I know it would never happen, mind you. But just think. The man behind Mr. Bungle, Fantomas, Peeping Tom. The voice of Faith No More. His creative influence seems to bring his very distinct style. After he began vocal work with Faith No More, many ans considered it to sound very similar to Mr. Bungle, despite the fact that he actually did very little writing on the album. Most things he's involved in just seem to end up with that distinct Mike Patton touch without actually sounding the same.

Combine this with Dream Theater. Their collective creativity tends to creative a specific sound, again without it all sounding the same. I'm thinking a mix of two such creative forces would be pretty interesting.

Then again, their style are different enough there's the chance it might turn into something...not particularly good.

Regardless, I know it would never happen. But alas, a man can dream...

Roddy Bottum turning up on stage and having a key-off with JR would be more appealing.

It's a weird match-up but I would love to see that! :metal

Yea, I don't think it would work.  Mike Patton is very playful and tongue-in-cheek in his music and DT is too serious.  I would like to see Patton link up with Kevin Moore, if anything.  I think they could create something pretty interesting.

The last thing I want to see is DT becoming more goofy.

Considering that their goofy moments have been horrible every single time.

i only like mike as the singer for FNM, other than that he seems too goofy for DT

Fair enough. Though I'm a big fan of bizarre, out there music. Even more so of technical, progressive, etc. DT is my first musical love, after all. A combination would be good, though you guys are bringing a good point of MP being too goofy for DT.

Why? His production has gotten stale.

I like the way the band has been going... BC&SL had some good sounds on it. I hope there isn't too much of a drastic change on the new cd.

It sounded ok. But the production is more than mixing.

I heard a couple Mr. Bungle songs. They reminded me of when Haken go all Ringling Bros. on us.

Apparently so.  Sorry, man.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

JP and MP have done a fine job.  I don't see why anyone thinks or wants otherwise.
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. The production has become stale. Not horrible or anything, but boring and predictable. A lot of us just want a change.

All I really want for the next album is JMX to shine through as he previously used to.

Do you mean the mixing or the songwriting?  Mixing is excellent.  And the DT fanbase in itself acts as a fine enough critic for songwriting.

I mean the arranging, picking which takes, giving directions and mixing and so forth.

The mix isn't bad by any means, but it's flat. It's VERY VERY modern sounding and usually lacks dynamics. JR only stands out when he's doing his crap soloing, and all of his cool stuff gets burried. JM is virtually absent from the mix, and tones could be quite a bit better.

Regardless, it's not so much a statement on the general opinion of the current production as it is a question as to what will happen now. The production was done by Portnoy and Petrucci. Pornoy's gone now, is Petrucci going to do it all on his own? Someone else? Completely shared responsibility?

It's more people saying "Hey, this could be a neat solution" than saying "Ugh the production sucks they need to do this."

Petrucci will produce it alone. Case closed.

This, which is one of the many reasons I'm looking forward to the new album as much as I am.

Following your Train of Thought I think that David Bowie would be even better. Everything he touches becomes gold!!!

Lust for Life - Iggy Pop
The Downward Spiral - NIN
Lou Reed
Queen
When Ginobili gets hot, I get hot in my pants.
