It's weird.  His early voice was almost soothing.  It was smooth and fit the music well.  Each successive album it became more jarring and abrasive to me.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

I love his voice on all the records, but I can see how that would be a barrier of sorts, especially on TSOP.

I listened to Individual Thought Patterns today for the first time in a long time. Sooo damn good  :hefdaddy I need to play it more often.

Possibly my favourite.  Andy LaRoque and Chuck made a monster guitar team.

Anyone pick up the Sound of Perseverance 3cd remaster yet?  Interested to hear what it sounds like.
Didn't know about this, gonna have to be on the lookout for it.

Just posting here to confirm that Leprosy is still the best death metal album ever.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

It's definitely the best classic death metal album ever. It's way ahead of its time in terms of the production (WHICH I LOVE)

I still like Symbolic and The Sound of Perseverance better though.

Agree, I think The Sound of Perseverance is the best Death album, and by extension the best death metal album. (But don't take my opinion seriously, Death is the only death metal I listened to)

His voice is pretty hit and miss with me, haha.  There are some good tracks off the album, and when I listened to it, little siblings were screaming through the house, so I'll give it another spin, as I always love my metal, but Death shall always be a favorite of mine as I have a massive hard on for them lol

Yeah, I understand not liking Mustaine's voice, though it isn't really central to what the album accomplishes though.

I only have Human and tSoP, but, my god, Human is pure perfection from beginning to end. What an amazing album.

tSoP feels a little too long to me, like some of the songs overstay their welcome a bit.

I'll probably pick up ITP when the remaster comes out. I'm a sucker for deluxe editions.

The Sound of Perseverance has been one of my biggest inspirations in life.
And the fact that Death didn't have one bad album is radular, every album was fucking fantastic and a perfect transition from album to album.
Control Denied was pretty cool too, I hear the second album is being completed and should be released within the year or next year!

Fuck!
Yeah, no shit.  I posted that video somewhere here a year or so ago, but I don't see it.  Maybe there's another long, lost Death thread.

Amazingly, I can neither confirm nor deny that I saw that tour in Ft Worth a day or two later.  I think I was there, but I have no recollection of it whatsoever.  Shows at that particular venue were always hard drinking affairs.

Well I guess it's time for us to post our dream Death lineups.

Just list it in this format...

Guitar:

Bass:

Drums:

...since it's a given that Chuck's in the mix no matter what.

Guitar: Paul Masvidal

Bass: Steve DiGiorgio

Drums: Gene Hoglan

Also, that's really awesome that you got to see them Barto. I wish you weren't such a degenerate that you pissed away the chance to recall the show since you were too busy sodomizing your liver but you probably had a better time that way anyway :)

:floydapproves:

I was pretty close to leaning toward Christy as well. I just couldn't get over how Gene wowed me on first listen more than any other drummer I've ever heard. Christy may be better in all reality but had the misfortune of having my first listen of him being on TSoP well after I'd had Gene smileing all over my eardrums for several months.

Ya wanna hear some shit? Gene was actually drumming for Opeth while Lopez was dealing with his "anxiety" issues on the Ghost Reveries tour when I saw them back in '06 but since I wasn't keeping up with Opeth's affairs on any more than an occasional look at  their website, I didn't even know it was him. What a blown opportunity to meet an idol :(

Eheh, the reason I picked Christy is because TSoP was my first Death album, and it just completely blew me away, the whole package.

Same thing with me except I started with Symbolic instead. I bought TSoP next like 3 months later and then got Human and ITP either on the same day or like a week apart two months later. I didn't get Scream Bloody Gore until like another later and then never bought any other Death until getting Spiritual Healing on DigiPak earlier this year just to stay honest with 'em since I'd had it dowloaded since the days of Kazaa.

You assume it would be otherwise memorable.  You're incorrect.  This was before most people even knew who they were.  They were playing a shit-hole club in Ft Worth to 200 people.  Cassettes cost money and you couldn't just DL somebody's whole catalog.  You might have borrowed a copy of SBG or Leprosy, but probably didn't know much about them.

People think that because a band went on to be bad ass that their early gigs would have been monumental.  That's very rarely the case.  The truth is, if you saw Metallica on the Kill Em All tour when you were 16, you probably wouldn't remember much about that, either.  They weren't famous yet so there was no reason to really burn it into your head.  Probably they're just the band that happens to be on while you're there drinking quarter beer.

I have to say my favorite Death album would either be Symbolic or The Sound of Perseverance. Until just recently, I definitely ranked TSoP as my favorite Death album/one of my favorite albums ever, but Symbolic has aged really, really well for me. So many great songs on that album. :metal
