I see how keeping it as strictly studio albums keeps it....neater....but I think any collection of music should be fair game.

I can understand the EP rule because the game is about ALBUMS, but OSTs should be included.  They are albums, after all, and they are new.  I just don't think the forum has had any OSTs up for consideration till this year.  Lots of people are digging Inception's this year, and I don't think that rule has come up in past years.  I didn't even think about it!

Wait OSTs seriously aren't allowed? I thought that was a joke!
Inception OST was amazing and should definitely be considered for this.

5. Karnivool- Sound Awake
This album is from 2009.

I do not believe I will be allowing OSTs and here is why:

Much like with EPs there is a question of intent and equal judgment. The reason EPs have not been allowed in the past is because they are not marketed with the same purpose as a full length album. A full length album is a COMPLETE work made to stand alone as an audio experience. An EP is a piece, a snippet, a sampling and is usually not meant to stand as a finished and complete work from an artist. In the same respect an OST is not meant to stand alone, its value is derived not only from the quality of the composition, but perhaps even moreso in how it compliments a visual element. Because of this comparing it alongside a normal album is like comparing apples and oranges.

We all have things we'd like to include in these lists, I personally think that there were two live releases this year that would be in my top 10 if they were allowed. However please understand the rules are in place to provide a level and balanced ground for a certain type of output to be compared. This is not the end of the world, just post the top 10 albums that fit within the framework and everything will be fine.

Letters is correct on that one, we go by what year an album was ORIGINALLY released.

FWIW, the Inception soundtrack is pretty typical of a movie soundtrack. I do not understand what's so special about it, other than it was on Steven Wilson's list so OMG what SW likes we all should like too.

Letters is correct on that one, we go by what year an album was ORIGINALLY released.

OK. You saw my revised list, right? Is it okay?

Also, if you update a list in this thread, please either edit the original post OR delete your original post once you have posted your new version, this will makes things easier on me once I go through and start compiling tomorrow.

I only had ten albums this year, and the Scott Pilgrim OST was one of them.  I vehemently disagree with your explanation of that rule.

Yeah it makes no sense. Would Kevin Moore's Shine be allowed? That's a soundtrack. But it's clearly a full length album, full of music created by Kevin Moore. It's 100% representative of the artist and it's marketed as such. Just because it was set to a movie doesn't mean the music isn't original and the product of the artists mind. And if that OST is allowed, all others should be too.

We all appreciate Nick for doing this fun little survivor. But to ensure it IS fun and accurate, OST's; which are normally full length albums, should be allowed as they feature in many peoples top choices for the year.

Perhaps a compromise can be drawn. An OST of original music made for the film, like Shine or Inception, is much different than an album full of songs from various artists that were just included in the movie.

But the OST rule doesn't make a whole lot of sense.

EP's not eligible? So, I suppose all of these (among so many others) aren't/wouldn't-have-been as well.

1995
Dream Theater - A Change of Seasons

2002
Call Florence Pow - The Strange Situation

2003
John Arch - A Twist of Fate

2004
Oceansize -  Music For Nurses

2006
The Dear Hunter - Act I: The Lake South, the River North
Pure Reason Revolution - Cautionary Tales for the Brave

2007
Porcupine Tree - Nil Recurring

2008
Agalloch - The White

2010
Sufjan Stevens - All Delighted People (even though it clocks-in at around 1 hour)

I remember in 2003, A Twist of Fate was my personal Album of the Year, lol.

yeah no EP's seems like an arbitrary rule. A 30 minute album is accepted but a 31 minute EP is rejected?. I don't think an EP could ever win this thing, but there might be one a lot of people like and for it to appear nowhere on these lists doesn't make much sense!

But it is Nick's survivor. He can (and will) do what he likes  ;)

FFS people. At the end of the day does it really matter? Is it really that big of a deal to knock something from your list and put on your next favorite? If I was looking to find the best ANYTHING released during the year then EVERYTHING would be allowed. But I'm not so follow the guidelines and post within them.

1. James Labrie - Static Impulse
2. Pain of Salvation - Road Salt One
3. Great Big Sea - Safe Upon the Shore
4. Star One - Victims of the Modern Age
5.Anathema - We're Here Because We're Here
6.  Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier
7. Coheed & Cambria - Year of the Black Ranbow
8. Disturbed - Asylum
9. The Pineapple Thief - Someone Here is Missing
10. Blind Guardian - At the Edge of Time

Weak year for new releases. These were basically the 10 albums I liked this year. If this was 2009, I would expect only the top 3 from here would have cracked the list.
On the other hand, amazing year for tours. Rush, DT, Iron Maiden, Great Big Sea, Porcupine Tree...good stuff.

Yes but a lot of us are arguing that OSTs are albums, and thus do fit under the parameters.

I'm only arguing because the Scott Pilgrim soundtrack was awesome and I only have ten releases from this year, and very few of them were actually any good.
