Ok DTF I need some suggestions
« on: January 03, 2011, 03:58:25 AM »
Someone give me suggestions of bands I may like. I am looking for something proggy, as in I am a HUGE Pink Floyd fan, and of course I love Dream Theater... and I am looking for heaviness... But I can't STAND death growls and crap like that. I am really itching to get into new music... I am just really picky. What bands are out there that can quench this thirst? And before it is said, Porcupine Tree isn't the answer. I like PT, but there is still something missing. The only band that has hit the spot lately has been Haken, but even that kinda leaves me wanting for more.

please and thank you
  :metal
I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

What about Oceansize?
They aren't just progressive, there's a blend of a lot of styles in their music, and they have both calmer (build-up epic-type of songs) and heavier songs.
No harsh vocals really, apart from some groovy and cool screaming in Sleeping Dogs and Dead Lions:D

There's so much good bands and good music BEHIND the growls today, so start by for example Opeth... And fulfill your taste in music. Some of todays' best music is in extreme genres of metal, so why not try a little harder?

The thing is I love most of the music, its just hard for me to get over the vocals. And I don't dislike most of the opeth  have heard.... If that makes sense...

If he doesn't like death growls he doesn't like death growls.

I don't like rain. But then some of today's most common weather is rain so it's my fault for not trying.

Try Frost*! A lot of progressive rock bands - while they dabble in a style that I'm pretty fond of - ruin it through not being particularly original. They spend their lives trying to be Genesis or Yes or Pink Floyd or even Dream Theater and unfortunately the majority live in their shadows - because songwriting greats aren't two-a-penny. Not only is Jem Godfrey a fantastic songwriter (Ivor Novello award winning) who writes popular music for his day job - granting him a rare textbook expertise in structure and melody - but the music that they make is of a totally new breed, which is all the rarer. Two stellar albums, and you can't go wrong with either of them.

Even though I still resent that asterisk a little bit.

Came to post this, and similarly related, also try Kino (the UK band with Pete Trewavas, John Mitchell, John Beck, and Chris Maitland, former drummer of PT). They only have one album (Picture), but it's a damn good one.

Coheed and Cambria
Muse
Mew
The Dear Hunter
Devin Townsend
Pure Reason Revolution
Frost*
Yes
Russian Circles
Demians
Marillion
Porcupine Tree

There.  Plenty of "proggy" bands that don't have an "X" in their name or concept albums about public domain works.

Every time I see a thread like this I come in with one name: Arcane. They've released two albums so far and it's some of the best progressive metal I've ever heard. Check out their most recent album, Chronicles of the Waking Dream.

They aren't that heavy, but they rock enough at times to where I think the OP would dig 'em.

I decided not to mention them because they aren't THAT proggy (what the OP was looking for), but I would suggest them to anyone in a heartbeat.

Prog rock...on the verge of being metal but not quite:

Spock's Beard -- The Light (album)
Transatlantic -- Bridge Across Forever (album)

As for prog metal, go with:

Symphony X -- The Odyssey (album)
Shadow Gallery...not too familiar with their catalogue at this point
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. Symphony X is criminally underrated and should be as big as DT.  Fates Warning is an awesome band as well.
