I really enjoy it, but I do find that, even for essentially an ambient album, it drags on a bit.

HUGE No-Man fan here. I think that Schoolyard Ghosts is one of the best albums ever made with SW on it.

I'm a big Bass Communion and IEM fan, so I can help you out there. (I'm tired, but I think you're looking for suggestions or something)

Both are definitely worth checking out, And you can get all four IEM releases for something like $25 on Burningshed as a download (the box set is sold out). Very cool stuff.

If I missed the point of your post, my sleep schedule is all fucked up and I can't really understand things atm.

I really love Bass Communion, but I have not been able to start with IEM yet.

This seems a silly question, but does IEM have a good starter song?  I understand bands like this usually don't but it's worth asking to try to start loving some of their music.

err...not really  :lol

It's all instrumental experimental krautrock/ambient type stuff, there aren't really any sort of..singles or anything. Flute solos, bassy junk, sax solos, blahdy yadda blooblah

Aiy, I wasn't expecting there to be.

I'll try Arcadia Son later tonight as background music while I'm banging my head against a wall over AP chemistry.

I'm glad there is a new thread, this way I can keep up with it. I kinda got lost in the last one and I didn't want to play catch up.

Anyway, I love PT the way it is now, but Wilson's vocals lyrics are very hit or miss. Some of the lines in FOABP are just brutal to listen to.

Aside from the lyrical content I think that FoaBP is the most forgettable PT album IMO. I initially thought that "The Incident" was but after giving it many more listens (as well as FoaBP) and while "The Incident" grew on me FoaBP didn't.

I disagree with either of those albums being contenders for most forgettable.  I would much sooner add an album from the early years that isn't Signify.

I really don't understand the problems with FOABP's lyrics. It seems like just because it makes a pop culture reference it isn't good or artistic anymore.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Because it makes it sound goofy. I mean in a song that's actually trying to be serious there's a line that goes "But a song comes on to my iPod". I can't connect with that on any level because it's jarring.

I understand that Wilson was trying to go for the whole teen angst thing but just reading the lyrics sounds like he got all of his information from the news or some quick internet research. The lyrics to song "Fear Of A Blank Planet" sound like what you'd find in a middle school goth kid notebook on some cliche TV show.

I guess I don't see how it can be jarring. How is it any less serious because a brand name is dropped? Would it be better if he had said, "but a song comes onto my MP3 Player"?

Eliminate the line altogether. He's smart enough to find another way to express the same feelings.

Not all lyrics have to be super poetic.  The part is direct, and I have no problem with that.

It jars you...becuase you can't connect with the idea of a song...coming onto...an iPod?

Because that actually happens, you know.

I really don't understand the problems with FOABP's lyrics. It seems like just because it makes a pop culture reference it isn't good or artistic anymore.

My disdain for them has nothing to do with reference to brands. It has everything to do with Steven Wilson being on a high-horse and sounding like a grumpy old man.

That said, they've grown on me alot.
