Frames

Thanks!  I'm heading out now and it will be the first spin.

Effloresce or Everyone Into Position.
Frames requires more focus then those, and I feel like it's a better album if you're really paying attention to it more.
Effloresce and Everyone Into Position are both more accessible, and you'll most likely enjoy them even if you are doing something which decreases your focus towards the music.

Just my 5 cents. =)

Effloresce is my favorite, so that would be my recommendation.

I agree that Effloresce is the better album but I think Frames would be better in a yardwork situation.

I don't think you can go wrong with any album to be honest.
Sure I heard Frames first many years ago and didn't like it, but when I got into the band for real I started with Self Preserved, and it worked like a charm.
And Self Preserved is still the album many fans consider to be the 'last' starting-point.
I think both of their EP's would work really good as well.

I do get to concentrate the best when I'm working in the yard (Unless of course the music in playing on my stereo with no distraction) so there is focus on the music.

Edit: I've also got noise canceling headphones I use when working in the yard.  So I'll go with Quads advice and try Effloresce when I'm outside again tomorrow.  Thanks everyone!!

Nah we haven't.
My guess is that they wanted to go in different directions, seeing as Self Preserved is probably their most diverse album in that sense.
Some really heavy songs, some very mellow.
If that's the case though, it's a pretty lame reason.
They have always been a band of many genres, and one of their best qualities was that their music had a lot of variety, they could've easily continued making albums satisfying both the need for heavy but also more mellow music.

It would've been a direction I could get behind. If that was the problem, had they stayed together we might've seen a great album to follow Self-Preserved.

So I loved Frames.  Atmospheric, well crafted, melodic.  A great contrast to the hot sunny day it is.  It took my mind off of the heat.

On first listen my favorite song was Sleeping Dogs and Dead Lions.

Most people around here seem to diss it, but ignore that, because it's a truly fantastic song, that adds a lot of atmosphere to the album.  :tup

Sometimes it's the one different song that catches you off guard. I stopped working and grabbed my water and took a break while listening to it.

Yea the first time I heard that song I was caught off guard as well. Such a neat thing to do on an album like that! AFAIK it's the only song of theirs that is even remotely like that.

Personally I just feel like Steven Wilson got a lot of inspiration for The Incident from that, the same "type" of heaviness is featured on that album, and he has praised Oceansize in interviews and such.
But yeah, just a guess.  ;)

I'm not sure about that.  In Absentia in 2002 is when PT went to a heavier sound while still retaining the atmosphere.  I often wondered id Opeth influenced him.

Well, the Opeth-influence is quite clear.
However, I was talking about the dynamic-shift if you look at Circle of Manias and I Drive the Hearse, and compare it to Sleeping Dogs and Dead Lions and The Frame.
The whole djent-type of riff and a heavier song, followed by a very soft song.
Never the less, I love it.  :hat

Effloresce is a lot more raw and experimental. Less polished, less confident, but it's their masterpiece. Few bands create debut albums are peculiar and interesting as Effloresce.

Even though Frames is my favorite, Effloresce might be the best debut-album I've come across.
That really says a lot about it's quality.

Right on for it being a bit raw.  Loved it and it is a great first album.  It had a bit more of a bit and helped me as I lugged the bark much all over the yard.  I've give the other 2 cd's a spin tomorrow.

The thing that still amazes me about Oceansize is how high quality everything is.
Even their B-sides spread across singles and such, they could've easily ended up on an album.
