I see Steel Panther as a two-trick pony. They are killer musicians, and I love them for that by default just because I'm a sucker for 80's glam metal. Then there's the raunchy stuff. It doesn't get old for me because a lot of their stuff is actually really clever. I'm sure Dice fans know what I'm talking about. That dude's been doing basically the same exact shtick for decades, and for whatever reason, people love it and want it time and time again. Steel Panther does that for me. The songs are funny enough, but their back and forth banter live and raw talent is what seals the deal me. It's almost like you're getting an 80's concert and a stand up comedy show with four comedians for the price of one ticket.

I agree that the joke would get old faster if they couldn't actually play.

  • Pointing out the "unfunny" since 2014!
That's the main takeaway with Steel Panther I think is that they're a lot better musically than they have any right to be with the juvenile lyrics that might have been written by a 10 year old.    A song like "Gloryhole" is a lot catchier and better musically than a lot of the bands they are 'making fun of' imo.

That's it for me.  I love "Weenie Ride" (phrasing!) not because the lyrics are hilarious, but because it's the whole ethos.  They NAIL the idea of a power ballad, and mock it to all hell all at the same time, AND the lyrics are funny.   I'm not suggesting that Steel Panther is Shakespeare or Sir Laurence Olivier high art, but there's more to it than just locker room humor.

Yea that's another thing, their banter live work so great. I wonder how much of their act that is well prepared or if it's just a natural thing for them. I guess at this stage in their career it's more of a natural thing. Either way that's not something that's easy to pull off in a natural way.

It would also work better if the guys in the band were completely inoffensive, down to earth and ordinary in their personal life.

I have no idea what the 'actors' are like IRL.

I really enjoy SP. More is more wrt to fun in rock/metal. So tired of that po-faced attitude that is the norm.

I loved Bad News. Warriors Of Genghis Khan was genius - and that first album was produced by Brian May! Yeah, that Brian May!

Not sure if it came up here before, but here's a link to the only release from Skrapp Mettle, a parody band featuring Jeff Scott Soto on vocals, with a slightly classier delivery on dirty lyrics than Steel Panther. This one came out in 1991 and I only got the chance to listen to one song at this point, but what I heard was awesome. Give it a spin.

Props to Joe for encouraging me to get on listening to this. Steel Panther slides in mid December and drops the song of the fucking year, complete with all the feels.

"Poison looking so damned good
I wondered if I was gay"

Lyric of the year.  Without question.
That's a word salad - and take it from me, I know word salad
I fear for the day when something happens on the right that is SO nuts that even Stadler says "That's crazy".

I interviewed Michael Starr today. Here's a few questions I got great answers for:

"What's the meaning behind "It's Never Too Late to Get Some Pussy Tonight?"

"My next question is deep. It might be dark, or it might be rosy. Can you explain to me the lyrics of the song 'Magical Vagina""?

"On the song 'Instagram' you address what is probably the biggest epidemic in the last three years, which is the excessive use of filters on social media. How do you cope with that?"

"Was the song 'My Dick is all that and More' based on personal experience?"

What is the best way to rejuvenate after you sleep with "17 Girls in a Row"?

"Gene Simmons said he has slept with about 3,000 women. How do you feel about Gene getting so close to your number?"

HAHAHAHAHA. I can't wait for the answers.  :)

(I think Gene's number is higher, closer to 5,000)

Good review. I like the album. The lyrics aren’t that funny but the music is mostly very enjoyable. My favorite song is Teleporter which I think is genuinely great musically, simply catchy as hell.

Evidently Steel Panther performed on Americas Got Talent and has moved on in the competition.

Not sure how many of their songs can be performed in front of a more family friendly environment, but good on them for getting some exposure.

Funny how just the word “exposure” can get me giggling like Beavis and Butthead once we get to talking about Steel Panther.  :rollin

I had the pleasure of seeing Steel Panther on Sunday as part of my bachelor weekend with 5 of my closest friends. This was my 7th or 8th time seeing SP, and it was without a doubt the best show they've put on yet. They played at Foxwoods Resort Casino with a proper sound system, and novelty of the act aside, it was the best rock concert I've seen in years. They were so freaking tight, and Michael Starr was absolutely slaying it on the vocals. The sound in that venue is one of the best in the state, and I really enjoyed what Spyder brought to the table as well (this was my first show since Lexxi left).

At one point a guy was getting dragged/chased out by security. Satchel called him an asshole for leaving and the guy managed to get back up to the stage. Michael actually handed the guy the mic for a few seconds before security got to him. He made it back into the show later on in the night, and he got bounced pretty good then too (got that on video). Prior to Girl From Oklahoma, they usually serenade a girl from the audience for a few minutes. They called out a pregnant girl that was about three weeks from popping and they treated the situation exactly as you'd expect them to  :lol

This is the second time in a row I've seen them and haven't heard Fat Girl (Thar She Blows). I wonder if they're taking it out of rotation for a while. Seems like an odd move because I always considered that their "must play" song, like Livin' on a Prayer, Piano Man, Free Falling, Born to Run, etc..

I'd highly recommend seeing them on this tour if you're so inclined. The setlist was excellent and they're really on their game right now. Spoiler of setlist below:

Eyes of a Panther

Let Me Cum In

Asian Hooker

Man in the Box
(Alice in Chains cover)

The Burden of Being Wonderful

Friends With Benefits

Death to All but Metal

1987

Ain't Dead Yet

Impromptu Song for a Girl
(For Ashley & Sophia)

Girl From Oklahoma

Community Property

Party All Day (Fuck All Night)

Encore:
Gloryhole
