I got Everyone Into Position last month, its got some incredible stand-out tracks like Music For a Nurse and Ornament / The Last Wrongs, but it still seems that I can't absorb the other, more subtle songs as easily though

Oceansize is probably the most amazing band i have discovered this year... too bad that it was after they split up :( I have only Everyone Into Position, but i'm still enjoying every bit of it.
I especially love Music For A Nurse and The Charm Offensive.
I should probably get another album of theirs really quickly.

add Townsend and Pain of Salvation to that and I'm inclined to agree with you. Lately I think I may like Frames more than Effloresce

I'm prepared to add Devin Townsend seeing as Deconstruction is the best album ever made, but not Pain of Salvation.

The great thing with Oceansize is that all of their studio albums and EP's are equally fantastic.

I probably finally know Self Preserved enough to fairly judge it.

Song-by-song.

right now.

GO

Part Cardiac
still the worst song in Oceansize's discography wheeee

Superimposer - Wonderfully put together song, reminds me a lot of Catalyst though not quite as good. very different regardless, and the ending is amazing.

Build Us A Rocket Then... - Man, this song is amazing. So much energy, such great riffs, and it's surprisingly catchy. Oceansize CAN write good heavy songs, and this proves it.

Oscar Acceptance Speech - Definitely well-placed on the album, very calming with lots of wonderful melodies. The instrumental ending is too short IMO

Ransoms - Such a different song for the band; way darker than anything they've ever done, but it works. I kinda wish they'd dragged it out a bit longer.

A Penny's Weight - yeah this is still pretty forgettable. I'm not even sure if I got the title right. It's just so... ordinary.

Silent/Transparent - Best on the album, wonderful lyrics and melodies in the first half and the second half is just plain epic.

It's My Tail etc. - I love the frantic sound of this song and its heaviness. It doesn't seem like the type of thing you'd expect to find on an Oceansize album but it works really well.

Pine - this should be on effloresce. Bu seriously, very nice and pleasant song. The strings really add to the atmosphere

Superimposter - Oceansize made a song with a swing feel? And it's dark sounding? I'm in, sign me up! Yeah, this one works really well... except I don't feel it's a good closer to the album. Ah well.

Yea, Self-Preserved is really awesome. It's their weakest album, but it's got a lot of awesome stuff on it. Good review, and I agree that Silent/Transparent is the best song on the album! :tup

I wouldn't say that Part Cardiac is their worst song, even though it's not a personal favorite or anything, it's still pretty great.
I think Self Preserved deserves more credit then it gets, for me it's easily on par with the other 3 albums, sure it's a lot of new elements, but that's what the band was going for, and I think they pulled it off great.
Silent/Transparent is still my favorite from the album.

I think I would have liked the album more if not for the track order.  It really doesn't make much sense, and sometimes the album drags because of poor placement.  It's not a bad album, but definitely not on par with any of the other 3.

Yea, I actually agree with this. The entire album is clumped into a few sections. The first three songs are heavy, and then there is a string of like 4 quiet atmospheric songs, then a few more heavy ones. Had they reordered the album, it would have been a lot better IMO.

I put together this order real quick, but I think it works pretty well.
The album order really isn't THAT bad but I think this makes the album better.

Build Us A Rocket Then...
A Penny's Weight
Superimposer
Ransoms
Silent/Transparent
It's My Tail etc.
Oscar Acceptance Speech
Pine
Superimposter

Part Cardiac doesn't fit on on Oceansize album so I took it out completely <_<

Yeah... only moved two songs.

Here is a short list of Oceansize songs that are above godliness. These songs transcend time and space and kick your ass so hard that you don't even know what's going on when you're listening to them.

- Massive Bereavement
- Woman Who Love Men Who Love Drugs
- Saturday Morning Breakfast Show

- Heaven Alive
- Music for a Nurse
- Ornament/The Last Wrongs

- Trail of Fire
- Savant
- The Frame

- Oscar Acceptance Speech
- Silent/Transparent
This man speaks true. And here I was thinking I was the only lover of SMBS
