The Periphery Thread
« on: December 30, 2010, 09:39:22 PM »
While discussing this band on the DTF chat, letters insisted I make a thread about them. Anyone else hear of these guys?
I think John Petrucci's nephew plays guitar for them. They're a decent Prog metal/experimental band, if you haven't heard of them then give them a listen.

I'll definitely be checking out their debut.

Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I saw them open for Devin Townsend but their singer was sick so they did an all instrumental performance for 45 minutes. There is talent there but far to much wankery for my tastes.

I wish they'd stayed instrumental. Vocals completely ruin it for me.

I wish they would have kept ANY of the singers they had before Spencer. I can't stand his voice.

At first listen the vocals didnt' do much for me. But they have grown on me enough that they are quite..... bearable.  :neverusethis:

They're not my favorite but I certainly don't think they're "prefer-the-instrumental-version" quality, as several other posters have said.

I like the vocals, and i don't really see a problem with them.
Without them i'd probably have problems listening to half of the album, since they add a lot to the songs.

The vocals are alright, just not my style. Would sound better without that whiny teen tone. But other than that they're cool. I'm loving this style of music.
I don't know how they can be so proud of winning with them odds. - Little Big Man

I've been following them since 2007, when Misha posted "Intertia" on the Petrucci forum. I saw them live right before they got Chris, but I haven't seen them with Spencer yet. I got to hang out with them after that show and they're all really cool, chill guys! It's interesting how on the CD, you can definitely tell which songs were recorded when because his screaming developed by the time they recorded Zyglrox, which was one of the songs recorded last. It definitely tops the 2010 list for me though! I can't wait for the EP or the next album!!!! And dethklok09, you're not alone!

Also, what's wrong with wankery? Everyone themselves loves to wank, but nobody likes anybody else wanking! Wankery isn't the point of this music, anyways.

This is definitely my favourite CD of 2010.  At first I wasn't too fond of the vocals, but they really grew on me.  I really enjoy this album.

I was enjoying it until the screaming started but i guess it's in the same sort of ballpark as the JLB album so I will give it a chance. The music is good. I don't mind the voice when he's singing buut the screaming... I just don't like it. And I don't want to grow to like it either.

So what's everyone's favorite song on the album?
Personally i have to say Racecar, the riffs and the melodic sections in that song are outstanding.  :tup

His voice is in a similar vein to Rody Walker from PTH, only not quite as good.
